Moving NHS staff out of their homes, to make room for people needing quarantine.

AIBU or is this extremely unfair on the staff, to be moved to hotels. I lived in Hospital accommodation when I was newly qualified, and it was definitely my home. Surely they'd have been better to requisition a hotel for the quarantined people.

This absolutely illustrates how badly NHS staff are treated. They are almost expected to be grateful for being turfed out and put in a hotel. This lack of support for basic needs of staff (in this case housing) is one of the reasons staff do not stay in the NHS.

Even if this has to happen, at the very least where is the public thanks or support for these staff? They are just expected to give up their homes without complaint - this is all tied into the idea that working for the NHS is a vocation so there is no need to treat staff well.

This is an exceptional case (for now) but actually the lack of NHS accommodation and specifically accommodation for being on-call is a huge issue.

People may disagree with NHS staff on this but at the end of the day people vote with their feet and they leave because of reasons like this and the lack of public support.

Yes WiseUp it is happening.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 31/01/2020 20:12

I’m assuming there is a plan here, that despite those that think they’ve got the inside track, isn’t shared with everyone else. Could be: we have this site pegged as an emergency site in case of Anthrax, but until then we can let the residents go on using it

This is my thought. A trial run for something else.

Although I wonder whether we should buy a canoe...

What, the quarantined people being allowed to stay in flats that still contain NHS staff’s possessions?

TSSDNCOP · 31/01/2020 20:14

A backpack at the very least Wise

Read you’re own post WiseUp. You said most err empty

HeIenaDove · 31/01/2020 20:18

However I do agree that those in family accommodation should be treated differently

yeah lets fuck over the childless/childfree ones again

TSSDNCOP · 31/01/2020 20:18

Is there a reliable source reporting this please? Can you link?

TSSDNCOP · 31/01/2020 20:19

That last isn’t to you Wise

Yes absolutely. A PP was claiming that the quarantined people will be living in flats containing NHS staff possessions and I was questioning this, rather than whether vacant APH residences will be used.

HeIenaDove · 31/01/2020 20:22

Given the political climate and attitudes in this country towards people who rent/are living somewhere they dont own. Is this really such a surprise?

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 31/01/2020 20:23

That last isn’t to you Wise

Thank goodness for that. I’m on the gin, but this thread is getting very confusing!

TSSDNCOP · 31/01/2020 20:24

They are not being asked to leave a semi in Basildon. They are being asked to vacate for 2 weeks an NHS facility.

TSSDNCOP · 31/01/2020 20:25

It’s the drama Wise they love it.

To paraphrase the marvellous Pam.

Dm5678 · 31/01/2020 20:26

Depends on the hotel.... I wouldn't mind being moved to a nice hotel for a couple of weeks

LoveNote · 31/01/2020 20:29

Helena....fgs here you are again trying to twist a thread to fit your agenda!

savethecat · 31/01/2020 20:30

I think it's the attitude of "they are NHS employees in rented accommodation, bugger 'em" that is sad.

I appreciate and am grateful to these staff and thank them for going through this disruption over the next few weeks.

It is absolutely that attitude that is the problem savethecat. As if they don’t matter at all Sad.

MrsCatBasket · 31/01/2020 20:34

And how do we know that the bus drivers will actually stay at home? and even if they do, what if they have actually contracted the virus during the drive (FFS why weren't they properly clothed and protected?) and pass it on to their families who won't stay home and quarantine for 10 days, and those family members are gaily passing it on where ever they go? and what the actual fucks use is 10 days when the incubation period is 14 days? the whole wthing is a shambles!I hope that all makes sense...Im so angry I cant type properly!

I’m assuming they’ll do what happened with swine flu self-quarantine. They phoned me 6/7/8 times a day at different times (including the middle of the night) to check I was still home, no one else was allowed in the house, and there was the threat of arrest if I left. The only ones I know who were allowed someone else in their house were a siblings who both had it who stayed in the one house together for the quarantine

I assume they couldn’t safely drive with hazmat gear on - it’s the same with the paramedics the other day at the uni one. The 10 day thing is inexplicable though.

TSSDNCOP · 31/01/2020 20:40

lyra did they say what would be the consequence if you did not answer?
