I've got cystitis

Nitrofurotin makes me sick as a parrot but trimethoprim no longer available:(

What can I do? Loads of water? I was told last time not to drink in excess

What are your go to remedies?

No gp appointment

When I had this millions of years ago I was told to drink Lemon Barley water, can't recall if it worked though!

rainbowruthie · 31/01/2020 14:35

Cut out all caffeine and take dmannose (available from amazon or health food shops)
Feel better soon it is a miserable condition

TheoriginalLEM · 31/01/2020 14:35

Ewwwww that's what my mum used to say - I think I'd rather suffer!Grin

Seriously though I'd say it was too acidic

D-mannose powder is a miracle, I had recurrent cystitis and it's cured me completely. I take one dose when I feel the first signs now and it sorts it within a couple of hours.

cheeseaddict420 · 31/01/2020 14:41

Honestly? You need antibiotics. If its full blown cystitis you're not going to get better with some old wives tale remedies.

I have found that pure cranberry juice (from a health food store, not Ocean Spray or some other cranberry juice drink that is full of sugar) helps eases the pain somewhat, but really you need antibiotics.

Hidingtonothing · 31/01/2020 14:41

This is where I get mine www.waterfall-d-mannose.com/d-mannose-tablets.html

belay · 31/01/2020 14:42

You can buy trimethropin online in 200mg

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 31/01/2020 14:43

My daughter had a run of these last year and saw a pediatrician urologist. He said to take D Mannose instead of antibiotics as it's not infection specific. You can get it at bigger boots stores

Drum2018 · 31/01/2020 14:44

I take cranberry tablets (not the drink as that has too much sugar) at the first sign and it usually helps. However if symptoms last over the weekend I'd be seeing a gp in case you need antibiotics.

TheoriginalLEM · 31/01/2020 14:44

I think I'm going to try the dmannose- i couldn't get a GP appointment but might pitch up at the OOH walk in in the morning. Just need something to tide me over

Bicarbonate of soda in water - pints and pints of it. Its vile but drink k as much as you can (I also try and hold of weeing asnuch as I can so I have one massive flood of a wee!)
Always works for me

VodselForDinner · 31/01/2020 14:48

Cystopurin over the counter from your pharmacist.
Then lots and lots of water- the Cystopurin takes the stinging sensation when you pee away.

For cystitis prevention, peeing before and straight after sex also works for me.

Rafflesway · 31/01/2020 14:50

I second the bicarb trick as suggested by Coldemort

I used to suffer terribly with recurring cystitis years ago and my old g.p. told me about this which used to work a treat unless it was a full blown uti in which case antibiotics are needed.

Hidingtonothing · 31/01/2020 14:54

I was sceptical, not big on supplements/homeopathic stuff generally but I was desperate! Amazed how well it works, think I took one dose a day for a couple of weeks to really get on top of it but literally only use it once a blue moon now, just one dose when I get that first tingle and it seems to stop it in its tracks. Hope it works as well for you, cystitis is miserable Flowers

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 31/01/2020 14:56

DMannose is bloody brilliant, get mine from Sweet Cures, next day delivery and starts working in a few hours. Saved my sanity and my sex life

Bicarb tastes vile, but helps too. Good luck.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 31/01/2020 14:56

Are you sure trimethoprim isn’t a available? I had it about six weeks ago.

D-mannose works quite well but only if ecoli is causing the infection.

YicketyYackMamasBack · 31/01/2020 14:57

Antibiotics.. because mine turned into a very serious kidney infection. I was sure I could just flush it out with the whole cranberry juice and lots of water. Nope.

bluebellation · 31/01/2020 14:58

I also found bicarbonate helped BUT gave me diarrhoea. Take your pick!

Lostkeyagain · 31/01/2020 14:59

Downing 2 litres of Ocean Spray normally works for me at first sign of symptoms.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 31/01/2020 15:03

@Hidingtonothing me too! Amazed how well it works.

mawbroon · 31/01/2020 15:29

I used to suffer terribly with the cystitis/antibiotics/thrush cycle. Then I read that cystitis is not always an infection, it can sometimes just be irritation and peeing when there's not much in your bladder means further irritation because the urine is concentrated.
I rarely get cystitis now, but a pint of water every hour and holding it in until you can get a good flow really works for me. As does rinsing the area in cold water after sex to minimise irritation.

NotALurker2 · 31/01/2020 15:31

Cranberry juice. Also flush the toilet before you use it (as well as after....).

BowiesJumper · 31/01/2020 15:35

I had trimethoprim last week for a uti. What do you mean unavailable? It worked fairly swiftly!
