to ask what you’re supposed to put in wire baskets?

I bought an old gold coloured wire basket a few months ago thinking “ooh, that’s pretty storage.” Obviously I am a dickhead because ever since I’ve had it I can’t work out what I can actually put in it that looks nice whilst actually being functional. Any ideas?

It’s not big enough for blankets or towels. Small items fall out of the holes. Anything non-pretty looks shite as obviously you can see all the random crap because it’s just made of wire. I already have a fruit bowl so can’t use if for fruit. Does it have a purpose or am I forever destined to display a pointless empty basket?

We have one. We keep all the dogs toys in it and loves on the floor so they can help themselves and scatter all the fucking toys all over the house

iswhois · 30/01/2020 19:03

Could you use as a fruit bowl? Or get some fake small pumpkins etc?

Bowerbird5 · 30/01/2020 19:06

The only one I have is outside. I put some liner in it with moss showing on the out side and fill it with miniature bulbs and tiny violas. Then I put it at the back door.

I also have 20 eggs sometimes. I have a NT egg spiral and a pottery hen. And some fridge egg holders. I have hens.Grin

Cineraria · 30/01/2020 19:07

Maybe you could take up knitting or just buying odd balls of fancy yarn that feel nice to stick in it.

londoncanyouwait · 30/01/2020 19:25

I've got wire baskets for food in the cupboards, pasta, rice etc
Others for cleaning products, tea towels.

I've basically got baskets of varying sizes all over my house in an attempt to be organised.

I am enjoying everybody’s excellent suggestions. For now, I have shoved some battery operated fairy lights in it until I can find something wankier. I am sitting here looking at my pointless basket of light and wondering how things have come to this.

AlpacaGoodnight · 30/01/2020 21:26

I put a string of lights in mine as I didn't know what to do with it! When my cat was younger he used to sleep in it sometimes but he's too big now!

Racheyg · 30/01/2020 21:33

I love these type of baskets.
I store all my toiletries in one and hairbrush, hair dryer etc in the other

BelfastNonBlonde · 30/01/2020 21:42

Turn it on it’s side and hang on wall like a shelf?

mumwon · 30/01/2020 21:53

hang it out side for large birds to make nests in

TinselAngel · 30/01/2020 22:02

Remote control storage?

milliefiori · 30/01/2020 22:07

line with alinen napkin and fill with freshly baked bread rolls or croissants

Pretty bottles of bubbles or bath oils or stacks of wrapped soaps for bathroom storage/display

Put it in the hall and store gloves and rolled up scarves in it.

Cakeandmarshmallows · 30/01/2020 22:10

@pipandmum I totally read that as you putting your Kindle in a wire basket an was like whhhyyy? Note to self, read properly!

Strugglingtoquit · 30/01/2020 22:13

Thank you OP you’ve made me properly giggle!

Clearly these things were invented because “storage basket” is a reasonable and only slightly wanky purchase that normal people make. Then they have to buy more increasingly wanky things solely to fill it. It’s a gateway wankery!

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 30/01/2020 22:14

I put some smaller ones in dds bathroom for toiletries/toilet rolls.
There were some lovely big round ones in tk maxx earlier but I just knew once I put something in them they’d look crap. They’re more like something you use to dress your home rather than actually USE I think.
(Joanna Gaines uses them to put logs in by the fire and stuff) but if you’re not careful they will just look messy. I prefer concealed storage .

RhiWrites · 30/01/2020 22:15

I collect stone eggs and keep them in a wire basket. Does that help?

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 30/01/2020 22:22

I have one full of rolled up flannels on the bathroom windowsill

user1494055864 · 30/01/2020 22:23

If you are on Instagram, search #wirebaskets for ideas
Basically, unless they have eggs in, they look a bit shit.

RitaTheBeater · 30/01/2020 22:23

Keep your winter hats in it as then come spring, wear it as a hat (again) with an Easter Chick adorning it,

sofaandchoc · 30/01/2020 22:25

Go rogue. Tip it upside down and use as a wanky plant stand

PickledLilly · 30/01/2020 22:26

I did the same, bought a pretty wire basket, moved it around my house for many months as I struggled to find an actual use for it and eventually shoved it on the window ledge of the downstairs bathroom with toilet rolls in it.

theneighbourswindchime · 30/01/2020 22:31

Turn it upside down and use it as mobile phone jail when you all eat dinner together.

DonneWithThis · 30/01/2020 22:32

Eggs!

Undercoverworker06 · 30/01/2020 22:32

Each year for Christmas we compete to buy a "pointless box" for one of my daughters. For reasons known only to her she loves a box, and she'll find something to put in it!

theneighbourswindchime · 30/01/2020 22:35

Oooo I think I'd probably put a selection of succulents in it. Maybe some pebbles painted in naice colours.
