What time does school start?

I'm clueless about some stuff. Where I come from school started at 9 am. Is it not the same here??

I was at a shop this morning, late for work but on the way in had to stop for milk for the office. There was this dreadful harridan shrieking around the shop for "annie" who apparently kept wandering off. I had to wait for this woman to shout a few times, not looking about the child and then ask her if I could get by to get to the milk. (a concept she completely ignored). A minute late I was in the queue with several others when she comes up, still shouting for Annie who's running about the place, and dumps all her shopping at a closed till and then goes off again. Eventually I'm served and just as I'm turning away and the next chap is being served she arrives at the closed till, blocks my way and starts shouting at the guy serving as to why has he served others, why isn't her shopping totted up, why is he ignoring her and being rude???!

Of course being me I can't resist and turn and say "well you weren't here, you're shopping is at a closed till and there's others already in the queue so why not wait your turn?" She continued to shriek about how poor annie was now going to be late for school and how she was in such a hurry (having finally found her red bull?)

So given that this was already 9:15 and that the school was not next door I had to wonder when poor Annie was expected anywhere to get her education (which obviously she needs as she wasn't about to get too many valuable lessons from her parent).

Depends on the school. Most are between 8.40 and 8.50 in our county. There are a couple that start at 8.30 but it's not common.

BlueEyedFloozy · 21/01/2020 22:01

Our schools vary (NE Scotland) between 8.45am and 9.30am.

VivaDixie · 21/01/2020 22:01

Do you not have something rather fascinating to listen to on Radio 4? Hmm

Think no more of it and continue with your life. The 'harridan' and Annie will get along just fine without your scorn and indignation.

BlueEyedFloozy · 21/01/2020 22:02

Also - you said yourself you were late for work so I don't think you're in any position to judge anyway 🤔

Mammyloveswine · 21/01/2020 22:03

8.30 at my children's school..8.45 the school I teach at.

Lipperfromchipper · 21/01/2020 22:03

Schools in Ireland can vary from 8.40 to 9.30 🤷‍♀️

y0rkier0se · 21/01/2020 22:05

8.20 start for us, 3pm finish

angelikacpickles · 21/01/2020 22:06

I'm in Ireland and our school is 8.30.

Lipperfromchipper · 21/01/2020 22:07

Sorry yes I meant 8.30 -9.30 🤣 @angelikacpickles

lauryloo · 21/01/2020 22:07

My little boy's school starts at 9.15

beethebee · 21/01/2020 22:08

Don't really see the point of the judgy story OP but I had no idea about school start time either.

We're not in UK- here DS has to be at school between 7.15 and 7.45. Classes start at 8.

Brokenlightfitting · 21/01/2020 22:08

Where do you come from?

Condescension Island?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/01/2020 22:10

Primary started at 8.55.
Secondary starts at 8.25.
Not sure how that helps you though op.

Sh05 · 21/01/2020 22:11

Boys high school starts at 8 near us. They finish at 3 then have Friday early finish at 12.
My daughter's school starts at 8:30
And the nearest primary starts 8:50

PenguinsOnParade · 21/01/2020 22:12

My part of NE Scotland is 9am at primary and 8.55am for secondary. Nursery times are different and changed since mine went so I don't know them now.

SparkyBlue · 21/01/2020 22:18

In in Ireland and in my local area my school starts at 8.30 and the other local school starts at 9.00. My friend lives in the countryside and their school starts at 9.30.

Ohyesiam · 21/01/2020 22:21

8.40
Hope that helps

formerbabe · 21/01/2020 22:21

That's a big judgement you've made... perhaps they had a morning doctors appointment before school starts?

SmudgeButt · 21/01/2020 22:23

Ok for those who think I'm judgey - hmm well yes perhaps but more sorry for poor annie who has such a nasty example for a role model and will probably end up the same due to a def lack of education. sorry if you think that's condescending.

as for me, yes I was late by normal standards in that work often starts at 9 but I don't generally as I'm lucky to flex things. And no I don't normally listen to radio 4 being a more rock music sort of person. But thanks to those who agreed that the little tyke should have been at school by then - that's really what I wanted to know.

Ok then[Hmm

MrsStrangerThing · 21/01/2020 22:26

What in the world is a harridan??

formerbabe · 21/01/2020 22:27

You sound easily shocked op.

I'm going to guess you're not used to doing the school run? This would barely raise an eyebrow to be honest

formerbabe · 21/01/2020 22:28

What in the world is a harridan?

In this context I'm guessing common

sanityisamyth · 21/01/2020 22:28

School opens at 7.30 for breakfast club until 8.55. School starts at 8.55. Ends at 3.30.

JasonPollack · 21/01/2020 22:32

Easily shocked? She sounds a few sandwiches short if you ask me. What. Weird thread.
