Dh and I are moving to a new house. It has 4 double bedrooms (the master has a small walk through wardrobe to the en-suite) and a single. There’s also an office downstairs. There are just two of us, no children.
We can’t agree on how to use the bedrooms and it’s causing issues.
Ideally I’d like a double room as a dressing room/ wardrobe and we both need an office plus I’d like to have 2 spare rooms and dh would like a gym.
Any ideas on how to structure it?

people like you are driving up property prices and contributing to a culture of under-occupying space which means poorer families live in crowded homes. No way does a childless couple need more than a three bed at most and if you've got too much money you could try donating it to help others.

Oh do fuck off!!

The OP and her DH are absolutely allowed to spend their money how they please.

I hardly think they’re making it more difficult for a couple with children to buy a property that’s suitable for them.

Get a fucking grip.

Btw I’m child free and have a 4 bedroom detached Wink how dare I indeed!

JosefKeller · 02/02/2020 20:25

OP, do you have a big utility room downstairs?

I would keep the single room as a "crap room" otherwise to be honest. With a bed so can double as a guest room to add to the existing one.
Every house needs a "crap room" to keep the rest tidy - I don't mean a dumping room full of shit, I mean the room where:
you pack your luggage before holidays
you wrap presents
etc etc.

It leaves your own bedroom and office free. If you have a real spare room, that's what I use mine for. It's bliss.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 02/02/2020 20:26

If you can’t fathom it out you shouldn’t be buying a house.

Turning a room into a library/office/gym/wardrobe is hardly rocket science.

Bodear · 02/02/2020 20:27

Thanks again @Disfordarkchocolate another great suggestion. The mattress bit looks nice and thick.

Thanks to everyone who’s given suggestions and posted about their houses; it’s been really helpful to get different perspectives and a fresh view.

I am loving the bitter and jealous comments though, I swear some posters will wake up with an ulcer tomorrow morning Grin

BooseysMom · 02/02/2020 20:27

We are in a 2 bed shared ownership house. We have one DC and with DH out of work we have no chance of another DC or of moving to a bigger house. We are full to bursting and constantly trip over things just to move around! I simply can't imagine this life you describe Confused

WalkingDeadTrainee · 02/02/2020 20:28

As long as it's not sponsoring a 🐐
😂

altiara · 02/02/2020 20:29

You could build a cabin in the garden for the gym so no one can hear the sweating and running machine.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 02/02/2020 20:31

You really don't need help to decide this Confused

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/02/2020 20:33

I've slept in it several times, as has my husband and it's cosy. We do put a throw down so you don't feel the buttons on ours. Some adults would not be comfortable though.

Do you both need a full-time office or do you both work from home a couple of days a week? I'd share an office as my husband is a quiet worker and it's nice to have someone to share the tea-making duties. For me, this would be to make sure I had either the downstairs office or the smallest bedroom as a reading and music room all to myself. I could easily use all your rooms.

Isadora2007 · 02/02/2020 20:34

Loving the bitter and jealous comments. 😂

We have a gym in our house and two spare bedrooms but no walk in wardrobe or dressing room. Our office space is just a desk and cabinet in one of the spares- but that has a gorgeous comfortable sofa bed from sofology in it so it’s a spare room cum office I guess.
Bigger house seems to attract more clutter though so I’d like an extra room still... I’d have a Christmas room if I had my way- with a tree up all year round, a wrapping table and present storage... 😂 I can dream.... maybe once the kids leave home...

Bodear · 02/02/2020 20:35

@BooseysMom but you have a dc so maybe I can’t imagine the life you describe.
We all have different blessings and different hardships.

@JosefKeller I hardly dare type this but yes we’ll have a utility/ laundry room. Good point about the extra space though. I do really want to keep our bedroom as tidy and serene as possible.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/02/2020 20:35

If the people on the Peleton ad were working as hard as they are supposed to be @altiara you would hear the sweating. They would all have damaged their nice wooden flooring with pools of sweat.

HollowTalk · 02/02/2020 20:36

Some ridiculous posts on here. The OP doesn't have children - assuming she and her husband work full time that frees up a hell of a lot of space in the home and money, too. Why shouldn't she spend it on a nice house? What do you suggest she should do with her money?

BettyAll1 · 02/02/2020 20:37

Most people with money and a big house would put this question to a professional (an architect or interior designer). I think asking random people online about how you should arrange your big house is going to get you more abuse than help.

Bodear · 02/02/2020 20:39

@Disfordarkchocolate we don’t work from home full time; dh will use his probably 50% of the time and mine will be 1 day per week plus extra curricular study. I can easily share my office with a spare room.
I wish I was musical enough to need a music room Grin

OP posts:
PegasusReturns · 02/02/2020 20:39

Having previously had a gym in my house two things i) unless you have concrete floors upstairs it must go on the ground floor ii) if you actually work out in it you can’t combine it with anything else - they do get a bit sweaty Wink

So the bedrooms get assigned as: your bedroom, two offices and a dressing room.

How often do you and DH work from home? What sort of work? (Ie do you need lots of quiet time?)

I really like having a permanent double guest room so I’d be inclined to share an office and have an arm chair and side table in the guest bedroom/dressing room for quiet calls/headspace.

WalkingDeadTrainee · 02/02/2020 20:40

I hardly dare type this but yes we’ll have a utility/ laundry room.

Run😂
No. Honestly, OP ignore the ridiculous comments. Someone has 4 kids, someone has 4 extra bedrooms🤷 Kudos to you getting there!

Bodear · 02/02/2020 20:42

@BettyAll1 I’ve found most people on the thread really helpful and “chatting” it through has been great. It’s made me realise where my thinking was a bit stuck and opened up some new ideas.
Mumsnet is fab for “hive brain”.

No point asking Mumsnet, OP, they hate people who have money. You’re not allowed to have any problems either, however trivial. It’s pathetic

chesterpester · 02/02/2020 20:46

Why are people presuming the op lives in a mansion & is rich?

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/02/2020 20:46

I'd be overjoyed with an upstairs laundry room. Room for airers, a dryer and the ironing board. In my fantasy house with 9 bedrooms I'm not doing the washing or ironing though but being nice to my staff.

My music room isn't for playing @Bodear, just listening. And napping.

JosefKeller · 02/02/2020 20:47

No point asking Mumsnet, OP, they hate people who have money.

more accurately, they hate people who have more money than them Grin

HollowTalk · 02/02/2020 20:47

A big house isn't necessarily expensive; it depends where you live. I have a 4 bedroomed house and wouldn't get a studio flat in London for the same price.
