To be worried about Trump getting a 2nd term

Anyone else?

I actually think that he will and quite frankly it scares me.

He actually said that America was respected again, under his presidency. It frightens me that they are a number of individuals in America that will believe this dross.

I thought after 4 years, people would of had enough..now its closer I'm starting to think otherwise 🙄

Thoughts?

The British governmemt under Boris voted to prevent refugee children being reunited with their parents just days ago. I suppose its not quite as bad as actively locking them up. But Christ, what a race to the bottom.

Lweji · 05/02/2020 17:20

The US also put Japanese citizens in concentration camps.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internment_of_Japanese_Americans

Concentration camps are not exclusive to nazis. They exist, and, as mentioned, are used by the Chinese government.

Look at the conditions children are in the current US concentration camps. It's all over the news. Then tell me they are just being held and that it's all benign.

Marold · 05/02/2020 17:25

Bernie is definitely the favorite to win the Dem nomination at this point.

I think he has a fairly good chance against Trump and definitely think he'd win the popular vote, however (a) trump still seems to have a reasonable shot at winning via the electoral college, and (b) the Democrat's base seems quite fractured and I worry about them failing to rally around their potential nominee, whoever that may be.

UYScuti · 05/02/2020 17:57

he runs the country like a businessman??
he runs the country like a toddler more like, he's an infant in an old mans body
he cant control his impulses, he gets triggered and calls people names, brags all the time like a spoiled whiny child

megletthesecond · 05/02/2020 17:58

He will.
People are idiots.

UYScuti · 05/02/2020 18:02

it suits wannabe authoritarians for people to be 'idiots' so they play to our worse instincts and human weaknesses, he wants to debase humanity so that he can lord it over them

samyeagar · 05/02/2020 18:07

Except Bernie has never faced a true adversarial campaign, much less the kind that would be run against him. Trump likes his little pet names for his opponents...Comerade Bernie...over and over and over again.

We are already seeing republicans running against and amalgamated democratic candidate where all of the things different democratic candidates have said are being lumped onto whom ever the eventual candidate will be. Fully open borders, government gun confiscation, open wealth confiscation, outlawing private health insurance, these are just some of the generally unpopular positions that have been directly proposed by various democratic candidates, that the eventual nominee will have to take ownership of.

Remember, what ever else Trump is, he is still a reality television and tabloid star and is very good at branding, marketing, and message control.

UYScuti · 05/02/2020 18:25

very good at branding, marketing, and message control
yes, but that's all there is, a polished and charismatic branded....turd

samyeagar · 05/02/2020 18:40

yes, but that's all there is, a polished and charismatic branded....turd

For sure, but so what? Pointing that out over and over is not enough to beat it. There has to be an actual desirable alternative capable of garnering broad support. Thus far, the democrats have been unable to deliver.

Gemm83 · 05/02/2020 18:48

There hasn't been much talk here, well not since Trump first got in, but is there much chat in the US about Michelle going for the nomination in the next few years? I love that woman!

OP posts:
samyeagar · 05/02/2020 18:59

Chatter like that is something that goes on for sure in certain circles, just like Oprah running, Ellen running, running, but as far as any broad seriousness to her ever running? No, not really.

Leaannb · 06/02/2020 01:22

@Lweji Japanese Americans were placed in Internment Camps where their sons were then drafted fo fight in the War. There is a huge difference between Concentration Camps and Internment Camps. I think calling the Internment Camps Concentration Camps demeans the horrors of what the Jewish and special populations in Europe went through.

Gliese163 · 06/02/2020 01:26

He really could shoot someone in the middle of fifth avenue and get away with it.

Leaannb · 06/02/2020 01:28

@Margold Bernie doesn’t have a chance of winning against Trump. He came in second in the Iowa Caucus and he is too far left to ever be elected. Not in this lifetime. Trump just got acquitted so it’s basically guaranteed Trump for another 4 years

Leaannb · 06/02/2020 01:30

@Gemmm83 Not once have so ever heard of Michelle Obama even thinking about running for President. If she is she better hurry up because the voters are going to be the ones who she screwed over with school lunches. They absolutely hate that woman and so does my grocery bill

stopgap · 06/02/2020 01:33

There are significant parallels right now between the US and the UK. Each has veered dramatically to the right, and a significant voter base has chosen to believe whatever is convenient to their own situation.

Much as Labour is finding itself in disarray, so too are the Democrats. The Iowa caucuses were a disaster, and Trump breezed through the impeachment process.

It is ghastly, it is stomach-churning, but I do believe we are headed towards a second term for Trump. General consensus is that Biden has the best chance, but I think that Bernie has broader appeal. Weirdly there’s a crossover regarding Trump voters, many of whom also like Bernie’s renegade, anti-establishment style.

Marold · 06/02/2020 01:35

@Leaannb

The Japanese 'internment' camps were literally, by definition, concentration camps.

The Nazi camps were also concentration camps to an extent but went beyond that, and could better be called exterminationordeath camps.

BritWifeinUSA · 06/02/2020 01:35

I certainly believe he will be re-elected. I live in the USA do it affects me more than most on this thread but I feel that he’s the lesser of the evils. We have certainly done better under the Trump administration than we would have done under Hillary Clinton. Or any current Dem for that matter.

Marold · 06/02/2020 01:39

@Leaannb

Bernie won the popular vote (or rather, is winning, as the full results aren't out yet). Buttigieg wont last the race. It's one from Bernie, Biden or Bloomberg and betting markets strongly favor the former. Warren still an outside shot tbf.

Personally I think Bernie would have a better shot against Trump than the others but all we can do is wait and see. I think it'll be a knife edge election either way.

stopgap · 06/02/2020 01:40

@BritWifeinUSA, I am pretty surprised that you think he’s the lesser of two evils. He’s an avowed racist, misogynist and has zero conscience about the environment.

I’m also a “Brit wife in the USA” and feel sick to my stomach at the thought of him being re-elected.

Marold · 06/02/2020 01:43

Honestly I reckon Trump was the worst possible leader and has irreversibly damaged the foundations of American democracy. As much as I disliked the other Republican nominees last time out, none of them would have been as bad as Trump in the long term.

stopgap · 06/02/2020 01:44

@Marold, agreed. It comes to something when you look back all misty-eyed at the days of Dubya.

AGirlCalledJohnny · 06/02/2020 01:54

I’m an expat, now US citizen, in a deep red state and I’m sadly convinced he’ll get re-elected. He doesn’t have anyone who can compare with his cult of personality, he can do no wrong in his base’s eyes. I’ve accepted it’s going to happen but what is really unnerving is the sudden uptick in ‘Ivanka 2024’ rallying. Although I think Pence will have a serious problem with that.

Marold · 06/02/2020 01:54

FiveThirtyEight's Dem Primary Forecast has moved Bernie into first place post-Iowa

projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2020-primary-forecast/?ex_cid=rrpromo

And Fivethirtyeight are pretty excellent (and were about the only aggregator which gave Trump a real shot of winning the last election).

Long way to go, of course.
