To be FUMING?!!

I'm currently 23 weeks pregnant and suffering with bad spd which is mainly felt in my lower back. Our sofa was on its way out so on the 27th December we went and ordered a new large sofa and snuggle chair from a local place (not a big chain) and were told it'd be 4-6 weeks but pretty much guaranteed it'd be first week of feb. There was discount on and we'd calculated for both it'd be £970. We paid 50% and the lady said the total bill was £720 so we paid £360. I was obviously confused as it sounded too cheap but on our invoice it had '£250 discount' so I assumed it was an extra, albeit poorly advertised discount.

We went back in the shop 2 weeks later and got a mattress which was £400 and when we were paying I mentioned we'd ordered a sofa with them too and the woman looked us up and said there was an error on our last invoice and our total for the sofa was actually £970. I was obviously annoyed and really wanted to argue the point but with pregnancy hormones and this bloody pain I didn't push it and just said it was a bad mistake to make and had we not gone in for the mattress we'd have probably only been told about the mistake when the sofa was actually in.

Anyway fast forward to this morning and they ring me to say they're currently chasing the supplier and waiting on a call back. I was mad again cos I thought she'd be saying it was ready (I'm not normally so easily angered it's my hormones honest!) she then said 'there's delivery slots tomorrow my to which I said yes but we don't know the sofa is ready yet so no point getting excited it might be tomorrow.

She's just rang me again and said it'll be ready 24th if feb and delivery can be a few days after!! I'm LIVID!! I cannot sit on our sofa for more than 15 minutes at a time and if I lie on the bed to watch tv I really really struggle to walk when I get up. I've just very firmly told the lady I'm really really unhappy and I would like a call in the morning from the manager. I've told her I am NOT paying full price for this sofa, given the ridiculous mistake with the cost AND the fact it's another 3 weeks!! I'm so annoyed, where do I stand though when the manager calls?? We owe them £610 which we need to pay when the sofa is ready for delivery but I don't see why we should pay the full amount?? I don't want to cut my nose on and say stick it because we won't get it for this price anywhere else and I don't know if we'd be able to get the deposit back anyway if we did do that?? Please help!! What would u do?

If you have an invoice for the lower price that’s the price you pay. However you don’t actually compete the transaction until you pay on full or if there is a credit agreement in place.

Delays happen unfortunately. No point in getting g too upset about it. Certainly not the route to go down to adjust the bill back to the 700 pound mark.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 05/02/2020 19:13

Guys... can anyone honestly say they would pipe up about the "discount" given at the store? I'm pretty sure 99% of you would keep your mouths shut.

That said... sorry OP you're being a bit unreasonable about the delivery time. Hormones are bastards though, sending you all the chocolate in the world!

BohoBunney · 05/02/2020 19:13

We had a sofa from dunelm. It ended up being about 10 weeks late (after the initial 12 week manufacturing wait). We had gotten rid of our sofa the day before it was supposed to be delivered. I wasn’t pregnant but I was furious too. When it eventually came it was marked (luckily on the back which butts up against the wall so you can’t see it) and the shaved apes that delivered it managed to damage our stairs / doorframe too (paint chipped off everywhere). We were offered a refund on the deliver £50 and a £100 discount as a “gesture of good will”. They didn’t give a flying fuck but I refuse to even set foot in the robbing bastards store now. So I don’t think you’re being unreasonable about the wait.

BigPinkFlower · 05/02/2020 19:15

What would u do?

Chill its a sofa.
Within a year it will be covered in sick, poo, wee and blood
Within 3 years it will be painted and felt tipped, chocolate coated and squashed banana

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 05/02/2020 19:17

Don't you have to make the delivery date a condition at time of purchase? You have to state that "time is of the essence" and the shop has to agree to this condition. Otherwise they can deliver it within a "reasonable time" and the definition of reasonable is open to.interpretation - can you tell that we sought legal advice about a very similar situation?

Would do and have done.

I would and have done but that's because I'd be too stressed about getting stung for it later, as in this case.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 05/02/2020 19:27

You're obviously all better than most in that case (myself included!)

