to be annoyed with food in the wrong size packages

This is a light-hearted but annoying 1st world problem. Why do some foods always seem to come in the wrong size of package?

filled pasta - the standard size of 300g is too much for 1 person and not enough for 2

soup - the standard size of 600ml is to also too much for 1 meal so I end up keeping 1/3 of a pot and then not using it

cream - some recipes need 2 or 3 tablespoons so why is it impossible to buy less than 300ml? My fridge is full of 1/2 tubs which go horrible

so how do supermarkets decide on the standard size? and what else is always the wrong size?

I think half a tin of beans is an ok portion size, & I can eat 600ml of a healthy soup, but I definitely agree about the filled pasta - v annoying size!

RhymingRabbit3 · 24/01/2020 16:30

I have never managed to successfully freeze cream, it always splits. Would probably be alright in a sauce but definitely not good for puddings.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 24/01/2020 16:34

Filled pasta with AAA battery for scale.
3 pieces per person. How bloody stingy are you. My toddler would eat more than that!
We get 2 portions per pack.

Garlic bread can be portioned up when fresh and chucked in the freezer if you don't want to use it.

God, you're right!
I'd measured them against AA batteries Blush

I'll up the portion to 4 pieces next time.

But no salad dressing in that case.

Zaphodsotherhead · 24/01/2020 16:41

Lightly whip the cream before you freeze it. Should stop it splitting.

LaMarschallin · 24/01/2020 16:41

Hang on - AA batteries are bigger than AAA, aren't they?

Down to 2 then. And still no dressing.

DobbinOnTheLA · 24/01/2020 16:42

I see I was too late and LaMarschallin got there first with her tall, slim son Sad

I buy garlic pizza bread. And add cheese because I'm whacky like that.

My local shops only sells cream in 100ml. In fact they quite often don't have any normal cream but always have clotted cream. Weird.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/01/2020 16:44

I'm ok with the beans and soup. I have the soup with a nice slice of brown bread and the beans with a baked potato. I do buy nice soup though, no Heinz or Baxters. The cream I only buy rarely and then try to remember to make a quiche.

DobbinOnTheLA · 24/01/2020 16:45

AA batteries are wider than AAA.
You could say they are plus sized but that's a very negative energy

I just want ensure to ensure gigantic-but-slender boy a long-life and nothing terminal while he rests and recharges.

Wishesanddreams · 24/01/2020 16:57

Cream one drives me insane!!! 😂

HoneysuckIejasmine · 24/01/2020 17:07

I buy my soup in tins. 400g, much better.

I'm now getting flashbacks to Father of the Bride

BarbaraofSeville · 24/01/2020 17:07

Garlic bread in packs of 9 is obviously for the family of 4.5 to have with dinner before sitting down to watch a film with a bag of sweets with 4.5 portions in.

parietal · 24/01/2020 17:09

Ocado does not have any double cream cartons smaller than 227ml (that is the expensive organic one).

and yes, I could freeze it in ice cube trays, but do I really have the time & energy for that?

ChippyMinton · 24/01/2020 17:46

YABU to use tins and packets. Make soup and pasta from scratch and eat as much as you like.
Doesn't everyone keep a cow and make their own cream?

CastleCrasher · 24/01/2020 17:50

why do sausages and burgers come in packs of 8 (or 4 for burgers), but hot dog rolls and burger rolls in packs of 6?

Happygirl79 · 24/01/2020 17:54

I know what you mean!
I buy ice cube freezer bags from Amazon and use them to freeze unused portions of cream. Then pop out as many as needed later. Great for adding to soups or for making a sauce

AllergicToAMop · 24/01/2020 17:56

Ooooh. Leftover double cream!
Whip it up and do layers of lotus biscquits and thin layer of cream. Keep layering until you run out. Let set in a fridge overnight.
Heavenly!

Asda also now does single portions of chickpea and some beans! Very happy with that!

BarbaraofSeville · 24/01/2020 17:57

I have never been able to buy lasagne sheets that fit in any lasagne dish that I have ever owned without having to cut them to size which is quite hard with dried pasta.

DobbinOnTheLA · 24/01/2020 18:01

You could make butter with the leftover cream.

I can't because I don't want to, but you definitely should.

pelirocco123 · 24/01/2020 18:03

Freeze the cream and baked beans

BirdieFriendReturns · 24/01/2020 18:14

I’m full after three filled pasta pieces! How can anybody eat more than that?

Gogolego · 24/01/2020 18:19

I agree Op
I cook all of it and what I can't manage is lunch the next day
Soup is annoying
Where is everyone getting there 150ml
Tubs of cream from

Can I add those meal deals for stir fry meals from. I assume they're for 2 people but I reckon you could feed 2 battalions when I cook them

Also can those meal deals which are a side a wine and main for a £10 can they do some which are easier to portion out so that a single person can portion and freeze it. Taking about the main not the wine

TheBoogieMonster · 24/01/2020 18:31

I can't fathom anyone who lets cream go off in their fridge.

Surely there must be something you could eat it with??

Chocolate cake, sponge pudding, crumble, even a bowl of indulgent porridge for breakfast...just me?? 🤷‍♀️

Chocs44 · 24/01/2020 18:32

I eat half a packet of filled pasta and then freeze the rest. U can cook it from frozen. I hate wasting food!!
