I see the US are rescuing their citizens.
How does this work?
Do they quarantine the plane, crew & passengers

Surely this just creates more risk

IMHO lockdown should mean lockdown

Also this story....unlikely that he has the virus but again - this plus the 1400 other people not yet tracked down for tests who have come in from Wuhan means if we don't have it here yet it's luck more than judgement!

97 have been tested so far out of c. 2000

DecemberSnow · 28/01/2020 19:19

I was in A&E yesterday and a guy told the staff he had just got off a flight from Beijing...
He was masked and whisked off.....

wheresmymojo · 28/01/2020 19:21

Really? The latest statement from Public Health England said it would be up to 48 hours before the tests on the man in Birmingham were completed.

Is that out of date now?

wheresmymojo · 28/01/2020 19:35

FCO have now warned against all but essential travel to the whole of China (not just Hubei)

stripeypillowcase · 29/01/2020 08:31

ba stopping all flights to/from mainland china

ednclouda · 29/01/2020 08:36

I agree about the healthworkers back here huge risk for them because we know quarantine wont be adhered to properly NIGHTMARE

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 29/01/2020 08:38

There are some incredibly stupid comments on this thread.

Saying all flights and ships in and out of China should be stopped is like saying all flights in the uk should be grounded because there’s an outbreak in Greece. Plus we import loads of things for daily life from over there.*

Hmm

BA finally suspended their flights to all mainland China. Are they stupid as well?

VanillaGodzilla · 29/01/2020 08:56

YABU

Leaving your citizens to cope alone because of a fear they might spread the virus within the country they are repatriated to is a morally dangerous game, imo.

Why stop there? Why not burn Wuhan? Shoot those already infected? Deliberately infect vulnerable and contained people to test cures?

If "the greater good" is such a powerful moral arguement then it won't matter if a few people suffer, right?

MsTSwift · 29/01/2020 08:58

My god what a heartless op! You would think differently if it was your child out there Hmm

JKScot4 · 29/01/2020 09:00

BA have cancelled all flights in and out of China. Sensible measures instead of panic need to be taken.

halcyondays · 29/01/2020 09:17

UK health officials must be incredibly stupid if they think all the people they evacuate are going to meekly sit at home for 2 weeks.

lyralalala · 29/01/2020 09:21

UK health officials must be incredibly stupid if they think all the people they evacuate are going to meekly sit at home for 2 weeks.

With swine flu they called people quarantined at home at random times of the day and night to ensure they were home. If you break an enforced quarantine then you can be arrested.

Most people are decent humans and would understand why they had to follow it, especially if they’ve just been evacuated from higher risk area

halcyondays · 29/01/2020 09:53

I’ve not seen anything that says they’re going to be checking on them like that, just asking them to stay at home.

We already know that there are plenty of people who go out when contagious with norovirus, chickenpox etc so why should this be any different.

They’re only now asking the people who’ve already come back from Wuhan to stay at home, in the meantime these people have been out and about.

Oliversmumsarmy · 29/01/2020 09:57

My god what a heartless op! You would think differently if it was your child out there

But if you have children at home would you be quite as eager to have a potentially infected person in your home putting your children at risk.

What about those people who share a home with those under quarantine. Are they going to stay in for 2 weeks or are the going to be going in and out and mixing with the general public.

MsTSwift · 29/01/2020 10:55

Every man for himself then? Nice attitude

halcyondays · 29/01/2020 10:59

They’ve now said they are going to quarantine the evacuated people, possibly at a military base. Very sensible decision.

Onabun · 29/01/2020 11:02

Australia and NZ are putting their 'evacuees' on Christmas Island for two weeks, seems extreme but totally necessary.

Yes they should have acted sooner, and they didn't, but I strongly feel stopping all flights into and out of china is the main way to try and control this as it has spread out of Wuhan, and there are probably many cases under the radar as some people may only get cold type symptoms. I hope more airlines follow British Airways, although people can still leave via HK.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 29/01/2020 11:13

Would I want someone who potentially infected to share my home ? That's a ridiculous statement !

Do you honestly think potential infection are going to be allowed to waltz through their front door and yell " honey I'm home feel a bit run down put some chicken soup on"?

No there are clearly defined protocols.

I have to say if I harboured or expressed any of the I'm all right Jack views from the OP I couldn't look my children in the eye.

We sit in a hallowed position as citizens of a country that have the means and ability to rescue us if we are in danger around the world, we have no right to comment while we sit under that protection.

We have no concept in this country of exactly how fortunate we are and its embarrassing to hear such privileged individuals Express such exclusionary views. I absolute guarantee if the outbreak was here , no way in hell would anyone stick to the "we would just have to deal with it" mentality, you would be screaming for help.

I am far from a woke liberal but I do recognise my luck that I was born in a first world country and if the least we can do is step in to save citizens abroad (for whatever reason) then we should.

I mean seriously is anyone really naive enough to think that quarantine is being taken lightly ???

KatyCarrCan · 29/01/2020 11:15

I don't think public health, quarantine and infectious disease decisions should be made by 'heart'. It's a risk assessment situation and everyone I know in healthcare or with experience of working in crisis situations is saying make sure the infrastructure is in place for containment.

Yy it's worrying and frightening if you're in the situation but that doesn't negate that the govt is responsible for everyone's health not just those wanting to come back asap. The Ebola crisis showed our airport checks were completely inadequate. You can't trust people to be honest about their symptoms or to voluntarily quarantine. Symptoms have to be checked and quarantine has to be enforced/monitored.

halcyondays · 29/01/2020 11:25

Well they are now taking a robust reproach thankfully, but until now the advice given on the government website to recent returnees from the Wuhan area was, “stay at home for two weeks, if possible get someone else to take your kids to school.”
This was the updated advice which they describe as “highly precautionary”

Before this a man who returned from the area rang for advice and was told, “oh don’t worry unless you have the sniffles” there was no suggestion he should stay at home.

Redglitter · 29/01/2020 11:36

It's on the news headlines now that theyll be quarantined for a fortnight at a military base when they return

ShanghaiDiva · 29/01/2020 11:46

I think it’s important to note that Wuhan residents are under self imposed quarantine as residents are encouraged to stay at home. Consequently, I think most would comply with a self imposed quarantine on being repatriated to the Uk. I realise it’s a moot point as they will now be quarantined.
I live in China, not Wuhan, and ime most people are being sensible and staying at home. I have only been out to the supermarket and the wearing of masks is compulsory in my city. The public holiday and school holidays have been extended and I think most people understand the importance of staying at home and avoiding public places.

WarmSausageTea · 29/01/2020 11:53

While I think it’s right to bring people back and for quarantine measures to be in place, if anyone believes the coronavirus won’t reach the UK (or has already), they must be deluded.

Let’s all work to minimise the risks, but equally let’s not pretend that we’re going to be 100% successful in keeping the UK free of this.

Onabun · 29/01/2020 12:09

The news now is saying anyone returning from China should self isolate for two weeks, obviously this is a should not a must do. We have someone returning from China who is in my 6 year old's class, so will be interesting to see what happens there.
