To ask how many clothing washes do you do a day?

Starting to think my family are manky 🙈
Have just put on my first wash in 6 days. As a family of 5, its built up (I've not been well enough)
But I've only got another load and some towels and sheets to do. So another 2 washes.

Speaking to a friend who does 3 a day Blush I'm wondering how she has the time?!

I should add that our washing machine is 9kg so fits more than usual and towels get reused if it's just been the kids that use them or they were only used for drying hair.

Am I really that unusual?

I do about 5 loads a week of clothes, one of towels and one of bedding (two doubles two singles) so realistically a load every day.

We used to do more washing until the kids were in uniform and also got a bit older so they weren't spilling food down themselves at every meal. And also used to do a load of cloth nappies every other day when we had 2 in cloth. So it feels relatively light now!

feelingverylazytoday · 03/02/2020 16:12

I probably wash every two or three days, for me and my daughter. We wear everything apart from socks and knickers twice in the winter. Towels every few days, bedding once a fortnight in the winter, weekly during the summer.
When my kids were little I did use to be obsessed with washing, like doing all their clothes seperately, washing all their blankets and soft toys when they didn't really need washing, going round the house looking for things to wash. I'm a lot more sensible now.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/02/2020 16:13

It varies daily but over the course of a week

1 or 2 dark washes
1 or 2 colours
(Usually three between these two, varies seasonally)
1 white
1 delicates
1 hand wash
1 socks/underwear
1 towels and cloths
1 or 2 bedding

I'm quite picky about sorting washing though, and not all of these loads will be full.

LEELULUMPKIN · 03/02/2020 16:14

2 adults 1 DS 14. Wash once a week. I have a large washing machine and plenty of well worn clean clothes to wear in between.

I do possess an iron (somewhere - shed I think it currently lives) but I think the ironing board eloped with the other one of MN legend.

abstractprojection · 03/02/2020 16:15

I tend to do four loads per week, one per person, one towels and one sheets.

What annoys me is that the washer has a one hour cycle, but loads seem to take 1.5-2 hours in the dryer

PleaseStopRingingMe · 03/02/2020 16:15

Probably 2 loads a week at a guess. 2 adults 1 toddler. But we do have a 10kg washing machine. When we had a 6kg washing machine I was definitely doing about 4-5 loads a week.

Megan2018 · 03/02/2020 16:16

Some people must have really small beds and towels! We have 2 Superking beds with high thread count sheets plus cot/pram bedding-you can only get one bed’s worth is a 9kg machine.
We also have lovely big, thick bath sheets. One load of towels fills the machine.

LBOCS2 · 03/02/2020 16:16

2 adults, one teen, one school age, one extremely mucky preschooler whose favourite food is spag bol 🙄

We do 5 loads in an 11kg machine, all at the weekend. 2x dark loads, 1 whites and lights, one towels, one bed linen. I'll preemptively soak really disgusting polo shirts if I remember but generally I just chuck it all in. We do overuse our tumble dryer though, which allows us to turn it all around pretty quickly rather than have to find drying space. And each child has 5x sets of uniform.

UnitedRoad · 03/02/2020 16:18

Three adults, one load a day. Occasionally an extra one if daughter has been stashing dirty towels.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 03/02/2020 16:18

Family of 6, my washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher are only off when being loaded/unloaded - 7 days a week. Hmm

Oopsinamechangedagain2020 · 03/02/2020 16:18

I'd say I do 20 loads a week in a 9kg washing machine. 5 loads would be small ish though as it's just muddy football kit, work items, rugby kit, a few items that can only be washed on 30 with a low spin.

Family of 5 including 3 kids who all do football or rugby, DH who can get grubby at work and me who goes to the gym 3 times a week.

MaryShelley1818 · 03/02/2020 16:19

I seriously can't believe how much people wash!! It's bordering on ridiculous. Why does underwear have to be washed separately to other clothes?

I honestly can think of far better things to do with my time.
We're 2 adults and a toddler...wash a couple of loads at a weekend (well DH does) and it's my most hated job putting it away. DS goes through a lot of clothes but he's 2 so his clothes are relatively small. Washing is lights/dark plus bedding.

