Hi guys. So we're down in South Africa at the moment and so far no reported cases. We're flying to attend a wedding next week and im so worried its making me physically ill :( the AIBU part is that we're just flying 2 hours to another province but like lots of counties we have a huge Chinese population and im only scared because of our baby. I'd really not like to go though hubby and other son couldn't give a shit and thinks im stupid but this virus is spreading so rapidly. Please tell me to calm the Ef down :(

Here's the link to the latest update with the countries affected and the numbers:

Lweji · 30/01/2020 22:45

If you are worried, think that this is the best time to travel, at least before it goes global, if it ever does.

Be alert to WHO recommendations, and take basic precautions such as washing hands properly and avoid touching eyes, mouth or nose with your hands. This is good practice during flu season anyway, but the Southern Hemisphere is usually less affected these months, their Summer.

Don't panic, don't ignore it.

cdtaylornats · 30/01/2020 22:46

Bubonic plague would be better - we have antibiotics to kill that.

SympatheticSwan · 30/01/2020 22:49

@FenellaMaxwell
A simple fact is that the seasonal's flu mortality is not 1%, not even close. I probably should have elaborated - you would have encountered a casualty from flu through every major employer or school (as in, someone's relative died from it etc). This is the simplest way to check whether a high "prevalence" statistic makes sense - think about any subpopilation with limited selection and think if there are any intersection points. As a comparable statistic, think about, say, frequency of twin births.

atomicblonde30 · 30/01/2020 22:50

You’re being incredibly xenophobic OP. Not all Chinese people are infectious you know.

PotholeParadise · 30/01/2020 22:54

I did have swine flu when 5 weeks pregnant. I'm still alive but I do wonder if that is what split the egg and gave me twins.

If it was 5 weeks later, the swine flu didn't do it.

Identical twins (unless conjoined), come from an egg that split less than two weeks post conception. Depending on whether they share a placenta and/or amniotic sac, you can determine to a couple of days accuracy when the fertilised egg split.

From memory:
Separate amniotic sac and separate placenta is earliest,
then shared placenta, separate sac
then shared placenta, same sac.

I'll find a table in a minute.

Casiloco · 30/01/2020 22:54

For those of you who are worried that the WHO have declared a global emergency, this is simply so that they can enforce various restrictions in order to protect the most vulnerable to this kind of thing - those with pre-existing conditions, the immune-compromised and those who are most likely to have come into contact with others with the virus. You would also need to live in a part of the world where there has been a significant number diagnosed with the virus.

Unless you fall into one of the above categories which you clearly don't, you are MUCH more likely to die in a road or domestic accident, so OP, you do need to calm down. You have completely lost perspective.

And yes, you could do with some geography lessons!

BoneyBackJefferson · 30/01/2020 22:54

Have a beer

Coronavirus. AIBU please calm me down
goodgodingovan · 30/01/2020 22:55

Ohfurfucksake

user1477391263 · 30/01/2020 22:57

No, the mortality rate for spanish flu was about the same as coronavirus. It killed such large numbers because it got everywhere.

Littlemeadow123 · 30/01/2020 22:59

@PotholeParadise

That is just the cases that get reported. There will be plenty of cases where it doesn't even get reported to hospitals/gps. Most people who are fit and hethy just stay indoors in front of the telly until they have fought it off. So the actual mortality figure is probably much lower.

BoneyBackJefferson · 30/01/2020 22:59

goodgodingovan

If you don't want a beer maybe a soft drink?

Coronavirus. AIBU please calm me down
Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 30/01/2020 22:59

I don’t understand. I don’t get the numbers. How can they estimate the mortality rate if they don’t know how many are or have been infected?

In theory, this virus could have been around for weeks and infected thousands who have had very mild symptoms.

I worried a bit about Ebola. I’m not too worried about this.

Littlemeadow123 · 30/01/2020 22:59

*healthy

iano · 30/01/2020 23:00

This is v bizarre! You want ppl to tell you to calm down which they do and you then call them thick.
You sound unstable. For what it's worth yabu

goodgodingovan · 30/01/2020 23:00

@BoneyBackJefferson did you tag the wrong person?

My comment was about the op.

AmelieTaylor · 30/01/2020 23:02

This virus is a global crisis. Are you people thick or what?
If you’re always this rude, I don’t imagine you’ll be missed

m0therofdragons · 30/01/2020 23:03

@PotholeParadise

5 weeks from start of last period as that's when you count pregnancies from.

7 day period
2.5 weeks later unprotected sex
7-9 days later egg splits

4.5-5 weeks pregnant.

GrumpyHoonMain · 30/01/2020 23:03

As a south african your biggest worry about this virus is that it has been found in Europe and India. There is a lot more European and Indian tourism / business travel to and from South Africa than China and those flights haven’t been cancelled!

MyuMe · 30/01/2020 23:06

When I was in SA, the house has a high wall with an electric fence on top, an iron security gate to secure to secure the sleeping areas, bars on the windows, I was not allowed to go anywhere alone because of the threat of violence.

You're worried about a virus in a country several thousand km from where you are?!

Ok....

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/01/2020 23:06

My God - some of the comments on here are appalling! This mum is genuinely deeply anxious about the health of her baby, figs.

Areyoucomingalong - I totally understand your anxiety. The implications of this virus are not fully known at the current time. No-one can tell you what you should do. You need to try and consider the facts - the flight is a short internal one; there are no known cases currently in your country; the wedding guests are not coming from the high-risk area. That is all positive. The likelihood of your baby coming to any harm is very small.

Take a deep breath. What do you want to do? It’s your decision to make. Wedding, or not? Think calmly. Make your decision. It’s not a crime to be cautious on behalf of your baby and your own mental health X
BoneyBackJefferson · 30/01/2020 23:06

goodgodingovan

Nope, just thought that it would add a humorous response given the position of your post to mine :)

PotholeParadise · 30/01/2020 23:07
