to be annoyed with food in the wrong size packages

This is a light-hearted but annoying 1st world problem. Why do some foods always seem to come in the wrong size of package?

filled pasta - the standard size of 300g is too much for 1 person and not enough for 2

soup - the standard size of 600ml is to also too much for 1 meal so I end up keeping 1/3 of a pot and then not using it

cream - some recipes need 2 or 3 tablespoons so why is it impossible to buy less than 300ml? My fridge is full of 1/2 tubs which go horrible

so how do supermarkets decide on the standard size? and what else is always the wrong size?

SproutMuncher · 24/01/2020 15:44

I agree about the cream but can easily manage the full portion of the other two Grin

JasonPollack · 24/01/2020 15:46

Oh my goodness I would be absolutely stuffed if I tried to eat even half one of those packets of filled pasta. We would share one of those between our family of 5. As for cream I never use it in cooking so I couldn't say.

MsMarvel · 24/01/2020 15:47

I agree with the soup!!

Half a tub is not enough, so end up trying to have the lot and its too much especially when you also make 2 cheese rolls to have with it

JasonPollack · 24/01/2020 15:47

Sorry just wanted to get in there first. Grin

YANBU.

Baked beans also. Half a tin is not enough, whole tin too much.

TinnedPearsForPudding · 24/01/2020 15:49

I'm just here to watch the competitive under-eaters wonder how anyone could possibly eat HALF a packet of filled pasta...Smile

LaMarschallin · 24/01/2020 15:50

JasonPollack

Sorry just wanted to get in there first. grin

Nicely done. My compliments Smile

You can get 150ml pots of cream though.

namechangenumber2 · 24/01/2020 15:51

Didn't you used to be able to buy smaller tins of soup?

Morgan12 · 24/01/2020 15:52

I can eat the pasta portion no bother.

Agree with the cream though.

SproutMuncher · 24/01/2020 15:53

Says a lot about MN jasonpollack that I didn’t initially realise you were joking!

alwaysnamechangingalways · 24/01/2020 15:54

@JasonPollack one pack of this pasta does a family of 5!? Shock

Please say you have copious amounts of garlic bread with it or are me and my partner just greedy to have one each Blush

Nonsense, are you all borrowers?

BarbaraofSeville · 24/01/2020 15:55

I agree with the beans and the soup, and the cream to a lesser degree - you can buy 150 ml pots and I just use any spare in really luxurious coffees or hot chocolates, or on pudding.

But irritatingly many smaller packages of soup etc cost nearly as much for the smaller amount, so are not a solution. But for the beans, if we have any of these leftover, we just freeze them and throw them in a chilli.

For filled pasta, I eat half a pack with grated courgette, pesto and a bit of vegetable stock to make it a bit soupy, and that's OK for lunch.

I think they're more aimed as a starter - in Italy, pasta is generally eaten in small portions prior to a meal of meat or fish, so maybe that's what dictates the portion size?

But I've just bought some from Costco, and it's in 500 g packs, so maybe half of one of them is suitable as a main for one person, maybe with sauce, cheese and salad?

Nottobesoldseparately · 24/01/2020 15:56

A family sized bar of chocolate??

No, that's a ME sized bar of chocolate!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/01/2020 15:57

So 1 packet of filled pasta isn't one portion?....

LaMarschallin · 24/01/2020 16:00

13 posts in and we're already in to "cancel the cheque" territory?

Anyway, JasonP, you're the reason that obesity is sweeping the country.
3 pieces of filled pasta is enough for anyone, providing they're accompanied by huge amounts of salad.
Except for my 7'2" son who weighs 8 stone and inhales 6 packs at once.

BouleBaker · 24/01/2020 16:00

The soup one definitely. 300ml not enough but 600ml leaves me feeling awash with soup.

Also, why are all garlic breads, no matter what brand, cut into 9 slices? That's only useful for a family of 3.

PenguinsOnParade · 24/01/2020 16:00

I'm not a big eater normally but can easily manage a full packet of the filled pasta on my own. Especially if it's spinach and ricotta filling.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/01/2020 16:01

I find it amusing when they've obviously set the portion size on a share size bag of sweets or crisps to fit in with calorie guidelines or whatever they think they can get away with and if you read the label, they are suggesting that the bag contains 4.5 portions.

Who are they expecting to share - 4 people with some leftover, 5 people, one of whom only gets a tiny bit, I don't understand their thinking.

HolyForkingShirtbaIIs · 24/01/2020 16:06

Agree about the soup.

DobbinOnTheLA · 24/01/2020 16:07

Am I too late with my very tall and whippet thin son who would starve on a meagre packet of filled pasta, tin of soup and pot of cream for before bed and snack?

SquareAsABlock · 24/01/2020 16:07

Where are you buying it from? Asda's own do 150ml pots.

On a recent 'how many slices of toast' thread, someone posted that her DS would have 4 slices and a whole tin of beans as a snack.

I genuinely had no idea as to whether she was being serious or parodying the 'my lot inhale cheese and ham sandwiches a loaf at a time and we have fruit delivered daily by the barrelful' crowd.

I agree with you OP. Who decided garlic bread should come in a pack of 9!

myBumJuiceSmellsLikeRoses · 24/01/2020 16:29

You can freeze cream OP.
Freeze the rest in smaller portions like an ice cube tray.
