So this virus has infected 600+ already and seems to be picking up pace. It’ll be in the UK any day, if it’s not already. AIBU to think this is going to have a big fallout and are you concerned?

@iswhois Agreed

jasjas1973 · 31/01/2020 16:29

In my opinion it's time for the UN to sanction the Chinese govt for allowing a trade which keeps causing issues with global health

I take your point BUT China has a UN veto and would block any such proposed action.

Should Corona take hold in the USA, wonder what Trump will do.

iswhois · 31/01/2020 17:15

Indeed @jasjas1973

He will probably threaten nuclear war over Twitter again!

“A 2% death rate is 1 in 50. In a disease we have no immunisation for that's huge. That is all the people who usually DON'T die of flu because we give them the flu jab. It's my 90 year old gran. It's my neighbour on chemo. It might even be my family member with hypothyroidism. It's every single person in the UK knowing someone who dies of it.”

A very sobering and very well put point. Thank you.

I also agree with you about Swine flu.

Mojaverattles · 31/01/2020 17:27

So has anyone got the symptoms?

It must be more widespread than we think.

I'm actually terrified now. Have a bad cough and a runny nose. Had diarrhoea yesterday and still have a dodgy stomach . My 4 year has also caught it. We live in London and I'm thinking of not going in to work tomorrow as I may spread the virus. I must have given my illness to others as I've been on public transport all week.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/01/2020 17:30

The media loves a hyperbole

Ain't that the truth Angry

I'm reminded of being stuck in Bangkok during the April 2010 ash cloud thing - apparently the skies "were going to be closed until June" (they were open within 6 days), and Sarasota during Hurricane Irma where "Florida would be uninhabitable for 6 months" - and this in a big retirement state where seniors may well have believed this and been worried sick

What we need is responsible and accurate reporting, but there's little chance of getting it from the mainstream media

EpicIndividual · 31/01/2020 17:33

I think it’s important to remember that we only have a % death/infection rate calculated on the figures provided/known by china so far. There appears to be a lot of other info (some of which of course may well be fake too) leaking out that seems to conflict widely with the formal updates they are giving.

purplepjamas · 31/01/2020 17:52

I live near York and so perhaps have come into contact with people who have been in contact with the confirmed cases??

I have a cold. Temperature. Sneezes. It's highly unlikely to be connected and I'm not panicking. But how would we know if we had it?

I also work in a school. I think there must be several hundreds who could potentially be infected as we speak but it's a matter of wait and see for how poorly it will make you.

I also think the Chinese government are playing this down big time! You don't close all those cities for nothing.

But even if this thing is apocalyptic and like the Spanish flu etc etc the world leaders are hardly likely to tell us now are they? It would just cause absolute chaos.

SirChing · 31/01/2020 18:21

I am now at the point where I think all plane travel from China should be stopped aside from government repatriation flights.

It's pointless taking people from those flights into quarantine, if people from other areas of China which have outbreaks are allowed to fly here without restriction.

Quartz2208 · 31/01/2020 18:39

This is interesting

www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/world/asia/china-coronavirus-contain.html

as to where it stands in terms of mortality rate and infection rate.

PowerslidePanda · 31/01/2020 20:48

I agree.

And to the people who are concerned about their runny noses - only 4 out of the 99 cases had that as a symptom. It's far, far more likely that you simply have a cold.

PowerslidePanda · 31/01/2020 20:49

Sorry - first 99 cases

NeurotrashWarrior · 31/01/2020 20:56

I'm a little worried now.

Elderly parents who live not far from the hotel in York. I worry for them.

The virus sounds like exactly the type of virus that floors me regarding asthma. My eldest son also has asthma and I have a toddler. I work in an SEN school. If it gets going I will be nervous, of complications for my parents and of the actual illness for us.

Having said that I know I'll get a shit if a virus every winter that fucks up asthma. It's better to not know when what etc though!

Rowgtfc72 · 31/01/2020 21:45

Turns out the York people were first taken to Castle Hill hospital in Hull. That's our local cancer centre. Our local paper is scaremongering at the minute!

MissPoldark · 31/01/2020 21:58

Where did you read that? That wouldn’t make any sense at all Confused

Rowgtfc72 · 31/01/2020 22:08

It's in my local paper and confirmed by someone who works there.
Makes no sense at all.

NaturalBornWoman · 31/01/2020 22:09

Just said on the news they took them to Hull first.

NaturalBornWoman · 31/01/2020 22:15

US just closed borders to anyone coming from China other than their own nationals who have to quarantine. They have a few patients there now and clearly not liking what they see.

NeurotrashWarrior · 01/02/2020 05:48

I think they went to hull for specialist tests then transferred up to Newcastle where there's a specialist isolation treatment centre.

BusterGonad · 03/02/2020 08:21

I am worried now as my country has 7 suspected cases, no decent health care and I'm skint so if I get ill I'm not sure how I'll afford it treatment, I also have crohn's so worry that I'm more vulnerable to it. I canceled a trip out at the weekend, because I'm feeling poorly anyway and didn't fancy the venue (arcade) as too many dirty surfaces and massive massive lack of hand washing, using tissues for sneezing and locals coughing up crap all day long into bins etc. Urgh. Sometimes I wonder why the fuck I'm living here.

ofwarren · 03/02/2020 08:45

Which country is that Buster?

woodchuck99 · 03/02/2020 09:11

Regarding the two people with coronavirus, I'm not sure they were in York for that long and wonder if they had been somewhere else in the UK first. They only checked into the hotel on the morning before the parent had symptoms. The student apparently hadn't been on campus after being exposed to the virus and hadn't been to the Chinese New Year celebrations a few days before. It's suggests to me that they were somewhere else before York and the authorities don't want to tell people where.

MyuMe · 03/02/2020 09:12

Where are all the masks from?!
Make sure you get these.

Everything is made in China

Coronavirus are you worried?
BusterGonad · 03/02/2020 09:14

I'm in myanmar!!! There's no hope for me!!!!!! It'll be like the zombie apocalypse if it hits!!! 😂

BusterGonad · 03/02/2020 09:18

I don't usually worry about these things, but since being diagnosed with crohn's and having no spare cash at the moment it's got me a bit worried.
