Trying to eat more veg. Been buying mainly frozen veg as I find there’s less wastage and it’s quick and easy to add veg to meals when we have limited time.

A couple times mil has come over (right on dinner time as always) and makes comments about how oh should go over there for some ‘proper veg’ and frozen veg is unhealthy and lazy because I don’t ‘prep’ it.

Aibu to think these comments are rude and unnecessary!

frozen tends to be mushier but from a nutrition viewpoint it can actually be healthier.

araiwa · 21/01/2020 16:26

Frozen veg is fine

JoJoSM2 · 21/01/2020 16:26

Very rude. And frozen veg is healthy.

Yadaaday · 21/01/2020 16:27

Nothing wrong with frozen. Do what you like, nothing to do with her!

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 21/01/2020 16:28

I've read that frozen veg is better as it's frozen at the point of picking so is fresher and has more nutrients than 'fresh', which actually is older and deteriorating.

RB68 · 21/01/2020 16:29

frozen today is way better than even 10 yrs ago so I think traditionally it has been the view that its "no good" but its fine - and far better than no veg

DramaAlpaca · 21/01/2020 16:30

Nothing wrong with frozen vegetables.

Is your MIL rude about other things? If you can't shut her down yourself, get your DH to have a word.

TheReef · 21/01/2020 16:31

I was always told frozen veg is healthier as it keeps more of its vitamins etc due to freezing after being picked rather than spending time being transported places

ChasingRainbows19 · 21/01/2020 16:32

Some texture may change In some veggies.
but nutritionally still good for you so you carry on!

Pop2017 · 21/01/2020 16:32

She can be quite judgemental @DramaAlpaca 😟

Individually frozen vegetable are great but I would generally stay away from the mixed veg. I use a mix of fresh and frozen vegetables, it's so easy to throw in a handful of peas or sweetcorn (or both!) into a stir fry of fresh carrots, onions, courgettes etc. There's no waste and there's always something in the freezer to add to homemade soups etc

gamerwidow · 21/01/2020 16:34

It’s fine from a nutritional point of view but it can be a bit mushy depending of what it is. Cabbage for example I dont think freezes well but peas are ok.

Zilla1 · 21/01/2020 16:34

Does your MiL only eat fresh peas and sweetcorn? You should congratulate her on her fashionably seasonal and air-mile friendly beliefs, though most negative opinions might be better kept to herself.

I serve frozen peas, sweetcorn, sprouts and tinned pulses (not strictly vegetables, I know).

RandomWok · 21/01/2020 16:37

Frozen veg is fine. The quicker it is frozen the more nutritional value it has, hence the birds eye from field to frozen campaign they had a few years ago. Your MIL is just being difficult. If the veg is frozen in good time then it will have more "good stuff" in it than fresh that has sat about for days in supermarkets.

illjuststickabroomupmyarse · 21/01/2020 16:42

I bet she puts bicarb in the water when cooking as well! My mum is a bit funny about frozen veg but as I cook and so the shopping it's tough.
Frozen veg means less waste and more vitamins.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 21/01/2020 16:43

Frozen veg is fine, in some cases is even likely to be more nutritious than fresh as the veg destined for the freezer ailse gets frozen more quickly than the fresh can hit the shelves.

Texture may or may not be to people's taste but that's by the by in terms of nutritional value.

Theflying19 · 21/01/2020 16:46

I have been known to use people's reactions to tinned carrots as a judge of character... It flushes out the Margo Ledbetters and Hyacinth Buckets. 😁

auntlydiassteelyarmpithair · 21/01/2020 16:55

I am a massive fan of frozen veg, but only certain types for certain things. I adore frozen onions and celery and carrots for soup and sauces bases, I use leek for soup, I add plenty of butternut squash and sweet ptotato to currys and casseroles etc. I use frozen mixed veg to pack out a shepherds pie. But if its to be eaten as an actual side I will only really eat petit pois with butter/mint and corn on the cob. I find everything else is just too wet and soggy as a side so would always go for fresh carrots, brocoli, cauli and sprouts etc.

LilQueenie · 21/01/2020 16:55

its better than the fresh produce in packets. that stuff has chemical all over it.

Newbie1999 · 21/01/2020 16:56

It’s still healthy but I don’t like it. Too soft when cooked even a little.

DontCallMeBaby · 21/01/2020 17:06

Frozen peas are the best peas you’re ever going to get unless you grow your own. And frozen butternut squash if find is an excellent way to avoid slicing my fingers off.

pointythings · 21/01/2020 17:10

Frozen veg is often more nutritious than fresh as detailed above. You have to work out for yourself which frozen veg you like texture wise - I use sweetcorn, peas, carrots and broad beans, but some things do get really mushy. Broccoli is dreadful frozen, really only any use if you are making soup.

Feminazgul · 21/01/2020 17:15

Frozen veg means less waste

Cloudyyy · 21/01/2020 17:15

Is it because it’s often boiled if frozen? I thought veg lost a lot of its nutritional value after being boiled.

TinkysWinky · 21/01/2020 17:17

We use a lot of frozen veg - saves a lot of waste here. I dont like mushy textures so I am just selective about what we buy - peas, sweetcorn, green beans, peppers, mushrooms, leeks, onions, garlic, ginger - all fine. Broccoli, cauliflower and carrots we have fresh as I find the textures mushy when done from frozen.
