To ask about the cost of your car

salviapurplerain · 21/01/2020 18:32

Posting here for traffic. Basically I'm looking to buy a car on finance and wondering how much other people pay. I know everyone's circumstances are different but still curious. So aibu to ask what car you have and how much you pay for it on a monthly basis?

Just bought a new car - paid for it in cash from savings. Bit of a pointless question, depends on the car, interest rate, type of finance etc etc.

ClutterbuckFarm · 21/01/2020 18:35

We are leasing a Volvo SUV for £579 a month. 3 year deal, 8000 miles a year.

ClutterbuckFarm · 21/01/2020 18:37

Forgot to add, we found leasing was cheaper than PCP which works for us as we only intend to keep the car for 3 years.

Charliebigpotatoes · 21/01/2020 18:37

We have a 2009 Toyota Yaris that we pay about £80 a month for.

blazerbranch · 21/01/2020 18:38

Got a new golf in March 17. £160 a month plus 4K deposit on PCP. That was with a huge discount off the list price. Due to come to end of finance agreement. This time I am looking to lease as don't have the same deposit.

hazell42 · 21/01/2020 18:45

I paid 640 quid for my car. it had a 12 month MOT
Outright purchase
I paid 30 quid for a years tax
All in all 1000 pounds with insurance
I give no fucks about cars and would never spend 100s of pounds a month leasing one
Probably not the sort of poster you were looking for though, so I'll slink off now

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 21/01/2020 18:51

67 plate Mercedes A-Class, 2.5ltr (I think) top sports spec, body kit etc (was what dh wanted, I just wanted boot space for pushchair and 5 doors) paid £25,500 for it, Inc paint, wheel and tyre protection.
Deposit was £2k and repayments and £302 a month. Affordable, but has meant while I've been on mat leave, we've not has as much spare money.

jakeyboy1 · 21/01/2020 18:51

I currently pay £300 a month PCP on a Mercedes but I put a large deposit down. I am now due to change and have little deposit and it's going to be £400-500 a month. I have been to BMW/Audi/Volkswagen/Mercedes, the deals are changing all the time. The VW was actually the most expensive due to lower residual. I am still undecided but am now going through leaseplan for either a BMW or Mercedes as they are cheaper than the dealer at present. Shop around.

GoodnightJude1 · 21/01/2020 18:54

We lease a Kia Sorento (3 year lease) because we like being able to give it back and get something new after 3 years. Costs us about £330 a month (ish) OH sorts that kind of stuff!

almostfreeatlast · 21/01/2020 18:55

We’ve got a golf and pay £340 for it.

Interesting thread as we will probably change the car in the next couple of weeks.

almostfreeatlast · 21/01/2020 18:55

Years not weeks*

I wish!

user1497207191 · 21/01/2020 18:57

I pay nothing, other than tax, an annual service and insurance. I drive a 12 year old Citroen C3 which I bought new back in 2008. Still looks good as new, barely a scratch and drives as well as it did a decade ago. I really couldn't bring myself to constantly "need" a nearly new car and pay hundreds of pounds per month for the priviledge - just money down the drain for the sake of vanity.

canyon2000 · 21/01/2020 18:58

I have a 17 reg Golf GTi on lease from VW and pay £165 a month and £1200 up front.

MadameJosephine · 21/01/2020 19:07

I lease a BMWi3 via a salary sacrifice scheme. I sacrifice £4.5k of my salary which at the moment it means about £320 off my net salary each month but that will reduce to about £220 when electric cars become exempt from company car tax again in April

Alarae · 21/01/2020 19:08

Recently bought a 15 plate Honda Civic for 6.8k as the family car to replace my DH's 04 Audi A3, which he bought outright for 5k around seven years ago.

Second car is my 59 Fiat 500, which cost me 7k six years ago.

We didn't want a monthly payment so bought outright, partly funded by a 0% credit card which will be paid off within six months of purchase.

Not having the extra payment is important as when I go back to work after Mat leave, our disposable income will go right down as we will pay childcare and also restart payments to FIL (borrowed house deposit).

salviapurplerain · 21/01/2020 19:13

Thanks everyone for your contributions. jakeyboy that's an interesting find. I've been looking around and starting to feel like all similar sized cars pretty much cost the same regardless of brand! That's obviously taking away the very luxurious ones like Porsche etc. So confusing!

susiegrapevine · 21/01/2020 19:13

Main car cost £2500 Vauxhall zafria 55 plate had that 2 years now. 2nd car cost £900 52 plate Vauxhall Corsa only had that about 6 months as didn't need a 2nd car till about 6 months ago. They are both low mileage and good cars so no monthly cost apart from the insurance on the big car

Flymetothetoon · 21/01/2020 19:20

I have a 22 year old Nissan Micra bought for 200 quid , appears to run on thin air and starts first click even if it's not been used for a couple of weeks. I really don't understand folks who tie themselves up with expensive finance and fancy cars!

lastqueenofscotland · 21/01/2020 19:23

Golf GTI pay £150 a month for it on HCP
Absolutely love it.

Herts6789 · 21/01/2020 19:26

Ford fiesta, (good spec i think) £250/month no deposit, 0% apr, 3 years 9000miles per year.

almostfreeatlast · 21/01/2020 19:26

@Flymetothetoon some people just like having a ‘nice’ car and are happy to devote a portion of their income to that.

Fidgety31 · 21/01/2020 19:26

I bought a 3 yr one vehicle via bank loan. Cash price was £17k
Could pay cash and will never do a PCP again so went back to loans

MondeoFan · 21/01/2020 19:27

I have an old Ford it's 19 years old now to be exact. Paid £500 for it and been driving it 5 years now with no problems.
Wouldn't catch me spending £250-£300 month leasing a car.
If I did this we'd never be able to go on holiday

jaggynettle · 21/01/2020 19:27

I have a Citroen DS3 had it for about three years. It's a 12 plate and I pay £135 a month for it but will be handing it back shortly for a newer model. Nothing wrong with it - just fancy some mod cons!

Notacluedoyou · 21/01/2020 19:27

Kia Sportage (good spec sat nav, 360 camera etc) pay £245p/m on 3yr lease inc maintenance package which covers services, tyres, windows etc... 👍🏻
