Why the use of DH,DD,DS,DC?

angell84 · 28/01/2020 01:17

Why are they used parrot fashion by every user on mumsnet?

It is ridiculous! Where is any independent thought? Every single post is littered with hundreds of DH's, DS's, DD's and DC's.

Who calls their husband, "dear husband"? It is pretentious for a start. But what really annoys me is why does everyone say the exact same "code" as each other on here. It seems like a teenage thing to do

Honeyroar · 28/01/2020 20:30

There’s no point moaning about people moaning either. It’s Mumsnet people moan!

IvinghoeBeacon · 28/01/2020 20:32

It’s the looking down on people for using an internet convention that’s been around for decades that seems so odd to me. I don’t use many of the acronyms. It doesn’t make me special or somehow uniquely maverick and un-sheeplike, it’s just my choice. Absolutely no bearing on what other people do

MrsGolightyly · 28/01/2020 20:32

They do, and not just on Mumsnet. Grin

NoSauce · 28/01/2020 20:34

@happycamper11 @NoSauce a very quick search on the word exdh brings up plenty of results so I think you’ll find people certainly do use it. HTH

I have never noticed it. Can’t be that prevalent.

Elle7rose · 28/01/2020 21:07

Yeah it's pointless and outdated- just write 'son', 'daughter' etc.

DadDadDad · 28/01/2020 22:08

Yeah it's widely-used and quick to type - just write DS, DD, etc

icedgem85 · 29/01/2020 17:43

YANBU. It’s totally cringeworthy and lazy too. As for people saying it’s been around since the start of the internet, it hasn’t, and only old ladies used it anyway. Plus even if it was ‘traditional’ it doesn’t mean we can’t move on from it. No one says ‘asl’ any more so why say ‘dear son’. pukes

FelicisNox · 29/01/2020 17:48

If this is all you have to complain about I think we can all assume you've too much time on your hands, although something tells me from your tone that this isn't all you complain about. 🙄

They're forum shorthand. Take it or leave it.

Oh, and it's not "dear husband" it's "darling husband" and it's meant sarcastically as we normally do nothing but beef about our husbands. Same applies to DC, DS, DD etc.

I sarcastically call my kids "the cherubs" when they're being little sods, I don't actually think my kids ARE cherubs.

Take a seat.

Smeagalsmith84 · 29/01/2020 18:05

SO means Significant Other, not Special One

Toomuchtrouble4me · 29/01/2020 18:11

It’s just much quicker than “my daughter in law’ - esp if used several times in a post. But if you don’t like it and is just soooo juvenile - you could always FO.

madjakel · 29/01/2020 18:16

Why the hell does it bother you so much don’t like it? Cya.

IvinghoeBeacon · 29/01/2020 18:39

What’s wrong with being an old lady?

Vynalbob · 29/01/2020 18:41

Mmmm mums these days don't spell things correctly.....and another thing why can't everybody have their own code.
I am fluent in gibberish but my XG2%5 (I don't know either) only speaks double Dutch

Please someone post a link to a message board dedicated to the Queen's English

TTF...... E

FaveNumberIs2 · 29/01/2020 19:22

You are not being unreasonable. I don’t like it either, mainly because I don’t know what half of them mean, especially when we get to the shorthand for a whole bloody sentence!

Rtruth · 29/01/2020 19:38

@angell84 I’m assuming this is a wind up?

Not to be rude, but I assume you understand the concept of language. A code where a group can communicate using a shared terminology.

Your post reads like you’d go to France and shout “ Ne parle pas français, je n'aime pas ça!” at French people.

janj2301 · 29/01/2020 19:43

My favourite one is GP, grand parent or doctor, throws me every time

Twenty2 · 29/01/2020 20:28

I've been on the MSE forum (that's Money Saving Expert Wink) for years longer than I have MN (Mumsnet) and they used the standard DH/DS/MIL etc there too. I'm also on other forums where they use them. Don't like them - don't use them, but fuck off telling other people they're 'sheeple', 'teenage', 'pretentious' and other twatty insults. It doesn't make you better than people who use them.

Wait till the OP (original poster) finds out that not everyone on MN is a mum - or even a womanGrin

BertieBotts · 29/01/2020 20:58

I'm just coming back to find out what NORWICH stands for :o

I hardly think DD, DH, DP etc is teenagery - don't the teenagers have some new slang by now? Surely it's old fuddy duddy speak, evidenced by it being in use on a site for mums?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 29/01/2020 21:01

I’d far rather have DC/DH etc than “little one” or “wee man” or “hubby”

DirtyBlonde · 29/01/2020 21:04

"My favourite one is GP, grand parent or doctor, throws me every time"

Even worse if you also need to check the Global Position of your Gunea Pigs

ChicChicChicChiclana · 29/01/2020 21:31

@BertieBotts - knickers off ready when I come home Grin. Unfortunately KORWICH doesn't quite work!

karenjkayjay · 29/01/2020 21:33

This is a big bug bear of mine as well, drives me mad when people do that all the time on here. It’s so quick to type why on earth do people do it. So annoying grrrrrrrrrr

Juliette20 · 30/01/2020 06:29

DF is confusing as well.

VivaLeBeaver · 30/01/2020 06:41

I’ve been on MN for 18 years and the acronyms have worked perfectly well all that time. Just saves typing time, not sure what’s to get so worked up about.

IvinghoeBeacon · 30/01/2020 07:03

Karen you must spend your entire time on mumsnet in an absolute rage. But hopefully reading the full thread has clarified for you “why on Earth” people use the acronyms