ByeFeliciaa · 03/02/2020 16:21

And yes to the pp who have said the washing doesn't take that long but come on 3 a day! The emptying of the washing machine, the drying of it, the ironing! Three times a day! I genuinely do not understand how you'd have time for that!

VanGoghsDog · 03/02/2020 16:22

I must have a really small washing machine - no way would I be able to fit all the bedding from my bed (which is only one sheet, two pillow cases, one duvet cover. I don't wash the mattress protector very often) and the towels (one bath towel, two hand towels) all in one wash. That takes three loads on its own.

VanGoghsDog · 03/02/2020 16:23

I haven't ironed anything for about twelve years. Nothing seems to need ironing.

Northernsoullover · 03/02/2020 16:24

I do 3 a week. Family of 3. I despair sometimes at the amount of clothes and linen I possess but then I think if I didn't have as much I'd be washing more often. I have a 9kg machine.

Fidgety31 · 03/02/2020 16:24

Every single day
My son has OCD and uses a clean towel every day - sometimes two towels a day.
I am forever washing towels

mountainofdreams · 03/02/2020 16:26

Two adults and one child and we do about seven or eight loads a week.

Yesterdayforgotten · 03/02/2020 16:31

@ByeFeliciaa

'And yes to the pp who have said the washing doesn't take that long but come on 3 a day! The emptying of the washing machine, the drying of it, the ironing! Three times a day! I genuinely do not understand how you'd have time for that!'

Quite honestly as a family of 4 i do 2-3 washes 5 days a week as have young toddler dc and they get grubby very quickly! Before dc witth just 2 adults I could happily get by on 2 washes a week.
Oh and I have time because I put a wash on early in the morning and also evening if I'm out or hang out in the morning in the summer. I also don't iron in advance, laundry gets folded and put straight away as soon as it's dry. We iron as and when/if needed.

Yesterdayforgotten · 03/02/2020 16:36

Forgot to mention it's a 9kg machine and I wash when the basket is full and cant stand piles of unclean laundry laying around. Bedding gets washed once a week and towels every couple of days or so depending on their state.

ByeFeliciaa · 03/02/2020 16:38

Should have said it's just 3 of them so not like a big family.
She is very shocked I do so little Grin
I also have young children and yeah they get dirty but I don't whip the clothes off at the sight of dirt. That to me is quite unhealthy (referring to my friend) she will not take DC out if they've got a bit of milk or dribble on their t shirt Confused

ok family of 5, me,dh,dd22 dd18 ds16 plus 2 dogs ( one is a very smelly elderly lab)
I do x3 loads per day and more on a weekend, have done for years.
it's super easy - first load pre work, one straight after and usually another after dinner eaten.
all beds changed weekly, uniforms for me and ds washed daily, pet bedding (lots) washed x2 per week, bits of boyfriends clothing also added in curtesy of dd's! .
throws, cushion covers washed x2 per month, towels every few days.
eldest dd has her bedding/ towels/ clothes washed separatelydue to moderate/severe excema

Nacreous · 03/02/2020 16:41

I reckon approx 1 load per person per week, 1 load per double bed per two weeks, and 1 load of towels per person per 2 weeks. Might only be half a load per person for children's clothes.

So for your family I would assume 2.5 loads of clothes per week, 2.5 loads of bedding per 2 weeks, and 2.5 loads of towels per week, so about 6 loads a week in total, in my washing machine which isn't that big.

Assuming a large capacity machine you might get that down to 4 loads, but I wouldn't expect it to be fewer than that really?

Doesn't a hot wash ruin all your clothes?

Yesterdayforgotten · 03/02/2020 16:41

@ByeFeliciaa I have found since we became a family of 4 the washing has increased alot with baby spit up etc. I dont change toddlers clothes midway through day either. I only change them once a day when dirty.

FloraGreysteel · 03/02/2020 16:47

I do one coloured and one whites wash a week, and I live on my own. I don't wash things after one or two wears either!

One wash a week for a family of five sounds grim, unless you're naturists who sleep in nests rather than sheets, and drip dry rather than use towels!
