To ask about the cost of your car

Posting here for traffic. Basically I'm looking to buy a car on finance and wondering how much other people pay. I know everyone's circumstances are different but still curious. So aibu to ask what car you have and how much you pay for it on a monthly basis?

We did lease on our last car then decided to buy second hand with a loan over same length of time as the lease was previously, so that we had an asset if we needed to sell or change. Which has worked out very well as I have a surprise pregnancy so will need to upgrade to a larger car in the next 18 months or so.
Highly recommend Kia as well, 7 year warranty available. Service plans that fit to your circumstances and affordable so that regular maintenance is easy. (I know I sound like I work for them, I don't I just love them and owned for over 15 years).

Also recommend Lings Lease. Hilarious website, but clear about cars and options.

3y ago I got a brand new evoque to lease. £900 deposit, £370 a year with 8k miles a year.
No services or mot etc to pay. Only ever paid for fuel.
£370 a year is a REALLY good deal Grin

mindutopia · 21/01/2020 20:45

I bought a roughly 7 year old Volvo a few years ago. £6500 cash, though I part exchanged my old car so paid less than that (can’t actually remember now). It will run at least another 100k miles. No payments. We could afford newer cars, as we have high salaries, but just don’t see the point. I’d rather have a nicer house, more holidays, more savings.

bridgetreilly · 21/01/2020 21:01

@Hingeandbracket I was just going to say that! If PCP was £370/year I could understand why people do it.

People do know that new cars don't have to have MOTs however you purchase them, right? That's not a special benefit for PCP owners.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 21/01/2020 21:06

I have a 68 plate Hyundai i20 that I've had from new and I pay £243 a month. I like having a new car as it means I've got a decent warranty and no MOT to worry about

forgivemeimnew · 21/01/2020 21:11

I have a Clio on a personal loan. Pay £250/month. Was 9 months old with 1700 miles when I got it, I will love it and keep it forever though. Only changed my last Clio to get an automatic, had that one 9 years from new.

LoopyLu2019 · 21/01/2020 21:14

£273 pcm no deposit for a Volvo V90cc 18 months. Compromise is it's petrol with a mid level engine, which makes it have a hidden fuel cost. But I love it. Don't want to give it back but will probably get an E class then a tesla.

Watch out for lease deals, a good deal can have hidden costs a bit like mine (but work cover it so I'm not fussed) things like range rover evokes, you get a "Good" price but normally poor spec. And inefficient mileage that reduces value for money and increases costs like fuel.

Sleepyquest · 21/01/2020 21:15

We pay £230 for a Mini with some extras and £1000 deposit

luanmapo · 21/01/2020 21:16

2018 BMW 7 seater
Shopped around and actually PCP ended up cheaper than lease (considered both as change every 3 years)
Dealer slashed £12k off the price (top spec one with £4K extras) was 50/50 split reduction between bmw finance and the dealer.
£1200 deposit and £460 pcp 10k miles per annum.
We have had BMW for years and have never had to replace anything other than tyres and brakes.
Depends what car you want, but shop around for sure and play dealers/leasing companies off against one another.
For us, this was cheaper than a ford or Vauxhall so no brainier, so that’s why you see so many more premium brands cars on the road.... they’re much more affordable nowadays.
Our other car is a knackered old 58plate Renault for taking dogs out everywhere, it goes through the MOT every year without fail and only needing basic works done. Our son will have it this year for his car once he is 17, but it’s done us proud.
So I can speak on behalf of owning and financing. Both works for our family circumstances.

speakout · 21/01/2020 21:18

I bought my car 4 years ago- paid cash- £900.

I prefer to spend my money on other things.

Sleepyquest · 21/01/2020 21:19

@BrickTop999 I just had to google your car colour as I was intrigued. WOW I am in love. Never seen that car before!

mollibu · 21/01/2020 21:21

Got a brand new VW Tiguan on lease delivered last week.

£269 per month including servicing, maintenance and tyres. Came with all the extras like reversing speed camera, park assist etc etc. £800 deposit, 4 years, 8,000 per year Smile

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/01/2020 21:22

@RougeVinEtFromage
Is it a motability car?

Bluedogyellowcat · 21/01/2020 21:31

£285 a month for a decent spec Q3 on lease. Makes sense to us

RougeVinEtFromage · 21/01/2020 21:32

Nope, not a mobility car or bollocks...brownie promise.

salviapurplerain · 21/01/2020 21:33

@mollibu may I ask which website you used please? Tiguan is on our list. Tia

Not sure I'll ever be able to bring myself to pay monthly for a car, I paid 2250 cash 2 years ago for my now 16 year old 3 series. Not sure what I'll do when it gives up. Potentially buy on a 0% credit card if I'm desperate but more likely to get a 500 quid banger and run it into the ground like the rest of my cars BlushGrin

RougeVinEtFromage · 21/01/2020 21:34

Nope, not a mobility car or bollocks...brownie promise.

www.selectcarleasing.co.uk/car-leasing/land-rover/range-rover-evoque/suv/20-d150-r-dynamic-5dr-2wd/

Simple google search found that.

Please show us all where you are getting this wonderful deal

lauryloo · 21/01/2020 21:36

I've got a skoda fabia on a pcp deal. It's 169 a month. I love it

salviapurplerain · 21/01/2020 21:37

@cannotmakemymindup I just looked up lings and blimey, I wouldn't have trusted it if it popped up any other way lol! Have you actually used it to get a car before or just for reference? This leasing idea is interesting. I'd never considered it before but to be fair I do change my cars when the pcp runs out so doesn't sound like I will be losing out from not having the option to purchase. Thanks to everyone who has brought this to my attention 😊

RougeVinEtFromage · 21/01/2020 21:38

Hahahahaha a month. Obviously it wasn't a year though...

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 21/01/2020 21:38

Car 1: 13 yr old non premium marque. purchased with cash 6 years ago.
Car 2 : 3 year old non premium marque purchased with cash 2 years ago.

We will run both into the ground before replacing.

cannotmakemymindup · 21/01/2020 21:44

@salviapurplerain I genuinely have used them twice for my very first lease 14 years ago and then about 4 years ago. She's based up north but they deliver to you. She's more a broker but great deals. When my last car turned up with lots of bugs stuck to it, she sorted out cheque from company to get the car valeted back to new standard as the bugs were very stuck on! Ling normally include car tax as well over length of lease. So great bargain. You can ring and talk to them as well if you have questions.
