I have just been to visit my Aunt and Uncle, both early 80s, very quiet living couple.
They live in a culture de sac of other retired folks.
They have put up a sign on the gatepost at the end of their drive.
They proudly made it themselves.
The house is now named "Belle End"
Do I tell them?? Blush

'So what. This is the equivalent of children inserting an 'I' on signs advertising rentals to covert TO LET into TOILET.'

I ALWAYS wanted to do that!

I'm not convinced that it's just children, on their way home at midnight from the pub....

I like the US comedy equivalent Grin

Hang on a minute! Now I'm missing out. I've never seen this done, but really now feel the urge to do it!!

There is a house to let down the road. Hmmm, tempted to see if I've got a rattle can in the garage Grin

dontgobaconmyheart · 27/01/2020 03:52

Oh dear, you'll have to tell them. Reminds me of a property in the locality I used to live near to so passed often called 'Manhood End' - basically just a middle class bell-end isn't it. Always gave me a giggle. It was quite a naice area.

"Shillbottle" Grin

AlphaJura · 27/01/2020 09:52

I think they know. I think you should say I 'like what you've done with the name there, very clever Wink'. Then guage their reaction. The word bellend has been around longer than the Internet. I heard it at school in the 90s. Not far from me, in the next town there is a road called 'Slag Lane', we always have a chuckle at 'The Butts', seen that a few times Grin, up the road from me is 'Cock Hill'.

Cabamba · 27/01/2020 11:53

You might do them a favour and find a way to tell them. I've had many a chuckle to myself when passing idyllic cotages with 'Rose Cottage' plastered proudly on the gate or door; they can't have any idea of what Rose Cottage means to millions of sailors (and others itk) the world over.

Hopeisamyth · 27/01/2020 13:06

@longtimemarried.. Its the bulbous end of a penis.

crunchycornflake · 27/01/2020 14:39

Don’t want to hijack your thread OP, but thought you’d enjoy these actual place names. only in Oz 🤣

crunchycornflake · 27/01/2020 14:41

Secretlifeofme · 27/01/2020 14:55

@Cabamba er, what does Rose Cottage mean please? ConfusedBlush

Cabamba · 27/01/2020 18:15

It refers to that part of a designated sick bay where men are treated for sexually transmitted diseases. Thus, Rose Cottage is a place to avoid and not a name for one's home.

WellHolyGodMiley · 27/01/2020 18:16

😮
I did not know that!

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 27/01/2020 18:34

Rose Cottage is usually used to refer to a hospital mortuary

PureAlchemy · 27/01/2020 18:42

I’ve only ever heard the hospital mortuary definition for Rose Cottage.

Cabamba · 28/01/2020 07:25

A quick browse will reveal the std connection.
I was first told of it by a man who had served in the RN during the war, and he had lurid tales of one particular procedure which could cause the patients/victims to scream loudly enough to put anyone off going ashore for a 'good time'.
Inevitably, in post war years he holidayed in the South West of England where many a dwelling was called 'Rose Cottage', and I lived in that area for over 20years and never failed to be amused as I went passed.

CassidyStone · 28/01/2020 15:38

Rose Cottage has always been the code name for the mortuary at the various hospitals I have worked in. You telephone the porters and tell them a patient needs transferring to Rose Cottage, thus they know to bring the special trolley.

It's news to me that RN used the name for designated treatment centres for those afflicted with STDs. Everyday is a school day.

Ticky80 · 29/01/2020 10:54

Are you sure it isn’t a cul de ball sac 😂😂😂😂 and of course they don’t know....a minister isn’t going to call his house bellend if he knows what it means. You need to tell them they’ll be mortified! X

WellHolyGodMiley · 29/01/2020 10:58

Tell them to google it, just to makecsure there are not too many other cottages in the area with the same name.

HighNetGirth · 29/01/2020 11:30

I don’t think ‘cul de sac’ means “arse’s bag”, I think it means “bag’s arse”, as in the bottom of the bag (from which there is no way out, hence using it as a name for a dead end road).

Hadalifeonce · 29/01/2020 11:34

I think there are several roads around the country called Bell End, so although it causes a chuckle, it's not unusual.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/01/2020 11:41

Do they have a favourite literary figure they could name the house after instead? Shakespeare, Austen, Wordsworth? I think just using the surname of such an esteemed writer would make a perfect name for a fine house.

Alternatively, are they into French literature at all?

seekingwaxwings · 29/01/2020 11:43

I was very surprised to see this on a house in a local naice area, but on closer inspection it actually says CLINT Cottage.

That's not what I say every time we drive past though. Grin

Love it!

Ginburee · 31/01/2020 09:23

Rose cottage is used as a term for the mortuary, I did a search and didn't find any links re treatment areas for sti's.
