to be annoyed with food in the wrong size packages

This is a light-hearted but annoying 1st world problem. Why do some foods always seem to come in the wrong size of package?

filled pasta - the standard size of 300g is too much for 1 person and not enough for 2

soup - the standard size of 600ml is to also too much for 1 meal so I end up keeping 1/3 of a pot and then not using it

cream - some recipes need 2 or 3 tablespoons so why is it impossible to buy less than 300ml? My fridge is full of 1/2 tubs which go horrible

so how do supermarkets decide on the standard size? and what else is always the wrong size?

YANBU, I agree absolutely. I’d like to be able to buy cream in a properly small pot, say 100ml. I might have a vague chance of using it up then. Fresh pasta - my DH (6’4”) can finish a pack, I struggle with half a pack. For tins of beans etc, it’s less of an issue as I’ve discovered that the plastic cap off the top of decent instant coffee (e.g. millicano) fits nicely onto most standard tins.

We mostly finish cream here by inventing reasons to make custard. A dash of vanilla & a decent splash of cream wonderfully improves custard made from powder. Although it’s also good in coffee, & cocoa too.

I think Mumsnet's sarcasm detector is broken.

I think Mumsnet's sarcasm detector is broken.

For sure. Grin

I agree about the cream. You buy the small pot and have to keep thinking of things to use cream for! However half a pack of pasta is plenty served with salad and half a pot of soup with bread and maybe cheese. I guess it just depends on your appetite.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 24/01/2020 22:29

I bought filled pasta yesterday for tea, one pack plus a tub of sauce, garlic bread and salad served the three of us (me and two teen boys). I’d maybe do a pack and sauce between two but without the sides. And I used cream in my curry tonight.. 150ml tub from Tesco (and two happy cats 😻).

mumwon · 24/01/2020 22:31

Quorn nuggets in Aldi (sorry about the veggie bit) why 11 in a pack? it doesn't divide into 2 or 3 properly - not that I could eat more than 3 they are quite large & I have after affects...

UndertheCedartree · 24/01/2020 22:32

@JasonPollack - I just spent a good few minutes wondering how a pack of filled pasta could feed 5! Grin

AhoyMrBeaver · 24/01/2020 22:34

Jesus, Warburton's with their bloody 9 crumpets. 9 leaves you with an odd crumpet left in the cupboard until it's the texture of a discus. Make it 8 or 10 in a packet. They're taking the piss out of me because a packet of 6 is not enough and they know that.

NewNameChange2020 · 24/01/2020 22:37

The juice packs in 3 drives me mad too! Generally everything I want to get is in a stupid size, I bloody hate it. It's all just to make us buy more, which leads to either overeating or loads of food waste.

AlCalavicci · 24/01/2020 22:44

@BouleBaker I havent read all the thread yet so sorry it this has been said but here you go 10 slices of GB

TrainspottingWelsh · 24/01/2020 22:45

I'm horrified by the family of 5 sharing a whole packet between them. We get 3 meals for our family of 4, and as a proper mumsnetter we only eat the filling, pasta is far too bloating and everyone that eats carbs must be morbidly obese.

One garlic baguette would last us a year, we chop it down into 26 portions and freeze it, then the teen dc get to share a piece once a fortnight on family film night. The rest of the time they prepare 1 calorie kale based meals for the whole family to sit down and enjoy together.

Seriously, what is this about freezing left over cream? The only thing to do with leftover cream is Irish coffee, or stick it in a pan with some chocolate and either eat immediately, or if you're feeling virtuous make it into some form of fudge.

Grembolina · 24/01/2020 22:56

I just eat the filling out of the pasta because I couldn't manage a whole square.

AlCalavicci · 24/01/2020 23:01

@pelirocco123
I know us on MN like to try different things and all that but freezing cream and beans is a step to far , creamy beans blurg Grin Grin

Therunecaster · 24/01/2020 23:03

You lot have had me in stitches reading this! Grin

circleorsquare · 24/01/2020 23:18

I add some dried pasta to the pan and cook that for a bit then chuck the filled pasta in at the end as 1 pack not quite enough for 2 of us!

ClosedTheBlueEyes · 24/01/2020 23:19

Garlic bread in 9 slices is perfect for 1.

Otherwise, buy a ready to bake French stick and make your own garlic butter. That way you can cram as much as you like in and don't have slices with measly butter portions Grin

TheQueens · 24/01/2020 23:26

FFS honestly some of you really need to not take everything you read on the internet (particularly on MN) so seriously! Grin

Gulsink · 24/01/2020 23:33

Tuna. Too much for one sandwich, not enough for two.

PickAChew · 24/01/2020 23:36

600ml of soup is a nice portion for 2. It's not like a 400ml can was ever meant for 1.

RainbowMum11 · 24/01/2020 23:54

1 tin of beans does me & DD6
1 packet of filled pasta - if I make it with a sauce with enough veg & chicken then I can do me 2 meals.
Soup - could easily eat a whole carton/tin!

bsc · 25/01/2020 00:04

Do people not realise that you can buy cannelloni? You don't make it from lasagne sheets...

Also Sainsbury's sausages come in 6s and 12s.

Filled pasta- I hate! But DS has half a pack a time... But can't finish it (he is 10 though)

Garlic bread- I buy the flat, pizza shaped ones- you can cut into as many pieces as you like! (And the baguettes always have a nasty aftertaste, I never buy those)

9 crumpets is plainly ridiculous!

I hate baked beans, soup, and cream!

Ok, maybe I'm the weirdo on this thread?

TotHappy · 25/01/2020 02:00

Pfft, of course I eat a whole tin of baked beans! And sausages. On two slices of toast. With butter. That's lunch.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/01/2020 08:18

9 crumpets works for us because DP eats 4 at a time. I like crumpets but they fall into the 'I like them but they make me more hungry not fill me up even if I eat them with eggs or cheese' category so I don't generally eat them but if there's one going spare I'll have it as a treat, as a tiny snack or along with other food to avoid accusations of competitive undereating.
