I have just discovered, by accident, that if you open another tab in your web browser, you can click on the tab and drag it away so that you have a second separate browser open at the same time. I don't mean split screen but like you have opened a separate thing. Did you all know this already?

I know this is a pathetic thing to get excited about but I was literally like this Shock and then giddy with excitement.

AIBU to be be pleased with my discovery?

You can also use a potato peeler for celery to peel the stringy bits off the back. I learnt that from a Kate plus 8 episode 🙈

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 01/02/2020 08:19

Useful computer one that always seems new to people i show -

If you find you’ve accidentally written something in all caps in word, highlight the passage and then hit shift + F3. This will scroll through three options - all caps, all lowercase, and first letter of each word capitalised - each time you click it.

Nanny0gg · 01/02/2020 08:36

There should be a dedicated computer tips topic. Some of these are life-changing!

TerrifiedandWorried · 01/02/2020 08:43

Control and tab scrolls you through what you have open on your computer.

SoupDragon · 01/02/2020 08:52

Why are people surprised that a vegetable peeler peels vegetables?

SoupDragon · 01/02/2020 08:54

Is there a list of the correct Wikipedia pages anywhere?

Don't worry - just pick anything beginning with the letter you want. When the word is in the title of the page it will have the required capital letter in accordance with proper grammar. Also, if you pick a person with the right initials, you can get more than one capital letter! 👍🏻

coconuttelegraph · 01/02/2020 09:00

If you haven't got much time and you want to contribute to a tip thread don't worry about reading the posts, throw in the old urban myth chestnut about petrol filler cap sides 😊

And I don't understand the OP, isn't that just how tabs work?

wowfudge · 01/02/2020 09:01

Alt+0128 gives the euro symbol. I use that at work a lot.

maartjebaabes · 01/02/2020 09:08

Mine was that in Word, you can write your own AutoCorrect in for words you often use or misstype eg ‘nec’ for necessary.

You can also use it to annoy colleagues, e.g. if you have a Philip you can also correct his name to Phillip , Open the popcorn and enjoy

I know some cars don't have a triangle at all but do some have one that is on the wrong side?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 01/02/2020 09:27

If you want to drink a can of soda with a straw, swivel the ring pull round 180° and put the straw through the little hole.
Except some soft drinks manufacturers have stopped making ring pulls with little holes. Bastards.

coconuttelegraph · 01/02/2020 09:29

soupdragon someone did post the whole correct thing above with an explanation of the triangle to explain fully, there are so many posts now it's probably quicker to google😊

Fedupwithmyhouse · 01/02/2020 09:40

This is almost as basic as CTRL c and v for copy and paste but I only recently discovered CTRL + and - for adding or removing rows in an excel sheet. It’s changed my working day immeasurably Blush

SayNoToCarrots · 01/02/2020 09:53

If you leave your kettle lid open the water keeps boiling forever because there is no steam buildup to let the sensor know it's boiled.

Also, on Android phones, double click the power button to open the camera, even when the phone screen is off / locked.

SayNoToCarrots · 01/02/2020 09:54

Also once I tried to tip toast out of a toaster before it was done and nearly set the house on fire, so I would avoid the cheese on toast tip.

flounderfish · 01/02/2020 10:10

If you install Google Translate you can hover it over a piece of written text and it will immediately translate into the language of your choice. This has been great in supermarkets in France and Holland when I've been looking for something specific. Obviously you could just look up each individual word but it saves time (which is great with a toddler who does not like shopping!) We have also used it for instructions etc. Really blew our minds!

BlimeyCalmDown · 01/02/2020 10:21

Toastie bags ordered for same day delivery Grin
but having to try out hash browns now as this is just too exciting!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 01/02/2020 10:59

I’ve even cooked veggie burgers and veggie sausages in the toastier bags, when I ran out of gas. 😁

Billyeyelash · 01/02/2020 11:17

I found out this week that when taking photos on my mobile, if I tap in the centre of the screen it automatically focuses.

It really is worth having teenagers around.... They love pointing out stuff I never knew.

Leolion09 · 01/02/2020 11:19

@honeybeetheoneandonly you don't have to wait for it to go down just turn off the WiFi button ;) I beat my high score yesterday!

StCharlotte · 01/02/2020 11:33

Also, on Android phones, double click the power button to open the camera, even when the phone screen is off / locked.

And you can use the volume buttons to take the picture, not just the "button" on the screen. Much easier for landscape.

MRex · 01/02/2020 11:37

@wowfudge - instead use your Alt-gr key and press 4 for a €. That's 3 clicks saved each time.

SoupDragon · 01/02/2020 11:42

if I tap in the centre of the screen it automatically focuses.

It focuses on the bit you tap on so, if you want it to focus on something on the right, you tap on that. It also adjusts the light balance to be based on that part.

Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze · 01/02/2020 11:48

The percentages thing is new to me! Thanks!

I’ll be trying some of these toaster ideas.

PrimalLass · 01/02/2020 11:52

You can cook spaghetti easier in the frying pan especially gluten free as it has more space and is less likely to "stick" together

Thank you for this one. GF spag is the worst.
