Trying to eat more veg. Been buying mainly frozen veg as I find there’s less wastage and it’s quick and easy to add veg to meals when we have limited time.

A couple times mil has come over (right on dinner time as always) and makes comments about how oh should go over there for some ‘proper veg’ and frozen veg is unhealthy and lazy because I don’t ‘prep’ it.

Aibu to think these comments are rude and unnecessary!

Frozen veg is fine, and there is no waste. Frozen fruit is great as well for the same reason.

"A couple times mil has come over (right on dinner time as always)"
Then your husband needs to tell her that this is a bad time to come, it's not convenient.

And frozen veg are fine. They're frozen within hours of being harvested and can be better nutritionally than 'fresh' veg that has spent days being transported and sitting on supermarket shelves.

FFSFFSFFS · 21/01/2020 19:34

Its often healthier.

I stir fry mine in a pan with a quick spray of olive oil which stops the sog. DELISH.

Bubblysqueak · 21/01/2020 19:35

I love using frozen
Peas
Sweetcorn
Butternut squash
Sweet potato
Onions
Mixed casserole veg (for soups)

Saves so much waist.

Bananaman123 · 21/01/2020 19:38

For someone withma stoma frozen is actually better and less painful as it cooks down mushier so easier to pass through body. Tell her to gtf

HollowTalk · 21/01/2020 19:41

Just ask her how she'd like it if someone interrupted her meal time and criticised her food.

Gettingmyshittogetheragain · 21/01/2020 19:43

I only do frozen veg. Saves wastage.

I don’t get her issue, surely it’s what you actually cook with it and it’s still vegetables Hmm

TatianaLarina · 21/01/2020 19:47

Frozen veg always feels devitalised. The texture and taste is never the same. The only ones that really work are frozen peas, broad beans and red cabbage.

Chloemol · 21/01/2020 19:49

Frozen veg is actually better as most veg is frozen more or less straight from picking in some cases, in others only a few hours later. Fresh veg isn’t necessarily fresh, it can be days old before it hits the shops and nutrition is lower.

Your mil is wrong

Eckhart · 21/01/2020 19:52

@Bananaman123 You may have just changed my life.

recycledbottle · 21/01/2020 19:52

We are massive fans of frozen because we are a small family so there would be a lot of waste if we always got fresh. We do get fresh carrots but that's only cos carrots are snacks also. My MIL said the same and I got DH to direct her to Google and buzz off.

MintyMabel · 21/01/2020 19:52

Fresh veg deteriorates quickly, frozen veg doesn’t. Unless you are buying it every couple of days, you are better off with frozen. Tell her to bring her own veg if she is that picky.

liverpoolnana · 21/01/2020 19:53

For those of you who find frozen veg goes mushy, try putting them in a dish covered with clingfilm but with no water (very important) and giving it six minutes or so in the microwave depending on the quantity. I wish I'd discovered this method years ago.

LeGrandBleu · 21/01/2020 19:53

You can tell the difference between frozen vegetables and fresh, sorry. Only peas are ok and maybe spinach, anything else I really dislike the taste, especially carrots. I hate when we eat out and I am served frozen vegetables.

RibenaMonsoon · 21/01/2020 19:57

I can't live without my frozen veg. Sometimes if I see fresh on offer in the shop I'll buy a load, chop it and freeze it myself. Usually if its a veg that I can't buy frozen anywhere like courgette. I love courgette for chucking into bolognaise.

I buy frozen
Onions
Mushrooms
Peppers
Peas
Spinach
Kale
Country veg mix
Butternut squash
Green beans
Cauliflower
Broccoli (although I prefer fresh) I find the stalk goes really chewey with frozen brocolli. Does anyone else get that?

It's so easy to just chuck handfuls into the slow cooker.

Plus as previous posters have said, it's usually more fresh than fresh as it's been frozen immediately after picking.

Perhaps next time MIL comments, show her the thread. Or find something like an article online that proves that she's talking bollocks.

Andylion · 21/01/2020 20:01

I use frozen more than fresh as it is just me, and there would to much wastage.
Unless I overcook, things are never mushy, I just have to time it right. I have steamed all these together, baby carrots, mini Brussels sprouts, green beans, cauliflower, broccoli, peas. I add them in that order, leaving 2 or 3 minutes between adding, depending on the veg.

I have also tried steaming butternut squash cubes, but they were mushy, which is fine with squash, but not when mixed in with other veg in the steamer.

PurpleTrilby · 21/01/2020 20:02

Agree with all pps, frozen is usually better. True of fish as well, frozen on the boats so much better than 'fresh'. My ex worked on fishing boats and rarely ate anything else.

TatianaLarina · 21/01/2020 20:05

I really don’t find a problem with wastage of fresh veg. If I have any left over ends that need eating up it all goes in a soup.

CountFosco · 21/01/2020 20:11

Presumably they'd be fine roasted though?

Luckystar777 · 21/01/2020 23:00

my grandad eats frozen, he is now in his mid nineties.

Andylion · 21/01/2020 23:34

"Presumably they'd be fine roasted though?"

That sounds like a great idea. I might try it.
