So this virus has infected 600+ already and seems to be picking up pace. It’ll be in the UK any day, if it’s not already. AIBU to think this is going to have a big fallout and are you concerned?

For China: 31k confirmed cases, 26k suspected.

woodchuck99 · 07/02/2020 09:05

The new UK patient is understood to be a middle-aged man who was isolated at home, tested positive and was taken to St Thomas's Hospital in central London"

I thought that he went to A&E. You wouldn't do that unless you are feeling pretty ill. It is really worrying that he did do that as he could have infected a lot of people.

SapatSea · 07/02/2020 09:25

Apparently he walked into A&E in Brighton on Sunday (according to local paper). He was at a conference in Singapore where at least one other delgate has also caught the virus. His family are self isolating.

The advice should be clear if you think you might have the virus, phone the NHS, don't go walking into A&E or your local GP's.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/02/2020 09:42

Sounds grim on Diamond Princess, stuck in Yokohma port as well ... according to the New York Times, the original 1 case has become over 60

yolofish · 07/02/2020 09:42

Just read (BBC?) that a nine month old baby has it after he and his mother returned from China to NI. Not sure whether the mother has or not.

I thought that was the advice with any infection really. If I thought I had flu or another infection the last thing I would do is walk into a clinic and potentially infect other people.

It's really made me notice things more. I went to the surgery this morning for monthly routine bloods due to being on some seriously immune suppressing drugs for autoimmune conditions and the sheer amount of really awful behaviour really struck me. People checking in on the screen without using the hand gel, coughing everywhere, blowing noses into tissues then holding the tissue and touching chairs, door handles etc. I've seen the same at work. I've been ill since before Christmas because people behave like this.

Yes I do my best to avoid the GP surgery for this reason. I feel sorry for people that work there. Fortunately the people I work with a good though.

People are grim. The receptionist at our GP refused to check me in the other as you have to use the touch screen, but I refused to touch it as a guy had just sneezed all over it and wiped it with his sleeve

Thankfully the practice manager was there and told her to just do it and went off to find someone to clean the screen. It's around the corner from them so they can't see it so I bet that happens more often than they realise

Bubblemonkey · 07/02/2020 19:39

No more worried than I am about a kidney infection finishing me off. Given my track record, the chances are about 1%

yolofish · 07/02/2020 21:55

everything xd dementedma that he is fine.

5 Brits in France in a ski chalet now confirmed positive - 25 miles from where DD1 is working... in a ski chalet.

They are connected with the man who has it in Brighton.

MissPoldark · 08/02/2020 17:06

Regarding the new cases in France..,
From what I can gather, the French authorities seem to have tested the family visited by the Brighton man straight away and taken them to hospital as a precaution.
In comparison, the U.K. seems to be taking a “watch and wait” approach, with contacts being asked to self isolate.
So does it seem very likely that there will be more cases linked to this in the U.K?

On the one hand we seem to be taking a worryingly relaxed approach (unless we’re just not sharing as much detail about contact tracing as other countries).
On the other, hospitalising asymptomatic people as a precaution is surely not sustainable.

WhoWants2Know · 08/02/2020 23:20

I don't like the idea of residential buildings being welded shut, like in some of the videos I've seen.

I don't really understand how it helps. If anyone trapped in the building is infected then it will just spread to everyone. If there's a fire, it's a death sentence.

ImTheCaddy · 08/02/2020 23:25

The Middle Aged man from Brighton is British. Seemingly he was at a conference in Singapore from 20-23rd Jan. Then in France at a ski chalet from the the 24th for a few days.

He became ill, called 111 and they sent him to A&E where where they isolated him straight away and he was transferred to London.

His son is at a local school and is also in isolation. Apparently the family have left the area now.

They have tested people at a local pub where the man and his family has also been.

woodchuck99 · 09/02/2020 10:47

The Brighton man has also infected someone who is now in Majorca. He seems to have infected a lot of people!

A journalist from the sun saying that he has heard a nursing home in Brighton has been closed as one of the diagnosed health care workers worked there. That would be a disaster.

How do you "close" a nursing home? Where will the people go?

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 19:46

My thoughts exactly. Can't exactly move them anywhere can you. Possibly not even true. The journalist works for the sun but I can't see anyone else talking about it.

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/02/2020 19:46

How do you "close" a nursing home? Where will the people go?*

Or maybe they mean close it off as in quarantine it?

yolofish · 10/02/2020 22:05

@dementedma do you have any news of your brother?

percheron67 · 04/03/2020 10:19

Is there any info about public libraries and if it is safe to handle books if an outbreak has happened in your area?
