Hi guys. So we're down in South Africa at the moment and so far no reported cases. We're flying to attend a wedding next week and im so worried its making me physically ill :( the AIBU part is that we're just flying 2 hours to another province but like lots of counties we have a huge Chinese population and im only scared because of our baby. I'd really not like to go though hubby and other son couldn't give a shit and thinks im stupid but this virus is spreading so rapidly. Please tell me to calm the Ef down :(

It’s a bit rich to call people thick when you think Indonesia and India are close enough to have the virus, erm, jump a few thousand kilometres.

Rosehipbubbles · 30/01/2020 21:22

My DH came back from China 10 days ago - he is fine - I'm not worried at all.

Spamantha · 30/01/2020 21:22

Genuinely a wonder that the OP ever leaves the house (or let's anyone else inside).

NotStayingIn · 30/01/2020 21:23

I think you are being utterly ridiculous and your tone in your messages is misplaced. There is nothing more annoying then someone calling other people thick, when they themselves are too stupid to understand a situation. If you are like this with your DH I don’t blame him for seriously questioning the relationship.

However, I think your DH can’t force you to do something you don’t want to do. You stay home, he goes. I feel a bit sorry for him having to explain to people that you are too scared to take an internal flight due to Coronavirus, but I guess being married to you he might well be used to having to explain your childish ways.

andyindurham · 30/01/2020 21:27

I've got some sympathy with the OP. I'm flying to Kazakhstan next week for work and that's got me a little bit worried (for reference, KAZ has a short border with China, albeit far from Wuhan and far from where I'm going). At the moment, I've no intention of cancelling the trip. However, I'm paying more attention than usual to government health advice and the like, and reviewing my travel insurance (needed to do that anyway, so not a bad thing).

That said, I don't think I'd cancel a trip across the country where I was already based. That seems to be taking caution a bit too far.

ThrowingGoodAfterBad · 30/01/2020 21:29

Assuming this is for real, how old is the baby and how do you normally feel about life op? Could you possibly have some sort of post natal mental health issue?

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 30/01/2020 21:30

No one knows how serious or not the situation is.

It is simply too early to tell.many people are early in the course of the disease so the medics have not seen enough to work out the pathogenesis ie the ways it is damaging organs etc.

We know the numbers are rising fast and no one has existing immunity to the virus as it is novel.

It may well mutate like SARS did as it has found a new human host and will adapt.

So it is impossible to say how things will develop. WHO have declared a global health emergency, which is rare.

Namechange8471 · 30/01/2020 21:30

Op do you remember the swine flu drama?

Sound familiar?

You will be fine.

I am very cynical and think the whole thing is a distraction for trumps impeachment

Soontobe60 · 30/01/2020 21:30

OP, your hysteria is totally out of proportion to the risk.
Just out of interest, did you also believe that you had to stay away from gay men just in case you caught AIDS back in the day?

sosomany · 30/01/2020 21:30

I feel for you OP and YANBU. Who knows how this is going to pan out.

For people who think it's all fine, why do you think WHO has declared an emergency?

It is very early days but epidemiologists who spend their lives studying these things clearly think this could be serious.

Only time will tell.

1frenchfoodie · 30/01/2020 21:43

You are flying within a country that does not have a single confirmed case. Whether people around you are of Chinese origin is irrelevant. Of course we get concerned about our babies but it seems mainly the elderly with pre-existing health conditions that re particularly vulnerable in any case.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 30/01/2020 21:44

"This virus is a global crisis. Are you people thick or what?"

You clearly know 0% of fuck all yourself.

You're being completely ridiculous.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 30/01/2020 21:47

"..... to go though hubby and other son couldn't give a shit and thinks im stupid but this virus is spreading so rapidly. Please tell me to calm the Ef down"

You're being stupid. Calm the fuck down.

1frenchfoodie · 30/01/2020 21:48

That a PHEIC has been declared does not change the vanishingly low risk for this trip.

And as for this statement It is very early days but epidemiologists who spend their lives studying these things clearly think this could be serious Epidemiologists I know are incredibly frustrated at the volume of baseless scaremongering going on. Not to say they are not concerned at all, this is serious but not cancel all flights serious, at least not now.

kateandme · 30/01/2020 21:50

op it being a global issue doesnt mean what you think.it doesnt mean its spreading globally. it means now everyone is able to come togethe to work on the problem.so there is no boarders,no "well we dont work within those countries so not our problem/ability to help" it means everyone now see this issue and basically wants to get on board to help.be it some uk doctors now working on the strain.or someone in france working on better masks to send etc.it means we arent leaving china to deal with it we are all in now 'gloablly' trying to help

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 30/01/2020 21:50

Epidemiologists I know are incredibly frustrated at the volume of baseless scaremongering going on

Same.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 30/01/2020 21:51

The epidemiologists advising WHO seem to be saying there is potentially a serious problem, hence global emergency. I am not scare mongering but it is too early to say how the situation will evolve.

It is very possible that the situation will look different by next week when OP is travelling.

BreconBeBuggered · 30/01/2020 21:52

Is the declaration of an emergency not part of a strategy to control this outbreak? I personally wouldn't be panicking, but OP, as you don't seem amenable to being calmed down by internet randoms, it's not the end of the world if you don't go to a wedding.

kateandme · 30/01/2020 21:53

i dont understand you might be scared though.some of us get scared about a lot less! but then to live and carry on we have to try and rationalise it.its how anxiety works.you have to ccept your fear but then work round it.
and ok,this might be too big for you to get by.im sure your not alone with that.
could you dh help you with these fears.could you work together on this.
if you cant then you cant.but dont live to regret it.and if these fears or more than this event then maybe see how you can seek help in some way.
dont be too hard on yourself.fear is a shitty thing.only you know whether you can get by it on this one.

Legoandloldolls · 30/01/2020 21:55

Well I dont consider myself too thick as I have a Biology degree. I do think its pointless to worry yourself sick over something you can't stop.

It's going to spread to the UK and that's pretty certain. I'm not overly worried. So if it does kill me in a months time at least I will have enjoyed my last month on earth relatively stress free. I dont think viruses care much for the hosts IQ either.

I worked on bird flu. I was part of team employed to report on it and locate its spread so I know that was pretty nasty. Dh had it but me and the kids didnt catch it off him or was symptom less. Agree with pp that time will tell. Right now we know very little. Hysteria isn't going to change any outcomes. I think it's the fear of the unknown

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 30/01/2020 21:57

And can we drop the word 'hysteria' it is a historically nasty way of saying women are over emotional because of their wombs.

Whyamiwastingtime · 30/01/2020 22:01

Actually, it looks like it will be a pandemic. i think WHO dont want to call it one as it scares people Not sure how much of this article you can read but you can always buy a sub.

trixiebelden77 · 30/01/2020 22:01

Goodness you must be really stressed every year before the new flu vaccine is released and you can get it on the first day it comes out.

As I assume you do, given your fear of potentially fatal respiratory infections.
