to be annoyed with food in the wrong size packages

This is a light-hearted but annoying 1st world problem. Why do some foods always seem to come in the wrong size of package?

filled pasta - the standard size of 300g is too much for 1 person and not enough for 2

soup - the standard size of 600ml is to also too much for 1 meal so I end up keeping 1/3 of a pot and then not using it

cream - some recipes need 2 or 3 tablespoons so why is it impossible to buy less than 300ml? My fridge is full of 1/2 tubs which go horrible

so how do supermarkets decide on the standard size? and what else is always the wrong size?

Until recently filled pasta used to come in 400g packets, which did 2 people with salad etc.

AllergicToAMop · 24/01/2020 18:35

Where is everyone getting there 150ml
Tubs of cream from

The Asda. 70p for Double Cream

MrsMigginsLovelyBaps · 24/01/2020 18:42

Not quite the same thing, but what about those small juice cartons being sold in packs of 3? I presume most people are like me and buying them for children's packed lunches. There are 5 school days in the week, so why pack them in threes? Drives me mad.

Janek · 24/01/2020 18:43

Also Sainsbury's. Also, cream lasts an astonishingly long time in the fridge. Far longer than you'd expect, but you have to hold your nerve because it doesn't seem like it should still be edible. Easily three weeks ime, possibly more.

SheShriekedShrilly · 24/01/2020 18:44

Lasagne sheets, the fresh pasta ones because cooking and draining is too much faff - they used to come in packets of six, now the packets are smaller but there are ten. Neither works for cannelloni for a family of four.

Cream isn’t an issue here - the kids put it on their porridge.

I do find passata is the wrong size - I always end up with a bit under a half of a packet left or sauce that’s too liquid.

And fresh herbs - there’s always more than the recipe calls for, but not enough to make a double batch.

Halloweenbabyy · 24/01/2020 18:44

@DobbinOnTheLA LMAO.

Blatherskite · 24/01/2020 18:50

You cook and drain dried lasagne sheets @SheShriekedShrilly??

Why not just layer them uncooked? They cook in the oven.

SheShriekedShrilly · 24/01/2020 19:07

@Blatherskite To make cannelloni, you need to be able roll them up. Can’t do that raw.

Notso · 24/01/2020 19:10

Sausages, the ones I like from the supermarket come in packs of twelve. There are six of us so there's not enough. Two packs are too many.
The ones from my butchers come in packs of seven Confused

Blatherskite · 24/01/2020 19:17

@SheShriekedShrilly that makes sense. Sorry, I had missed the bit about cannelloni.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 24/01/2020 19:21

We split filled pasta in two and it's okay but I insist on sides Grin I could definitely eat one to myself.

I'm with you on stupid serving sizes overall.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/01/2020 19:25

I freeze all these odds and sods, our freezer is full of bags of fresh pasta, ice cube trays of pesto, herbs, tiny tubs of passata, beans etc. All sorts.

It means that the freezer is a bit of a jumble sale, but nothing is wasted and I'm pretty good at clearing up the bits and pieces to go in chilli or similar.

KittenVsBox · 24/01/2020 19:28

Packets of sausages dont work for us.

Condensed milk is frequently sitting in our fridge.

Not quite the same thing, but I dont understand the frequent offer on my preferred shampoo& conditioner. Buy 2, get one free. I use them at a very similar rate (conditioner bottles are smaller, but there us only ever a tiny amount of shampoo left when the conditioner finishes), so dont want an e tra of either - and dont want to buy 6 in one go!

ZenNudist · 24/01/2020 19:30

I thought this wad going to be about having too small food in too big packets. Con artists.

Verily1 · 24/01/2020 19:43

But a chest freezer

MarshaBradyo · 24/01/2020 19:46

I have been thinking the same re cream lately. Funny. It’s a new consideration so a timely thread.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 24/01/2020 21:21

Half of that pack of pasta does me and my 10yr old (half a pack each). We could both eat more than that but 2 packs is a bit too much so we make do. No way on this planet could you do a whole family of 5 on it (a standard bag of dried pasta possibly just about but not those tiny packets of filled pasta).

Gogolego · 24/01/2020 21:31

Dammit nearest Asda isn't quite worth the trip just for cream but almost/ tempting

Shadowcats · 24/01/2020 21:38

Oh my goodness I would be absolutely stuffed if I tried to eat even half one of those packets of filled pasta. We would share one of those between our family of 5.

Competitive under eating taken to a new level.

lollybee1 · 24/01/2020 21:45

Some people HAVE to make their food stretch, but I'm pretty sure I could manage a full pack of pasta.

OneHanded · 24/01/2020 21:49

I eat a 600ml pot of soup it’s the perfect amount by itself!

Ginkypig · 24/01/2020 21:52

Family of 5 my arse!

unless you are talking about something else rather than the packets we are thinking about or you mean it in the Italian way as a small starter.

On another note I want pasta now!

What is everyone's favourite filled pasta?

mrsbyers · 24/01/2020 22:02

Leftover cream goes in coffee here for a treat

WoodliceInSunderland · 24/01/2020 22:11

2 packets of filled pasta does 3 of us very well. It's a great way of sneaking extra veg into the DC without him noticing.
Normally he picks all the veg out of anything he can but give him spinach and ricotta pasta with a roasted veg and tomato sauce, he wolfs it down! Grin

WoodliceInSunderland · 24/01/2020 22:13

And garlic bread in 9 slices is great!
Not everyone is lucky enough to have 2.4 children, some of us are a family of 3 and get annoyed by things always being sold in 2's or 4's.
