Coronavirus are you worried?

So this virus has infected 600+ already and seems to be picking up pace. It’ll be in the UK any day, if it’s not already. AIBU to think this is going to have a big fallout and are you concerned?

How would they use it on patients? The virus is INSIDE them Confused Dettol sprays and wipes kill coronaviruses on hard surfaces like door handles. I've never heard a more bizarre statement!

woodchuck99 · 04/02/2020 20:09

If the dettol wipes kill it, they could've just used it on those patients. Job done!

Lol. I'm sure it would have killed the virus very effectively. Unfortunately it would also kill patients so not much good!

jasjas1973 · 04/02/2020 20:12

Apologies, i was going on a R4 program recently but it seems alcohol based ones are far more effective. ... which i haven't got :(

mindfulprep · 04/02/2020 20:20

Sorry, yes, that wasn't a sensible logic Blush (wrote it in a rush)

But, I still think it's imprudent to say that dettol kills all coronaviruses, including the novel one, when there is no proof. Unless someone can show a study about it

NaturalBornWoman · 04/02/2020 20:25

The alcohol based ones are selling out everywhere. I got some a few days ago but tried to repeat order today and it's out of stock. I've ordered a 5L container which is 70% alcohol but it's got a 2 week lead time.

I somehow don't think the label states that it kills all coronaviruses including the new one. The new one didn't even exist when the label was manufactured. It's highly likely that it does kill it but if you want to wait for a study to be done first by all means don't buy it.

ofwarren · 04/02/2020 20:30

Which brand did you buy NaturalBornWoman? So much is sold out!

mindfulprep · 04/02/2020 20:31

Ofwarren - you clearly need to get out more if you have not heard a more bizarre statement

Btw, dettol has officially said that they cannot confirm its product's effectiveness against the new strain, as they don't have access to a sample of the virus for testing. It's only effective against the human coronavirus.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.livemint.com/companies/news/dettol-won-t-kill-novel-coronavirus-clarifies-company/amp-11580747145494.html

There are many types of coronaviruses

Woodchuck - I'm buying it and using it, as I'm sure it won't hurt.

if you want false sense of security to think it will protect you 100%, go ahead

ofwarren · 04/02/2020 20:34

Well it is rather bizarre to think that if a Dettol wipe kills coronaviruses on a hard surface, then it must also kill it in the human body. 2 entirely different things! Bleach also kills coronaviruses, but they aren't going to get patients to drink it. Killing on contact is totally different to curing a virus in the human body.

NaturalBornWoman · 04/02/2020 20:38

ofWarren I got it from Amazon, it's easy hygiene 70% alcohol hand sanitizer gel and I thought it was on a delay like most of them but it's been dispatched. I just went looking for 70% alcohol stuff.

woodchuck99 · 04/02/2020 20:39

if you want false sense of security to think it will protect you 100%, go ahead

Even if it does kill the virus it is not going to protect anyone 100%.

ofwarren · 04/02/2020 20:42

That's a good idea NaturalBornWoman thank you

mindfulprep · 04/02/2020 21:04

Ofwarren - I already said I was in a rush when I said that and I'd like to retract it.

I think it's more bizarre (and irresponsible) to advise people that dettol kills all coronaviruses when dettol themselves has made a statement that they can't confirm it.
Unless you hold their shares in which case I understand Wink

Also, I think people should know that using alcohol gel is not as good as washing hands properly with soap and water for many reasons. Don't be complacent with using hand sanitisers

I think you're clutching at straws here to try make yourself sound less ignorant following your previous comments.
It's not bizarre or irresponsible to say that something which kills other coroner viruses, viruses and bacteria will very probably kill this one too. It wouldn't even be bizarre or irresponsible to say that it definitely will as this may encourage people to use it which is certainly better than not using it. We don't know for sure that hand washing will kill the virus so do you think it bizarre and the responsible to tell people to do that as well?

woodchuck99 · 05/02/2020 09:31

The news that a third UK coronavirus patient contracted the virus in Singapore (and the UK response that all passengers from about 6 Asian countries should self quarantine and call 111 if they have symptoms within 14 days of return) is giving me serious pause for thought.

  1. I don’t know what day this person got back to the UK, but today there are only 28 confirmed cases reported in Singapore, all supposedly in quarantine. The actual cases must be way higher.
  1. How on earth was this person diagnosed with coronavirus?? Think of all the people coming back from the whole of the Middle East!!
Until today, they were not testing them, Either they are seriously ill and it made the medics think, ”hmmmm.. what if??” or there is a much higher level of surveillance going on.
  1. Finally, what is the point in implementing public health measures for travellers returning from countries who have done a good job of identifying cases, like Japan, Singapore, South Korea etc. but not those that haven’t like Laos, Myanmar etc. ??
BackInTime · 06/02/2020 21:11

I would like to know more about the person diagnosed today who had travelled from Singapore. When did they return? Where did they fly from and to? Have the other passengers been informed and will they be monitored? Has this person been in contact with other people like family members, work colleagues since their return and will these people also be quarantined?

meredithgrey1 · 06/02/2020 21:44

BBC news says
"The new UK patient is understood to be a middle-aged man who was isolated at home, tested positive and was taken to St Thomas's Hospital in central London"
Which, if correct, doesn't sound like he was seriously ill before diagnosis. Obviously we don't know the full details - maybe they were in contact with someone in Singapore who had it and told health officials that. It doesn't really make sense for there to be a higher level of surveillance than we're aware of, because if you don't tell people then they won't present themselves for testing so what would be the point.

Sorry, haven’t read the whole thread but an update from my brother in China is that situation is grim. He is virtually a prisoner on his school campus, no pupils allowed to attend school so he is the only one there. He is allowed out at 10am and must be back by 12. There are suited guards at the gates. His temperature is taken regularly.
WiFi and internet is mostly down where he is. he managed a brief phone call to my mother. She felt as if he was being very guarded in what he was saying (monitored?).
She asked if he would be coming home and he replied, “ It’s very hard to say at the moment” . all very worrying

everythingthelighttouches · 06/02/2020 22:00

Meredith according to the telegraph he went into a&e in Brighton on Sunday but transferred from Royal Sussex (is that in Brighton?) to St. Thomas’ last night.

I imagine we’ll get more clarity tomorrow.

everythingthelighttouches · 06/02/2020 22:01

Middle East should have said Far East

Motorina · 06/02/2020 22:06

Royal Sussex County is in Brighton, yes. My parents met there.

yolofish · 06/02/2020 22:17

dementedma that's awful about your brother, I hope he stays safe.

meredithgrey1 · 06/02/2020 22:21

@everythingthelighttouches oh ok, so different reports from different places then. I totally get why they can't say too much because of patient confidentiality etc but other countries seem to be a bit more open about things like the condition of patients. Obviously the risk is still really low in the UK but at the same time people are worried and I sometimes feel like the lack of information just leaves room for rumour and worry to spread, and just fuels any potential stress and panic.

wellididntseethatcoming · 06/02/2020 22:35

There's a population in Hubei of 58.5 million. For reference.
Has anybody seen any estimations as to what the real figures most likely are?
