Why the use of DH,DD,DS,DC?

angell84 · 28/01/2020 01:17

Why are they used parrot fashion by every user on mumsnet?

It is ridiculous! Where is any independent thought? Every single post is littered with hundreds of DH's, DS's, DD's and DC's.

Who calls their husband, "dear husband"? It is pretentious for a start. But what really annoys me is why does everyone say the exact same "code" as each other on here. It seems like a teenage thing to do

OP posts:
lisasimpsonssaxophone · 28/01/2020 15:44

YANBU. The one that annoys me the most is people saying ‘DC’ when they mean children in general, so ‘how many DC do you have?’ or ‘I’m having a birthday party and inviting six DC’ or ‘is that film suitable for DC?’ It looks so silly!

PorpentinaScamander · 28/01/2020 15:45

if you are using your phone it's actually easier, with predictive text, to write the whole word

DS/DP etc are saved in my phone dictionary so no harder to type than the whole word. Actually quicker and easier. Which is the point surely?

If I ever meet anyone awesome enough that I'll consider letting them share my life I shall refer to them as MP (my precious) just so I'm not accused of being a sheep Hmm

NotALurker2 · 28/01/2020 15:45

"And not everyone uses the 'code' either. Some people say "SO" which I bloody hate! It means Special One!"

I thought SO meant Significant Other.

What does OH mean? Other husband???

DadDadDad · 28/01/2020 16:05

OH = other half

Happygirl79 · 28/01/2020 16:10

It would be helpful if someone could list a translation of the commonly used jargon on here
I thought DH was dependent husband!

PorpentinaScamander · 28/01/2020 16:11

@Happygirl79 there is one. It's been linked to 2 or 3 times already on this thread.

DadDadDad · 28/01/2020 16:12

@Happygirl79 - you mean the acronym list that is available on the Talk dropdown menu and has been linked to upthread as well.

Faez · 28/01/2020 16:14

There really should be an acronym list somewhere

PorpentinaScamander · 28/01/2020 16:16

There really should be an acronym list somewhere

Yea there should. Why didn't anyone think of that Hmm

TrickyKid · 28/01/2020 16:17

Yanbu it's one thing that has always made me cringe on here. Totally unnecessary.

FizzyIce · 28/01/2020 16:19

@Sleeveen nailed it

typewrriter12 · 28/01/2020 16:21

It makes reading and writing posts a lot easier for people who are not great at keyboard skills. I also think there a lot more to worry about than how other people write on posts

pictish · 28/01/2020 16:21

Hubby! Hubby! hubby!

I don’t give a fuck and neither does my hubby!

BIWI · 28/01/2020 16:26

FFS.

RTFT.

HTH.

pictish · 28/01/2020 16:26

OH - other half.

lazylinguist · 28/01/2020 16:26

Using abbreviations which are standard or conventional within a certain organisation or site is perfectly normal and doesn't make people sheep. Hth.

TriangularRatbag · 28/01/2020 16:27

I don't like acronyms at the best of times, because they obfuscate. So I'm always inclined to reply to posters who use this ludicrous nonsense by expanding the abbreviations to "your darling husband" etc, which sounds delightfully sarcastic Grin

lazylinguist · 28/01/2020 16:28

But starting a thread that's been done umpteen times before... well, that frankly is a bit lacking in individuality.

V1Rotate · 28/01/2020 16:29

I don't like it either but DH is better than SO or worse, hubby. I instantly exit and hide any thread with hubby in the OP.

Cacaca · 28/01/2020 16:31

Absolutely hate the D prefix - especially when used as exdh or exdp- just call them ex or soon to be ex. What’s so D about them if you’ve split?

Faez · 28/01/2020 16:44

Yea there should. Why didn't anyone think of that

Wink
PorpentinaScamander · 28/01/2020 16:46

Oops. Looks like your sarcasm went over my head Faez Blush

Jomarchsburntskirt · 28/01/2020 16:50

I don’t use them. I think it can make it difficult to understand what the poster is talking about, especially if you’re new to mumsnet.

Dieu · 28/01/2020 16:51

I've never used it, and in fact can't bear it. I'd much rather take a few extra seconds to type out 'my daughter'.

blueheaven97 · 28/01/2020 16:53

I'm so glad someone said this. Why can't people just say "husband" instead of "DH" for example? Is it really saving so much time?
