Hi guys. So we're down in South Africa at the moment and so far no reported cases. We're flying to attend a wedding next week and im so worried its making me physically ill :( the AIBU part is that we're just flying 2 hours to another province but like lots of counties we have a huge Chinese population and im only scared because of our baby. I'd really not like to go though hubby and other son couldn't give a shit and thinks im stupid but this virus is spreading so rapidly. Please tell me to calm the Ef down :(

@DoubleTweenQueen not as appalling as her blatant intolerance and prejudice against an entire race of people simply because there is a flu epidemic in the country that matches their ethnicity. That is fucking disgraceful.

I suppose something positive to take from coronavirus is it’s truly showing people for what they truly are.

LakieLady · 30/01/2020 23:12

@NotYourHolidayDick, made me laugh so much I startled the dog. Grin

goodgodingovan · 30/01/2020 23:12

@BoneyBackJefferson I'd prefer the beer in that case Wink

Runmybathforme · 30/01/2020 23:15

FFS, you’re being ridiculous.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 30/01/2020 23:20

I love it when I learn random unconnected facts on a thread!

From memory:
Separate amniotic sac and separate placenta is earliest,
then shared placenta, separate sac
then shared placenta, same sac.

5 weeks from start of last period as that's when you count pregnancies from

7 day period
2.5 weeks later unprotected sex
7-9 days later egg splits

4.5-5 weeks pregnant

Very interesting. I shall trot that out when required as if I learned this sage wisdom from studious studyGrin

And hysteria root related to the womb. It's sooo obvious but I never made the connection - hysterestomy...hysteria..doh!

Lycidas · 30/01/2020 23:22

Sad to say but people who panic like you are far more likely to perish in emergency situations.

BennytheBall · 30/01/2020 23:25

You can either -

Listen to posters on here and get a grip

Or

Get over to the preppers threads where you’ll meet similar levels of batshit craziness.

cousinboneless · 30/01/2020 23:28

The Brits returning from China are being quarantined at a struggling hospital ten minutes away from my house. I think you're overreacting.

MoonlightBonnet · 30/01/2020 23:31

Is this part of a pattern of anxiety around the health of your child? Your fears are out of all proportion to the risk (which is obviously negligible) and your geography so bad that you seem to have confused a third of the world into a big swirly mass with ‘brown people live here’ scrawled across it. Get treatment for your anxiety and buy an atlas.

PotholeParadise · 30/01/2020 23:41

MoonlightBonnet

Atlas might be a bad idea. Someone else pointed out that she was on the right continent for Ebola which has been classified as an International Health Emergency twice.

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/01/2020 23:46

How people are so willing to be outraged by their own fucked-up interpretation of other people’s comments is truly beyond me.

atomicblonde30 · 30/01/2020 23:55

Lol okay @Double

That is just the cases that get reported. There will be plenty of cases where it doesn't even get reported to hospitals/gps. Most people who are fit and hethy just stay indoors in front of the telly until they have fought it off. So the actual mortality figure is probably much lower.

Not exactly. They know that people don't necessarily bother going to the doctor, too. Working out how serious illnesses are is their job, so people who don't report is a factor in their estimates.

Here's what the American health department says about calculating how many cases of flu there might have been:

Some people with influenza will seek medical care, while others will not. CDC estimates the number of people who sought medical care for influenza using data from the 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, which asked people whether they did or did not seek medical care for an influenza-like illness in the prior influenza season (6).

CJsGoldfish · 31/01/2020 00:21

Are you people thick or what?

No. Are you?

You really need to calm down OP as this much anxiety must be affecting the baby.

user1471582494 · 31/01/2020 00:24

The mortality rate is only 3% or something. Even if you do get it the chances of dying are low.
You are being ridiculous and over the top paranoid.

LilQueenie · 31/01/2020 00:44

check out the live map for updates then at least you can keep track of it. I wouldn't panic too much however being around those who may well have been travelling in and out of china for the last 2 months does put a little risk. the first case was actually 8th december 2019 yet we were told nothing until January. therefore how much have we been told as its certainly not made mainstream news. As chinese new year was extended this time round there has been a lot of travel for celebrations. I would feel much the same tbh. There are a few corona viruses this being one of the more hard hitting ones. Its likely you have been exposed to similar in people in the street, shops etc and you haven't caught it. treat it as you would any other cold. Wash hands, use tissues. good hygiene. Its what they say on the cdc.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 31/01/2020 00:55

The Brits returning from China are being quarantined at a struggling hospital ten minutes away from my house.

@cousinboneless

There is major mass hysteria currently unfolding on a local community Facebook page, some concern is due to the struggling hospitals ability to cope but most of the posts are outright Nimby scaremongering.

Retroflex · 31/01/2020 01:21

Not only are you being unreasonable, but you are being racist too @Areyoucomingalong with this statement "but like lots of counties we have a huge Chinese population"

Ridiculous to assume that every person of a certain race poses a risk to you! Grow up!

Aneley · 31/01/2020 01:21

I think that a lot of PP have been unfairly harsh here. She is NOT worried about herself, she is worried about her BABY. And all the statistics in the world don't help if you're unfortunate to be in that 1-3%.

To those giving an example of the swine flu - both my DH and his brother were in that 2-3% that caught it and it was awful - not sure how they would recover if they weren't adults.

While I totally get the arguments in favour of her flying - her anxiety alone would justify staying put. This is a woman feeling worried about her baby - surely we can all understand that and cut her some slack?

Lweji · 31/01/2020 01:35

the first case was actually 8th december 2019 yet we were told nothing until January. therefore how much have we been told as its certainly not made mainstream news.

I hope that's not a hint at a sort of conspiracy theory.

The first few cases often are not even noticed. It was only at the end of December that the new variant virus was associated with a cluster of cases of a serious respiratory illness with no known cause. Literally the 31st. And the market was closed the next day.

Lweji · 31/01/2020 01:41

The death rate at this stage is lower than 3%.
But 3% is 1/33, which is not that low. Even 1% would be 3 people dead on a plane where all 300 passengers got ill.
Mind you, that's an almost impossible scenario, though.

People infected seem to pass it on to 2-5 people according to the last I read. Which is quite high and explains the virtual doubling of cases at some point.

But, as a pp mentioned, it's mostly a matter of concern for health authorities than for the general population.

Finally, distance means shit when you have plane travel. This virus can pop in anywhere an infected person goes.

Spamantha · 31/01/2020 01:44

Well she hardly endeared herself by calling other posters thick.

But what should we do? Should we encourage her to shut herself and her child at home until this all passes? She is (potentially) taking a domestic flight in a country that, so far as I can tell, has one case of the virus and it isn't the lethal strain. The least safe part of her journey would probably be taking a car ride to the airport.

This is needless anxiety.

LilQueenie · 31/01/2020 02:01

sorry but I do believe its not all being told in mainstream news. A few people from Wuhang have made videos which tell a lot more.

HavenDilemma · 31/01/2020 02:14

Here's everything you need to know about Corona Virus

Have you considered purchasing a face mask and a grip to go with it @Areyoucomingalong?
