They cant call their house this?

I have just been to visit my Aunt and Uncle, both early 80s, very quiet living couple.
They live in a culture de sac of other retired folks.
They have put up a sign on the gatepost at the end of their drive.
They proudly made it themselves.
The house is now named "Belle End"
Do I tell them?? Blush

There is a small village in Dorset called “Shitterton”

And one in Devon called "Crapstone" Grin

You are Stewart Lee and I Claim My Five Pounds ....

You know what cul de sac literally means, right? Makes Belle End seem tame!

@Serin

There appears to be no similar name on Royal Mail and Post Office's postcode finder which suggests that those organisations get the message!

It costs a **ing fortune to create an entry with the Royal Mail for a house name. The only way to do it is to go through your local authorities processes. In Birmingham that means the same process (and costs) developers use to name new roads.

So a lot of house names are informal ... (although I notice with interest that a lot of companies seem to have picked up our informal housename - presumably from selling our details).

Andpppy · 26/01/2020 17:40

They won’t be able to register the name as both the post office and the local authority can reject registrations for a variety of of reasons - obscenity - actual or similar is one such reason. I recall they quote this as an example. Even if the address was accepted it anyone can object to it and it has to be changed which is a pain if utilities and so on are directed to “belle end”. Finally should the house be sold for inheritance or to pay for care home fees in due course it will rip about 10k off the selling price.

Happygirl79 · 26/01/2020 17:41

Its cul de sac... Was that an auto correct?
I would explain the meaning of their new house name
Im sure they'll change it or perhaps they just have a great sense of humour?

Stormtrooper676 · 26/01/2020 17:42

Given their roles I'd mention it especially if they have visitors relating to either role. Would save lots of embarrassment even though it is hilarious

Frenchw1fe · 26/01/2020 17:50

Dandelion is Pissenlit in French. Literally piss the bed.

MumtoEG · 26/01/2020 17:52

Please tell them ☺️

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 26/01/2020 17:57

Back in the 50s my african grandparents called their house 'Kidonapo'.
Sounds sort of exotic until you realise it was actually 'Kid on a po'. It was entirely deliberate

I'm being so dense. Could somebody please explain this one to me? Blush

EstebanTheMagnificent · 26/01/2020 17:59

Your window to do this might have gone if you’ve already visited but perhaps you could get another family member to try, or put it in a housewarming card - say, ‘Love what you’ve done with the name, Auntie Prue! So funny.’ If it’s deliberate they’ll laugh with you and take the compliment; if it isn’t then they’ll ask what you mean (or ask someone else later). If you really suspect that they have no idea then it’s kindest to let them know before it causes any embarrassment - and if they do know, then there’s no harm done.

Oscarsdaddy · 26/01/2020 18:16

Absolutely brilliant, I knew a couple of older years but with a tremendous sense of humour who called their house Dunbonkin’

Papilionem · 26/01/2020 18:18

I recently told my daughter that I wanted to watch The Inbetweeners. She looked hesitant and said 'it's very rude you know mum...'I retorted: 'your generation didn't invent rude, you know'.I would say they know exactly what they are doing.

NoobThebrave · 26/01/2020 18:21

Oh that made me laugh! My mum and MIL wouldn't know the phrase and I can see how they thought it through in all innocence. I think I would say as they might get upset when they find the postie in hysterics!

I have been trying to name our house, it's really hard! I went through the trees etc trying not to be too twee or naff....it was only when I said "Haw House" out loud I realised it wasn't quite right Grin

MollyMinniesMum · 26/01/2020 18:28

They know!!

Chickoletta · 26/01/2020 18:31

None of my older relatives would know what it meant. I think this is genuine.

Serin · 26/01/2020 18:33

My cousin, their DD has been over today and explained that Belle End could have another meaning.
They were surprised and amused but took it down immediately. Then they joked that they are going to give it to their friend for his birthday.
I'm so going to join the WI in a few years though, sounds like they rock life.

Offer to have a professional sign made for them. Their reaction may give a clue.

ktp100 · 26/01/2020 18:49

Funny & way less embarrassing than some of the supposedly amusing & 'clever' names some people pick for their houses. Some are just awful!