Goodebe · 05/02/2020 19:29

What does your paperwork say about the price Op? I think you could argue that when you paid the deposit you entered in to a contract for x amount, providing you have proof... however... if the trader simply says they can’t honour the contract and refund the deposit to you it’s a court case suing them for ‘loss of bargain’ and that’s going to be a massive, lengthy and costly pain in the bum... you’re seeking a good will gesture from them at best so don’t be too rude when you speak to the manager or you’ll get nothing and be waiting even longer for a more expensive sofa from elsewhere.

ineedaholidaynow · 05/02/2020 19:33

Furniture shops have sales/discounts all the time, so it can get confusing what the actual price might be.

We bought a chair the other day and was presented with an additional money off voucher as we walked in the shop even though there was a sale on already

ScarlettBlaize · 05/02/2020 19:34

@Interestedwoman
I would give them black reviews everywhere you can.

Of course you would. Luckily most people reading reviews can see when they're from someone like you and discount them.

Bringringbring · 05/02/2020 19:37

Can you post a photo of the invoice (without revealing any details obviously)?

AmelieTaylor · 05/02/2020 19:37

Speak for your own!

& that has ore surly nothing to do with the OP’s situation anyway!

She can’t ‘chill’ because her sofa isn’t there to chill on!

@rainbow1982

Call the manager tomorrow. Tell him that when you bought the sofa you were given an invoice for £720 and were asked to
Pay £360, 50% which you did, but when you went in to buy your mattress you were told your invoice was incorrect & shoukd have been £970. Ask him why his staff has increased your invoice (it’s irrelevant what you thought it should be, they involved you!).

Then ask him why it’s going to be three weeks late and why you were advised there were delivery times available tomorrow.

Tell him you’re finding the entire experience very unpleasant and whilst in pain and expecting delivery of the sofa when they told you, upsetting you hear that it’s now not coming for another three weeks which, when you have SPD is half a
Bloody Lifetime.

If others are happy to pay an additional
£250 & wait until whenever they fancy delivering it, it doesn’t mean you have to be!

Absolutely yes. I did it yesterday. Went to collect a ring I'd had made, they gave me the price and it was about £250 less than I expected. I told them they'd left off the engraving costs and paid what I actually owed them. Because that's what honest, decent people do.

ASureSign · 05/02/2020 19:43

🙋🏻‍♀️ I would say something. I think a lot of people would.

OP, I don’t th8nk you should be fuming but you could ask for a small amount as a goodwill gesture.

BennytheBall · 05/02/2020 19:43

Mildly annoying but not worth fuming over.

strawberry2017 · 05/02/2020 19:47

As someone who also has SPD- get a gym ball it's what my physio recommended.
You won't regret it they are really helpful

PeppermintPasty · 05/02/2020 19:48

I think the best outcome is for you to go all Mrs Bucket on the manager and see if you can get something off for the inconvenience (as you see it). From a legal point of view (though I don’t think you’re asking that tbf to you) I don’t think there is anything you can do.

Nicknacky · 05/02/2020 19:48

Can you upload a photo of the invoice with the names blanked out? It might be easier to see where the error is then.

Soontobe60 · 05/02/2020 20:04

I could understand your annoyance for not getting away with paying a surprise reduced price, and also having to wait a couple more weeks for delivery, but what I find very annoying is the fact that you're now threatening them with bad reviews. In other words, you're holding them to ransom. That IS being a CF!

BlueMoon1103 · 05/02/2020 20:09

I actually don’t think YABU. Their mistake wit the price and they are delivering late.

rainbow1982 · 05/02/2020 20:15

Soontobe60, have a reread of the posts my dear before you namecall unnecessarily, I haven't threatened to leave any bad reviews?

Yeah that's ridiculous that they expect you to pay £250 more after doing that.

wheretonow123 · 05/02/2020 20:28

Looking at the way the invoice is structured I think that you are not being unreasonable to be upset. originally reading it I thought that you had already got a discount and hat the £250 was at the till but this is reasonably clear.

if it was me I think I would go back to the store manager and explain the issues including the fact that the delivery time was very important to you and that you would not have purchased the mattress if you had not received that extra £250. Say also that in this particular case the delivery time was very important to you due to medical issues and that you expect an additional discount to reflect these issues.

As I say, I was initially thinking you were being unreasonable but, looking at it all, I think you are not being unreasonable to ask for them to reflect & consider an additional discount.

Best of luck with this and the rest of the pregnancy.
