to ask what you’re supposed to put in wire baskets?

I bought an old gold coloured wire basket a few months ago thinking “ooh, that’s pretty storage.” Obviously I am a dickhead because ever since I’ve had it I can’t work out what I can actually put in it that looks nice whilst actually being functional. Any ideas?

It’s not big enough for blankets or towels. Small items fall out of the holes. Anything non-pretty looks shite as obviously you can see all the random crap because it’s just made of wire. I already have a fruit bowl so can’t use if for fruit. Does it have a purpose or am I forever destined to display a pointless empty basket?

I have notelets, birthday/greetings cards, leftover bits of wrapping paper that might be ok for a small gift, tape, glue sticks, a big pair of scissors and odd bits of ribbon/cord in a wire basket on our dresser.

ArbitraryNameChange · 30/01/2020 16:35

I have a wire basket in every room for recyclables

PonteLaCorona · 30/01/2020 16:57

If its pretty wire can you weave some nice fabric/paper/raffia/yarn etc through the wires to make a solid basket and then put small and non pretty things inside?

woodhill · 30/01/2020 17:01

Yes definitely the sort of thing I do.

Have baskets then they end up with random crap in themSmile

Would love to see a picture

BronteSisters · 30/01/2020 17:06

Don’t think it’s meant to be an egg basket - unless most people have about 20 eggs stored in their kitchens at a time?

That would be me Blush

I have a couple of dozen eggs usually in my biggest wire basket from my trio of wanky wire baskets. The other two house fruit and my medications.

Blingismything · 30/01/2020 17:21

I have 'guest towels' in one in the downstairs loo. Rolled up.

HaudMaDug · 30/01/2020 17:32

Spider plant

Redcrayons · 30/01/2020 17:39

I bloody love baskets and I got into the habit of buying them for 'storage' and then struggling to find stuff to put into them. I really want a fancy wire one, but until I can think of something I already own to put in it, I'm not letting myself have one.

Lookedtwice · 30/01/2020 17:47

I could only find two flannels. I am destined to fail. I have shoved a cactus in it. It looks like it’s in plant jail. It fits two bog rolls with lots of extra space. Stupid useless basket.

plant jail

properly snorted at that!

sirmione16 · 30/01/2020 17:57

This is probably my favourite thread ever. Also snort laughed at plant jail. My only suggestion is notebooks/magazines/cookbooks. We own a lot of.... Unread.... Cookbooks

Pipandmum · 30/01/2020 17:59

I put kindling in my wire basket.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 30/01/2020 18:04

I use mine for cat food

pontiouspilates · 30/01/2020 18:08

Ahh OP so glad I'm not the only one that does crap like this, you've really made me giggle!

MidsomerMum · 30/01/2020 18:08

I keep one on the utility worktop for socks that come out of the wash without their partner. When I feel like it I do roll them so it looks intentional.

SandAndSea · 30/01/2020 18:09

Crisps?

jillandhersprite · 30/01/2020 18:16

Do you have room for it in your hall? Can put gloves or woolly hats in it?

fussychica · 30/01/2020 18:16

Lookedtwice the vision of a woman with a wire basket on her head set at a jaunty angle gave me the best laugh I've had all week. Thank you!

Can't help you as I have a similar problem. Mine just sits in the centre of a shelf, naked and empty.

bringincrazyback · 30/01/2020 18:29

Put a plant (in holder, obvs) in it and maybe wind some tiny battery-operated lights in and out of the wire if you like that kind of thing?

Shannith · 30/01/2020 18:33

OP thank you for this. I have a similar affliction but I buy pretty bowls with attractive inner bowl bits.

Think terracotta bowl with light blue glaze inside . I intend to do something wanky with them but they end up as a holder for (looking at one next to me) nail clippers, dud firestick, bit of string, cat laser toy, child's hair clip.

Love the plant jail. Grin

Maybe make some more item jails? Lightbulbs, single apple, stunt pineapple?

makingmammaries · 30/01/2020 18:42

You could do a weird sanpro basket for the guest loo like someone was suggesting on here recently.

mumwon · 30/01/2020 18:56

my expletive tax records invoices etc (can you tell I have just finished my self assessment - & why does everything come in paper still)
Craft & art stuff
materials for sewing
all those seeds I am going to plant this year (& some of them must be as old as ancient Egypt)
tea towels
Ah cake ingredients & cake making stuff ie biscuit shapes etc or sultanas flavour extracts like vanilla or spices …

mumwon · 30/01/2020 18:57

Grin your Brexit storage! complete with wax models & pins from appropriate use! (Cameron.....)

FruityWidow · 30/01/2020 18:58

Save yourself the effort and throw the thing away. You'll only end up kondoing it in 6 months time anyway.
