Frozen veg.. really that bad.

Trying to eat more veg. Been buying mainly frozen veg as I find there’s less wastage and it’s quick and easy to add veg to meals when we have limited time.

A couple times mil has come over (right on dinner time as always) and makes comments about how oh should go over there for some ‘proper veg’ and frozen veg is unhealthy and lazy because I don’t ‘prep’ it.

Aibu to think these comments are rude and unnecessary!

Can you say something like 'probably better not to drop by at dinner time MIL, then you won't have to witness our slovenly ways!'

Does your DH cook, 'properly' or the same way you do?

LucaFritz · 21/01/2020 18:10

Thr only frozen veg i won't tolerate is onions because they are so waterlogged and mushy when you fry them you can never get a good Browning on them but apart from that frozen is healthier than fresh

ioioitsoff · 21/01/2020 18:11

I was told it was better because freezing it so soon after harvesting preserves the nutrients, either way it's nothing to be ashamed of, it's not like you are giving them pot noodles for each meal.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 21/01/2020 18:11

I like frozen veg - apart from carrots, I think they are rubbery so I buy fresh. Frozen is supposed to be better as it is frozen within hours of being picked. Fresh can be stored for weeks before you actually buy it.

You lot must cook frozen too long if it goes mushy! Takes about 10 mins in my steamer.

Missmagpie1 · 21/01/2020 18:12

Frozen steam bags that you bung in the microwave are the way to go! 4 mins and they are ready to eat and they don’t go mushy!

Snowpatrolling · 21/01/2020 18:14

I buy frozen as less wastage and quicker to cook.
I tend to steam immune in a steamer and use the steam water for the gravy or I freeze it for stock/stews, that way I’m getting all the vitamins!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/01/2020 18:15

You don't have to buy the expensive bags of veg, you can just microwave frozen veg in a covered bowl.

coffeeandgin26 · 21/01/2020 18:17

Mushrooms, peppers and onions aside - we only ever use frozen veg. It means I can get it out and chuck it in or with anything without hassle.

Amyspickledlime · 21/01/2020 18:20

The frozen veg in my freezer came from my allotment. So do I win or lose points from your mil? 😄

adaline · 21/01/2020 18:22

We use tons of frozen veg - there's only two of us so the fresh stuff often doesn't keep that long, plus the frozen stuff is cheaper.

It's absolutely fine and tastes good too. Less wastage too as anything you don't use can just be put back.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 21/01/2020 18:23

Frozen veg tends to be frozen within a few hours of being picked so it's packed with nutrients, probably more so than 'fresh' veg which has been stored in a cold warehouse for 3 weeks.

Steam it rather than boiling. Must admit though, I find frozen cauliflower and broccolli go mushy, but everything else is great.

Tell your MIL to do her research properly.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/01/2020 18:24

Oh she sounds a delight.

Mrsjayy · 21/01/2020 18:28

I do oven bakedcauliflower cheese with frozen cauliflower i guarantee it doesn't go mushy

illjuststickabroomupmyarse · 21/01/2020 18:30

I always have frozen broccoli and it's never been mushy- you must be over cooking it,

speakout · 21/01/2020 18:33

I agree with the others- it is nutritious- some of it isn't very good though, the texture can change significantly of most veg.

BlackForestCake · 21/01/2020 18:41

Nothing wrong with frozen veg. Fresh tastes better but frozen is just as healthy, more convenient and cheaper.

I do take the trouble to shell and cook fresh peas occasionally. They really taste better but it is such a faff it makes me appreciate the frozen ones too!

Coldemort · 21/01/2020 18:42

Frozen mash potato changed my life.
I have been known after a few gins to press this knowledge onto other people. Including complete strangers.

Sceptre86 · 21/01/2020 18:48

I use frozen mixed veg as a quick, fuss free way of getting veg into the kids. I will also buy frozen peppers to add to curries. All other veg I buy fresh and then peel, chop and freeze if I need to. I have tried frozen cauliflower which I thought was awful and the same with broccoli. I have never bought any tinned veg though, might try some.

fedupandlookingforchange · 21/01/2020 18:50

I love frozen veg but find some a little soggy so I avoid those.
Mrsjayy do you bake the cauliflower from frozen?

NewYear2018 · 21/01/2020 18:50

NHS website states
"80g of fresh, canned or frozen fruit and vegetables counts as 1 portion of your 5 A Day."

So nowt wrong with frozen.

I use frozen fruit quite a lot too.

Itscontroversial · 21/01/2020 18:50

Coldemort, frozen mash is a revalation. Packet cheese sauce, throw in cooked fish pie mix from the freezer and a bit of frozen veg, top with thawed frozen mash. Quick blast in the oven and you have "homemade" fish pie. Same principle for cottage pie.

NewYear2018 · 21/01/2020 18:55

Frozen pineapple, whizzed up with yoghurt. Or frozen red berries, chopped up fresh apple, top with crumble mix and cook in oven and voila quick dessert.

It's also a lot cheaper than buying fresh especially when fruit is out of season or imported.

EnidBlyton · 21/01/2020 18:55

how hurtful,
is she rude about other things?

Coldemort · 21/01/2020 19:00

@Itscontroversial if it's good enough for Deliah it's good enough for me...

PigletJohn · 21/01/2020 19:08

I find I can't cook frozen broccoli and get a fresh texture and snap Sad
