Why the use of DH,DD,DS,DC?

angell84 · 28/01/2020 01:17

Why are they used parrot fashion by every user on mumsnet?

It is ridiculous! Where is any independent thought? Every single post is littered with hundreds of DH's, DS's, DD's and DC's.

Who calls their husband, "dear husband"? It is pretentious for a start. But what really annoys me is why does everyone say the exact same "code" as each other on here. It seems like a teenage thing to do

SIOB is a good acronym, it means 'sharp intake of breath' but if you fancy it can also mean 'sort it out bitch' and nobody will be any the wiser. Grin

Does anyone remember writing S.W.A.L.K on envelopes? Yes.
To my valentine. I might restart it on all outgoing mail. Grin

BillHadersNewWife · 28/01/2020 10:03

I always think of DH as "Dickhead"!

EmeraldShamrock · 28/01/2020 10:08

When a pp is told RTFT. I read it as
"Read the Fucking Thread"

Goldengroveunleaving · 28/01/2020 10:14

I lurk a lot but don’t post a lot (for many years and on other forums too). It took me a while (in the past) to realise that “PFB” stood for “Precious FirstBorn” rather than “Precious Fucking Baby”, which I always thought sounded a bit overly aggressive! Grin

Afraid I don’t like “DH”, “DC” etc. either. It’s not the “H”, it’s the “D”. However many times I read it I still hear the “Dear” in my head at some level and subconsciously feel it sounds cutesy and saccharine. (Although anything’s better than “hubby”.) A minority view, clearly.

LonginesPrime · 28/01/2020 10:14

Where is any independent thought?

why does everyone say the exact same "code" as each other on here

Because that's how codes work - it's a common understanding of a term so if you have MN mavericks who use the acronyms to mean something else, people will misunderstand them.

It's just shorthand. I wouldn't call my family 'dear' in everyday life but I can't get too excited about someone saying DH on an Internet forum.

Comefromaway · 28/01/2020 10:18

We first got the internet at home back in 2001 so almost 20 years ago.

These acronyms were in use back then.

I am typing this on a pc at my desk.

24hourshomeedderandcarer · 28/01/2020 10:21

agree 100% its my pet hate on here

just use bloody proper words

you dont speak like that in real life why bloody on here

IvinghoeBeacon · 28/01/2020 10:24

“ A minority view, clearly.”

Um, clearly not. The bit that is minority is that every time you look at it you are thinking “dear” specifically rather than your brain skipping over it because it’s internet shorthand and not actually a reflection on anyone’s feelings or character on here

IvinghoeBeacon · 28/01/2020 10:25

Haha at 24hourshomeedderandcarer railing against the entire internet

Lilmisskittykat · 28/01/2020 10:26

Well I thought it stood for darling - so dear is actually less annoying now

I think it sometimes reads really inappropriate sometimes when it's like darling / dear husband just cracked me, it a twat... because .... has been shagging around etc... so I can see why it might be annoying in some posts for that reason

Sparklingbrook · 28/01/2020 10:28

So you can only type things on MN if you would actually say them in RL? I will bear that in mind. Grin

Montyman · 28/01/2020 10:28

I read STBEX as stupid bastard ex for ages until I saw a thread with it spelt out 😅

MsPepperPotts · 28/01/2020 10:30

When I first joined MN I honestly thought DH was short for "Dick Head" mainly because on the Relationships board they're seemed to be a lot of them about! Grin

MsPepperPotts · 28/01/2020 10:32

@Montyman yeah I thought the same Grin

EmeraldShamrock · 28/01/2020 10:35

@24hourshomeedderandcarer Okay. I don't even notice.
Based on the thread I change it in my mind to dear husband or dickhead husband / dear children or dickhead children depends on the context of the thread.

grasukdesim · 28/01/2020 10:35

@EmeraldShamrock

That's what it means so you're right to read it that way :)

Lailaha · 28/01/2020 10:35

Oh, it's you again, OP. See you as hard work in real life as you are on MN?

LonginesPrime · 28/01/2020 10:37

Goldengroveunleaving I always read PFB as "pretty fucking bonkers", which often lends itself well to the context...

E.g.
'I make everyone refer to my baby by his first name and all four of his middle names when they talk about him. We spent the best part of a year coming up with the perfect combination of names (including six iterative MN polls) and we fended off two cousins trying to steal one of our names (one I had to kill, and she's bigger than a size 12 so disposing of the body wasn't easy, I can tell you). We didn't go through all of that for people to not even use DS's full name. Am I being PFB?'

Yes. Yes you are.

When a pp is told RTFT. I read it as
"Read the Fucking Thread"

As you should. That's what it stands for.

I just wish more people would

FlamingoAndJohn · 28/01/2020 10:50

Ah is this the regular, "I've only just joined but I want to tell you all how you are doing it wrong so change to how I like it" post?

Sparklingbrook · 28/01/2020 10:56

Yes @FlamingoAndJohn, often closely followed by 'I think a like button would be great' and 'why is there no quote function?'. Then much complaining about MN not being like other forums. Because they all have to be identical for some reason.

IvinghoeBeacon · 28/01/2020 10:59

And “really there should be an acronyms list” Grin
