Trying to eat more veg. Been buying mainly frozen veg as I find there’s less wastage and it’s quick and easy to add veg to meals when we have limited time.

A couple times mil has come over (right on dinner time as always) and makes comments about how oh should go over there for some ‘proper veg’ and frozen veg is unhealthy and lazy because I don’t ‘prep’ it.

Aibu to think these comments are rude and unnecessary!

I believe that frozen veg is all ok, I have only ever had frozen peas though, but frozen is deemed perfectly ok by some tv cooks and so called experts.

TinkysWinky · 21/01/2020 17:23

No its because freezing causes the water inside the veg to swell - depends on the structure and size of crystals formed it can cause some of the structure in certain veg to break down - so if you froze a carrot and defrosted it it would be a softer bendy texture without ever having cooked it - because freezing causes large ice crystals inside.

Interestingly you blanched a carrot first and then froze and thawed it it wouldnt be so mushy, as you have partially cooked it smaller ice crystals would then form and not cause as much destruction

Frozen veg can be healthier. However if it is boiled to death then the nutrients go. I think steaming or microwave is the best way to avoid this.

IntermittentParps · 21/01/2020 17:30

If she doesn't want frozen veg she is welcome not to invite herself over at dinnertime.
Next comment about health or laziness, show her the door. Rude bitch.

stripeypillowcase · 21/01/2020 17:30

frozen veg are great.
especially peas and sweetcorn. and berries. can't beat frozen mixed berries with chocolate sauce in yoghurt.

other frozen veg might be better off in soup due to texture changes though.

nutritionally frozen beats fresh almost always, unless you pull it out of your garden yourself.

cantfindname · 21/01/2020 17:33

Frozen veg is fine. The only thing I dislike and refuse to buy/eat are frozen carrots which are like bouncy chunks of orange rubber. I use frozen about 75% of the time but buy fresh when it's for a specific dish that depends on the flavour and appearance.

Kelsoooo · 21/01/2020 17:34

Frozen veg the way to go.

Peas
Brocolli
Garlic/onion (soooo easy)
Stir fry veg
Peppers

All used often here.

Straycatstrut · 21/01/2020 17:38

I don't like it because like others said it just seems to go mushy when defrosted/cooked.

I buy a mix of tinned and fresh.

sueelleker · 21/01/2020 17:40

Unless you're growing and picking your own veg, frozen is much more likely to keep its nutrients. By the time vegetables have been picked, transported and sold, they could be anything up to a week old. Frozen ones are frozen immediately after picking.

BertieBotts · 21/01/2020 17:41

I like the Bird's Eye Steam bags. Those don't go mushy, I actually like them better than fresh veg and no prep - win win.

MIL will probably have conniptions because it's microwaved :o

Mrsjayy · 21/01/2020 17:43

Veg would go to waste in my house because of various nonsensical fussiness of my family Hmm so ive always usedfrozen which you can steam just for longer than fresh , none of my veg is mushy we are not keen on frozen broccoli though.

DowntonCrabby · 21/01/2020 17:51

It’s totally fine! We regularly use and love frozen peas/ sweetcorn/corn on the cob/ leeks/ spinach/ broadbeans/ edamame all frozen.

I wouldn’t use mushrooms or sliced pepper from frozen just as a personal texture preference.

I regularly have carrots left over so slice and freeze them but I imagine sliced frozen from fresh carrots have more nutritional content than my 10 day old theme frozen!

happycamper11 · 21/01/2020 17:52

It doesn't taste as good (unless it's peas) but nutritionally apparently frozen veg is superior

Cobblersandhogwash · 21/01/2020 17:54

Shit her down. Stand up for yourself.

Tell her frozen vegetables is fine nutrition wise and that if someone is so nice as to cook for her, she should show some grace.

Cobblersandhogwash · 21/01/2020 17:55

Shut not shit! You could try shit but I expect you'd like some sort of relationship!

Pipandmum · 21/01/2020 17:55

Frozen veg can be healthier. Veg is frozen quite soon after harvesting whereas 'fresh veg' may be days old and losing nutrients all the while.
Steam it and retain even more!

happycamper11 · 21/01/2020 17:56

I have been known to use people's reactions to tinned carrots as a judge of character... It flushes out the Margo Ledbetters and Hyacinth Buckets. 😁

DD - who was 8 at the time came home from her dads where she had been served a roast dinner cooked by his girlfriend.
'They gave me carrots from A TIN mummy!!!' Still giggle at the outrage and disbelief now 😆

Eckhart · 21/01/2020 17:58

'If you've got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all!' will sort this out.

Frozen veg is great. Quick, easy, nutritious, no waste. Maybe she doesn't like it, but you probably don't like everything she eats either. Be rude to comment, though, wouldn't it.

Mrsjayy · 21/01/2020 17:59

My mum is the same god knows what she has in her freezer because she is so weird about frozen food

Mrsjayy · 21/01/2020 18:00

Tinned carrots are delicious although I suspect it is all the salt and sugar in the brine Grin

CountFosco · 21/01/2020 18:01

We always have various frozen berries (perfect simmered with a splash of water and some maple syrup then served with greek yoghurt and way cheaper and less plastic than fresh), frozen peas, broad beans, french beans, corn on the cob, peppers, avocado (truly awesome). We use tinned beans, tomatoes and sweetcorn and lots of fruit like peaches, pears, mandarins etc. Yum.

Digitalash · 21/01/2020 18:05

Individually frozen vegetable are great but I would generally stay away from the mixed veg. Why? Genuine question, my DD loves frozen mixed veg and I thought it was good because its lots of veg in one bag not taking up all the room in my tiny freezer, is it bad for you if its mixed? Sad

lottiegarbanzo · 21/01/2020 18:05

Sounds like she wants you to suffer as she has done and regards you as 'not a proper housewife' for not doing things the hard way, like she had to (or probably chose to).

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/01/2020 18:07

Sprouts
Green beans
Peas
Sweetcorn
Spinach
Green beans
Tesco mixed veg
Broccolli

All good.

Gliese163 · 21/01/2020 18:08

Tell her she can cook her own dinner if he doesn't like it.
