To think that Billie Eilish should SPEAK UP!

Is it just me? I've heard rave reviews about her and I've tried many times but I just can't hear the words! Every time one of her songs comes on the radio I have to turn it up really loud and even then I can't understand a word!

I can't cope with the breathy whispery style, though I'm interested to hear if she's going to do a big Bond power ballad.

ASilhouetteAndNothingMore · 03/02/2020 21:25

She sounds like she's half asleep. Like most of the bands my teen listens to.
BUT nothing that's been released in the past 20 years has been any good.
And I'm now officially OLD. Shock

Margotshypotheticaldog · 03/02/2020 21:27

Don't worry if you can't hear Adele's lyrics, you're not missing much.
Billie Eilish reminds me a bit of a Norwegian singer... (maybe Norwegian?) Stina Nord something.... Her voice sort of tickles your brain through the air. It is not exactly unpleasant.... But I can't listen for too long. It makes me sort of itchy.

Margotshypotheticaldog · 03/02/2020 21:27

*through the ear

darktriad · 03/02/2020 23:02

Early 50s here, love her. Teen daughter was also a fan (until I became one!)

Grandmi · 03/02/2020 23:06

I am very old...mid 50 and I think she is bloody amazing...so talented !

BlythesEyes · 04/02/2020 16:14

Tried buying concert tickets today...I'm on the reserve list Sad

BlueHarry · 04/02/2020 16:17

I've never heard any of her songs. I know her name and I saw a picture of her in the metro once.

I literally haven't heard a "current" song since 2014. That's not because I listen to cool music either. I listen to talk radio or my "now that's what I call the 90s" Cd.

Itstheprinciple · 04/02/2020 16:20

Not necessarily speak up, but I always find myself thinking "open your mouth wider!"

But I do know that's because I'm getting old.

Toomanycats99 · 04/02/2020 16:24

My daughter is very upset with me as I wouldn't spend £200 to get a pair of tickets and take her!

Emmelina · 04/02/2020 19:57

She’s singing so softly the words have hardly formed. DD12 likes her and asked her singing teacher to work on one of her songs and ST refused, saying all the work they’ve done on projection, breath exercises, singing from the diaphragm etc would have been wasted (I agree, honestly!). Not quite sure why she has such a big following. Is it more clear when its projected directly to the eardrums through AirPods or something?

Stripyhoglets1 · 04/02/2020 20:04

I think her voice must be at the pitch that middle age hearing loss just can't hear! Ironically the middle age hearing loss in my case is from loud clubs, concerts and headphones when I was Billie eilishs age!

Emmelina · 04/02/2020 20:09

@stripyhoglets haha. I definitely wasn’t listening to whispering music at 16! Perhaps my eardrums are just broken now Wink

chickenandchip · 04/02/2020 20:13

I don't mind. Makes a nice change from the bellowing you hear on X Factor type shows.

Orangeblossom78 · 04/02/2020 20:18

Her voice sort of tickles your brain through the air- yes a bit like the ASMR videos, so people find it gives them tingles I get this.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 04/02/2020 20:19

DD12 likes her and asked her singing teacher to work on one of her songs and ST refused, saying all the work they’ve done on projection, breath exercises, singing from the diaphragm etc would have been wasted (I agree, honestly!).

That's a shame. One of my biggest regrets is that I gave up my singing and piano lessons in my early teens. I often think that if I'd had a Teacher who had let me sing/play music that exited and inspired me now and again I probably would have carried on.

NoNoAndDefinateNo · 04/02/2020 20:22

I haven't listened to her before but just put her on spotify. I get what you mean.

I like this cover much more than her original

megletthesecond · 04/02/2020 20:22

I'm middle aged and I can hear what she's saying when she's on the radio.

Orangeblossom78 · 04/02/2020 20:22

Try listening through headphones it makes a difference

Helpmewhatshouldido · 04/02/2020 20:23

I dislike her so much, I can't even put my finger on why. I just feel like she uses dark themes..suicide/gender confusion/rough sex to sell to young kids? Sorry if I'm wrong and I've offended any of her fans but she just disturbs me.

Helpmewhatshouldido · 04/02/2020 20:23

..i can definitely hear what she's saying..

dementedma · 04/02/2020 20:26

I’d never even heard of this person until now. I though the thread was about Billy Elliot!

cardibach · 04/02/2020 20:31

Just been for a listen based on this thread. Talented? What are you all on? Obvious lyrics, really poor voice production (it’s not even singing really, is it?) poor breath control...
I know approximately 25364892 kids who sing better.

RunForBurritos · 04/02/2020 21:12

I had never heard of her until a few days ago. I quite like her. Don't understand her songs but English is not my first language so I don't always understand songs anyway.
I couldn't figure out a lot of what Amy Winehouse was singing for example.

ConstanceSalinger · 04/02/2020 21:16

She does mutter in songs. I heard a new version of one this morning with Justin Bieber now half singing it. He makes my foot itch but at least I could understand the words.
