What time does school start?

I'm clueless about some stuff. Where I come from school started at 9 am. Is it not the same here??

I was at a shop this morning, late for work but on the way in had to stop for milk for the office. There was this dreadful harridan shrieking around the shop for "annie" who apparently kept wandering off. I had to wait for this woman to shout a few times, not looking about the child and then ask her if I could get by to get to the milk. (a concept she completely ignored). A minute late I was in the queue with several others when she comes up, still shouting for Annie who's running about the place, and dumps all her shopping at a closed till and then goes off again. Eventually I'm served and just as I'm turning away and the next chap is being served she arrives at the closed till, blocks my way and starts shouting at the guy serving as to why has he served others, why isn't her shopping totted up, why is he ignoring her and being rude???!

Of course being me I can't resist and turn and say "well you weren't here, you're shopping is at a closed till and there's others already in the queue so why not wait your turn?" She continued to shriek about how poor annie was now going to be late for school and how she was in such a hurry (having finally found her red bull?)

So given that this was already 9:15 and that the school was not next door I had to wonder when poor Annie was expected anywhere to get her education (which obviously she needs as she wasn't about to get too many valuable lessons from her parent).

The irony of judging someone who may be late when you are late yourself Hmm

You sound like a delight😂

FlamingoAndJohn · 21/01/2020 22:50

You are suggesting that this child will end up as a harridan due to a lack of education, yet you seem to struggle with capital letters.

Isithometimeyet0987 · 21/01/2020 22:53

My DDs school starts at 9:20 and ends at 3:10.

MyLamaDontLikeYou · 21/01/2020 23:09

My DS (primary school) starts at 9.10am and finishes at 3.10pm.

Not quite sure who agreed with you OP...

People are so judgemental! I bring mine to school at 9.15 despite school starting at 8.45.. this was the schools suggestion, as dd has asd a struggles with the busy school run so it’s better for her to come in slightly later when it’s not so hectic. Didn’t realise strangers would be judging me.

Poor Woman and annie were having a bad day. Why not just ask if schools vary in starting times?

There is a secondary school near us that finishes at 2.00pm.
Think they're in at 8.30.

LemonPrism · 21/01/2020 23:48

We had to be inside for form at 8.15am. This was 2006-13 in England.

@formerbabe

and others...

Dictionary explanation of harridan is "an unpleasant woman, especially an older one, who is often angry and often tells other people what to do". So not common necessarily - it's a description frankly that people might use for my mother. And given some of the less pleasant comments on this thread possibly some might think it applies to me at times.

Frankly the whole episode was unpleasant as the woman was so very aggressive. And yes she may have been having a bad day. But given that Annie might not get to school until close to 10 am it did make me wonder & worry. Sometimes I find that telling a tale in full helps me unload it. And for those who wondered yes - frankly the school run is quite literally a foreign concept to me.

Well obviously the Annie was going to be late for school unless she attends nursery which sometimes starts later. The mum of Annie does sound annoying and rude yes but I wouldn't dwell on it.

CripsSandwiches · 25/01/2020 14:38

I think it's fairly unlikely she's normally a pleasant person but is just having a bad day to be honest but there's nothing you can do about it. The school will obviously notice if a child is constantly late and will act on it with the parent(s) in question.
