I booked my short getaway to London a while ago and never get to travel...but I'm scared to catch the virus and bring it home. Aibu?

Yes YABU. There are no confirmed cases of this virus in the UK. You're far, far more likely to catch flu.

YABU
As said, you're more likely to catch the flu or even norovirus at this stage, I'd guess.

Flu is much more dangerous then this. More people die of flu every year.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/01/2020 11:50

You are more likely to pick up a cold on the tube than something at Heathrow.

Delatron · 27/01/2020 11:53

These threads are getting ridiculous. I was in Heathrow yesterday, flew from France which has ooh 2 cases? I was more concerned about picking a cold/flu up and washed my hands lots but not concerned about Coronavirus.

YABU

timeisnotaline · 27/01/2020 11:53

Its fine but I wouldn’t compare it to a cold on the tube. Much more likely to catch but colds have a much much lower fatality rate than we seem to be dealing with with this coronavirus.

The mortality rate of the new coronavirus has been higher than the flu.
ATM, you're more likely to catch the flu.
The (currently circulating) flu itself is not more dangerous, though. So far.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/01/2020 12:02

The point I was making is that the chance of you picking up any virus at Heathrow is much much lower than the chance of picking up a virus like a cold, flu, noro etc on the public transport getting to and from Heathrow

Lweji · 27/01/2020 12:02

Please come to the probability thread. Grin

Planes are notorious for recycled air, though. And all that hand touching while flight attendants serve food and drinks. Shock

wibblysnail · 27/01/2020 12:06

Flight attendants seem to be expert at avoiding that i think, I don't think there was any hand contact on my long haul flights recently.

Lweji · 27/01/2020 12:13

Good point, they do wear gloves when collecting all the rubbish.

Thefaceofboe · 27/01/2020 12:33

Yabu. If you are serious you need to sit at home for the rest of your life and wrap yourself in cotton wool

mencken · 27/01/2020 13:16

what you can do is lots of handwashing and use anti-bac gel - a good idea anyway if you are from 'out of town'. I always come home with a cold when I go to a big city now.

unless the flight diverts to China the odds on getting coronavirus are minimal.

On my flight they always put the drinks on the tray rather than in your hand, even when it was the window or aisle passenger and it would have been easier to hand you the drink to pass over rather than the whole tray. I didn't think anything of it at the time but now I think back I don't think there was any hand contact whatsoever.

travellingInSEasia · 27/01/2020 14:20

On my recent flight all cabin crew wore masks as well as gloves. Every single person at the airport in Vietnam was wearing a mask, including check in staff, all staff in fact.

YABU

Wrap yourself up in some bubble wrap just in case. Have fun

coconuttelegraph · 27/01/2020 14:34

Come to London, be the UK's first confirmed case of the virus - who do you think you are going to catch it from Confused

Silversurfie · 27/01/2020 14:52

Screening measures and health hubs have been put in place for flights in from China and confined and isolated to one terminal - Terminal 4. I have family who work for an airline and are flying in and out of LHR regularly and they are not concerned. The daily average total number of passengers coming and going at Heathrow is 219,458 (50.5% arrivals / 49.5% departures). It's still 'business as usual'. Chances of you catching it pretty minimal I think. Enjoy your trip :-)

adaline · 27/01/2020 14:59

YABVU.

Delatron · 27/01/2020 15:53

Anti-bac gel is no use against viruses and is a bad idea as it disrupts the good bacteria we have in our systems.
