The extremes countries are going to in order to stop it spreading suggest that it is more deadly than we've been told i.e that it's like a flu? We don't shut down countries for flu. What are we not being told?

OP posts:
JamieVardysHavingAParty · 31/01/2020 00:35

That's not Britain shutting down, is it.

2020vision10 · 31/01/2020 00:36

Agree JamieVardy... Hardly shutting down Britain ffs

FromEden · 31/01/2020 00:37

BA is not the government ffs

JustonTime · 31/01/2020 00:37

Lol no - Brexit is Britain shutting down haha.

When I was referring to countries being shut down, I was referring to China. It started with Wuhan about 4 days ago, now all flights to the whole country of China have been grounded. That is extreme.
Or maybe I'm imagining shit.

OP posts:
cuckooken · 31/01/2020 00:37

British airways is just an airline. They cancelled flights. That is not Britain 'shutting down'

Grip needed.

OldTownRoadHome · 31/01/2020 00:37

Nice language upthread 🙄

First potential case in the UK near us today, bit concerning.

cuckooken · 31/01/2020 00:40

When I was referring to countries being shut down, I was referring to China.

Really ? Come on, you literally said So Britain shuts down to save other nations?

Don't try and change things because your not getting the agreement you hoped for.

JustonTime · 31/01/2020 00:40

I don't even know what the symptoms are of this disease? If there's anything going, it's almost guaranteed, I'll get it.

OP posts:
JamieVardysHavingAParty · 31/01/2020 00:40

For the facts, as we know them, it is not extreme. It could be worse than they are telling us, but a totally new flu virus that no-one has any immunity to, justifies everything they are doing.

Monty27 · 31/01/2020 00:42

OP it's misinformed media. I cba to read it. No offence meant.
Scientists are working on drugs that should be available by the end of this year. Apparently.
I wonder how Ebola is going. Confused

OldHarrysGameboy · 31/01/2020 00:43

They're trying to prevent a global pandemic because last time we had one of those 50 million people died and hundreds of millions more were affected. We're no better able to deal with such a scenario than we were at that time due to the lag between the evolution of a new flu virus and the development of a vaccine for it. In fact due to the ease of international travel compared to a hundred years ago containment is more difficult.

And like fuck could the NHS cope with a pandemic given that the regular flu season sends it into a tailspin.

OldTownRoadHome · 31/01/2020 00:43

Quick google tells you the name Novel Coronavirus just refers to it being a new version of a group of know viruses that basically cause cold like symptoms, apparantly other forms of it are some of the main causes of coughs and colds.

Three new version have been found, then named, one being SARS. So basically, yes a flu, but clearly one that can cause nasty symptoms and stead fast.

DillBaby · 31/01/2020 00:43

I actually agree. The scale of the lockdown suggests it’s worse than they’re letting on. There was an article in New Scientist that suggested the mortality rate might be more like 14% instead of the claimed 2-3%. And it’s very contagious.

JustonTime · 31/01/2020 00:44

cuckooken Ye, that's what I meant. Britain had shut down. No flights in or out. Heathrow was like a ghost town..... Zombies were appearing occasionally.

The most dopey reader would know that I was talking about China. There are no flights in or out from Britain. Not sure about other countries. But if it's just a flu, it seems a little bit extreme?

OP posts:
JamieVardysHavingAParty · 31/01/2020 00:47

How many times have you had the flu?

cuckooken · 31/01/2020 00:47

Ye, that's what I meant.

I don't have a clue what you meant. First you said Britain shut down, then you said no, you meant China had shut down.

Britain had shut down.

Oh, it's Britain again..

No flights in or out. Heathrow was like a ghost town....

Don't be ridiculous. There may not have been flights to China but there were hundreds of flights in and out of Heathrow.

JustonTime · 31/01/2020 00:47

Quick google tells you the name Novel Coronavirus just refers to it being a new version of a group of know viruses that basically cause cold like symptoms

Yep, and a quick reality check will tell you that Britain doesn't ground flights to countries where 2000 people have a cold.

OP posts:
PixieDustt · 31/01/2020 00:48

There is not enough research or protection against this new virus hence why they are doing all they can to keep it from spreading much more than it already has.
Should have been limited when the first outbreak occurred to be honest but it's good that countries are doing into extremes now to protect our health service alone and many others and of course people.

JustonTime · 31/01/2020 00:49

cuckoo. You really should google sarcasm.

OP posts:
JustonTime · 31/01/2020 00:51

Yes Dillbaby I agree. I read one headline suggesting that the Chinese were not telling us everything.
They seem extreme measures to me to ground flights and quarantine travellers? It's just the flu?

OP posts:
Apirateslifeforme · 31/01/2020 00:53

Its becoming more worrying, if it can be symptom less, but contagious for 14 days, and judging by the way NHS are treating the people who are suspected carriers, I dont think weve got much chance of not being overrun by it fairly soon.

Redshoeblueshoe · 31/01/2020 00:53

I don't think I should post because I might be deleted

I do believe Grips are available on Amazon

cuckooken · 31/01/2020 00:54

cuckoo. You really should google sarcasm.

There are a few things you should google. I won't list them as I would probably get banned but it's safe to say that if you want to start a discussion you should both know your subject and stick to the point, without adding random bouts of sarcasm. Oh, and try not to change it up too much within the first few posts.

Tangfastics · 31/01/2020 00:54

I think we can all guess that the WHO are worried about it spreading to the Indian sub continent and Africa, because that’s where it could get really out of hand.
