Moving NHS staff out of their homes, to make room for people needing quarantine.

AIBU or is this extremely unfair on the staff, to be moved to hotels. I lived in Hospital accommodation when I was newly qualified, and it was definitely my home. Surely they'd have been better to requisition a hotel for the quarantined people.

Oh give over TottalyFucked, NHS staff aren’t cannon fodder.

I’ll not give over, ta very much. It’s a discussion site and I’m entitled to my opinion. We have to be realistic. I know it’s shitty for the staff, but the trust owns the accommodation and unfortunately the need to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, is more important. Do you think the health service haven’t thought this through?

savethecat · 31/01/2020 19:40

Of course, they haven't considered the staff., They tendered for the job., Its all ££

Barbarella1 · 31/01/2020 19:48

Yes I understand Totally NHS staff aren’t important. You’ve made that clear. No wonder the NHS are bleeding staff.

Yes trusts own accommodation just like other LL do. Would you think the same if families were thrown out of social housing?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 31/01/2020 19:50

What part of, I worked in the health service for 25yrs, with extremely challenging patients, did you not understand. Stop putting words in my mouth.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 31/01/2020 19:51

Also, did you not read the bit where I said families should be treated differently or were you deliberately being obtuse?

saraclara · 31/01/2020 19:52

I love how posters here know better than the experts who've trained and planned every day for this exact sort of situation. Dcotors, scientists, public health officials - all employed specifically to be ready and prepared for this sort of thing.

Nah, it's keyboard warriors here and on news comments board who know that people are being sent to this accommodation for all manner of nefarious reasons, rather than the sensible, logistical ones that are actually behind the plan.

rslsys · 31/01/2020 19:55

Will they have rooms for the bus drivers who ferried the people there without wearing hazmat suits or masks?

saraclara · 31/01/2020 19:56

Why not find an unused/empty facility somewhere else?

Given the housing shortage, just how many empty facilities do you think there are around the country to house up to 100 people and all those who need to look after them? Still fewer that aren't derelict, and which have working heating, plumbing and clean, furnished rooms ready for people to move into?

Come on people, it doesn't take that much brain power to think around these 'easy answers' that you have for everything. Life isn't simple.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 31/01/2020 19:57

Arrowe Park and the Royal are 10 miles and 20 - 25 mins apart in normal traffic, not 40. Much less for an ambulance with blue lights.

TSSDNCOP · 31/01/2020 19:57

Much less for an ambulance with blue lights. and actual Coronavirus victims onboard.

BrokenWing · 31/01/2020 19:58

I feel for the staff being turfed out of their homes, leaving their personal belongings to be used by strangers. I wouldn't relish the fact an unknown stranger with unknown hygiene habits has been sleeping in my bed, using my towels, having a peek through my possessions (which they will as they will be bored stiff for 14 days!)

Baring any other sensible solutions I guess there is no choice. I hope they are well compensated for the disruption/intrusion.

savethecat · 31/01/2020 19:58

@WiseUpJanetWeiss it takes me ages but I am a crappy driver

GFJoe · 31/01/2020 19:58

Sounds sensible to me under the circumstances.

I’m assuming there is a plan here, that despite those that think they’ve got the inside track, isn’t shared with everyone else. Could be: we have this site pegged as an emergency site in case of Anthrax, but until then we can let the residents go on using it.

I really highly doubt, and also genuinely hope it’s not, as insinuated or more here, that someone unilaterally thought let’s stiff it to Wirral and NHS staff.

Barbarella1 · 31/01/2020 20:02

Yes saraclara the only way this could have been handled is to send them 180 miles. Hilarious.

Oh and TotallyFucked, ex NHS nurse here with DH who is an HCP. He speaks to people who still work in the NHS, as he does, and few are amused.

Skyechasemarshalontheway · 31/01/2020 20:04

The bus drivers have been given 10 days paid leave to stay indoors at home.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 31/01/2020 20:04

it takes me ages but I am a crappy driver It can take ages, regardless of the crapness of the driver, but it’s really not that far. I work very close to the Royal and live further away than APH.

Barbarella1 · 31/01/2020 20:05

The what? Wirral can be cut off? Hahaha.

Sunflower20 · 31/01/2020 20:05

Absolutely awful decision, just goes to show that nobody gives a shit about NHS staff.

Yes some people live there temporarily, but a significant number live there longterm. It's literally asking someone to move house twice in 2 weeks. No doubt some will be on nights too. WTF.

savethecat · 31/01/2020 20:06

@Barbarella1 poor wirral lol

Do we know this is what will be happening? Seems very unlikely from an IPC point of view. News reports suggest most of the residence is unoccupied, and it’s these flats that will actually be used.

Lockheart · 31/01/2020 20:09

Whilst it's obviously upsetting and extremely disruptive for the staff that have to move out, this is an extraordinary situation and needs must.

These kinds of plans will have been in place for years, made for a variety of contingencies. The location will have been chosen for its practicality and ability to be contained. Those in charge of this won't have woken up yesterday morning and thought "Hey, I know a really great way to screw over some NHS staff".

Barbarella1 · 31/01/2020 20:09

Perhaps the Wirral should build a wall and stop people coming in as apparently they’re being sacrificed. They’ll have plenty of pissed off nursing staff to help.
