What is wrong with this fool? Apparently in James Delingpole's podcast, heavy sigh, he criticises Sam Mendes for featuring a Sikh soldier in WW1 film. Ever heard of the British Empire, Laurence? How many Indians died for Britain? AIBU to say LF is being deliberately divisive and provocative and evidently doing his own publicity?

'There was a fucking dragon in that John Lewis advert. The people with "darker skin" weren't what made it historically inaccurate!' @Reallybadidea
brilliant! Grin that cracked me up!!! and it's true...

1forsorrow · 21/01/2020 09:18

I've only seen woke used as a term of abuse to people with views that other people don't like.

I can help the poster who asks what WOKE means.

It is an acronym for Wailing Obnoxious Knobs Explaining.

I was right then.

1forsorrow · 21/01/2020 09:20

Reallybadidea, that is hilarious. Yes obviously you'd notice a black face rather than a dragon.

Wingedserpentfliesbynight · 21/01/2020 09:20

"It is an acronym for Wailing Obnoxious Knobs Explaining."

I don't consider myself "woke" I'm just not a raving racist who can't cope with a non-white character being shown in a fictional movie.

Zeusthemoose · 21/01/2020 09:20

You're outraged about something you haven't understood properly. Alot of people seem to be doing that lately - must be exhausting.

A Sikh soldier is the opposite of unrealistic, given there was a fair number of settlers in the UK by 1914 and the first gurdwara had been opened 3 years earlier in 1911. Historically, people of colour living in Britain were the norm - from the available evidence, it's estimated that 10s of 1000s of PoC lived here by the 18th century, not including tourists, tradespeople and similar. The whitewashing of British history is the real anachronism. All that expensive education and Fox still parades his embarrassing ignorance of the history of his own country.

PhilSwagielka · 21/01/2020 09:24

Laurence Fox does not give a shit about feminism, he's said some disgusting things about mixed-race kids and Jews, and the fact Mumsnet are treating him as some kind of hero because he doesn't think trans women are women is fucking gross.

Also, I doubt he really cares about grooming gangs and I don't get why people on here think he's some kind of advocate for rape survivors. Has he actually said anything sympathetic about rape survivors or the girls who were abused by those gangs?

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 21/01/2020 09:31

Bit hot under the collar there, Phil.

What has he said about mixed race kids and Jews?

Why do you think he doesn't care about Pakistani grooming gangs?

Why do you think that he says that men can't become women is gross?

Answers-you know quotes from him that will back up your rant- on the back of a stamp please!

DrivingMsCrazy · 21/01/2020 09:34

It must wind him up every single day that he’s from the legendary Fox dynasty, went to Harrow and RADA, is the most elite of the super-privileged within the UK industry, yet completely got his arse kicked in the talent stakes (and in the “being a respected actor” stakes) by his working class, council house-raised, mostly untrained, former teen pop star ex-wife.

Boom! @joyfullittlehippo nails it. His own mediocrity is eating him up.

Lizzie0869 · 21/01/2020 09:39

I've noticed that those posters who think Fox is great and go on about the police being afraid to deal with the sexual exploitation scandal, have very little sympathy with those who like me have shared our experience of SE. They also don't acknowledge what we've said about the sexual and other abuse that goes on to Asian women, of which there is in fact a lot more.

You don't hear them getting outraged about child marriage, or the fact that abused women and girls are then blamed for the abuse they suffer. You don't hear this outrage about so-called 'honour killings'.

And where the vulnerable girls are concerned, they don't talk about their having been seen as making 'lifestyle choices' and being 'child prostitutes'.

Because they don't care about the victims at all. They just don't want to accept all his happens because these men hate women and girls.

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 21/01/2020 09:47

He can't speak out about everything you know.

In the Grooming Gangs cases, it was Pakistani men grooming exclusively white girls. How dare you try to imply these children made lifestyle choices.

You will find that when anyone tries to speak out FGM, child marriages they are more often than not shut down with shite about culture etc.Even the WI were encouraged to not adopt the FGM scandal as their campaign of the year.

Lizzie0869 · 21/01/2020 09:53

I never implied that!! I said that was the prejudice of the police and SS. Hence the inverted commas. Hmm

Jillyhilly · 21/01/2020 09:53

He’s great and I was delighted to see him speaking up on QT. What he says appears to be controversial, but it resonates with an awful lot of people and that’s why he’s getting a lot of new followers and tons of coverage right now. He also likes the UK, enjoys living here, likes British values and doesn’t think it’s a hideous racist patriarchy - and a lot of us agree with him and find this perspective refreshing, especially coming from someone in the entertainment industry, because unlike many celebrities he’s not lecturing us about how to live our lives. He’s actually appreciative of the fact that he lives in one of the most tolerant, liberal countries in the world.

Woke culture, the endless life-sucking emphasis on diversity and inclusivity, the token casting of BAME or female characters in roles that lack authenticity, the po-faced lifestyle hectoring by people in positions of wealth and power, the insistence that everything has to be viewed through the lens of sex or skin colour - at some level it all lacks heart and authenticity, and helps nobody - and I think that most ordinary people sense this and are pushing back against it. It is also a complete indoctrination, ably demonstrated by people on this thread and the last one who simply can’t conceive of a viewpoint that is so fundamentally different to their own, and immediately rush in to root out thought-crime in Fox and anyone who agrees with him. I suspect that most people who hate Fox are still walking around in a state of complete befuddlement about Brexit, confused about why it happened and convinced that they live in a terrible, racist country.

Reallybadidea · 21/01/2020 09:55

How dare you try to imply these children made lifestyle choices.

That is the absolute opposite of what the pp said. Are you deliberately twisting their words or do you have problems with reading comprehension?

Lizzie0869 · 21/01/2020 09:55

Talk about jumping to conclusions. I'm an SA survivor myself, of course I know that 12 and 13 year olds don't make 'lifestyle choices'!!

Clavinova · 21/01/2020 09:57

He claims that racism doesn’t exist

I listened to LF's Delingpod recording in the car yesterday - to hear what all the fuss was about - it's over an hour long. Some of it is general chit chat about his career and family. I didn't agree with everything he said but he made some very good points - he didn't resemble Katie Hopkins at all (IMO).

LF didn't claim that racism doesn't exist - in fact he said there are some 'nasty, horrible racists out there' (and 'some nasty, horrible sexists') who should be called out - but he is fed up of being told that he must be a racist because he is white - and sexist because he is a man.

He said that he wanted to be sold products by companies such as Nike and Gillette without them telling him what to think. He said that he is 'colour blind' and that he treats everyone the same - he doesn't want it implied that he might be a racist simply because he is white. He mentioned that he has 9 nephews and nieces - none of whom are white - and that the UK is already a multi racial society.

He is worried that his two young sons are being indoctrinated to believe that they are inherently racist and sexist He said that his sons have started preempting what they say with, "I'm sorry if this is racist or sexist'...He gave some examples: his youngest son (age 7?) said to him, "I'm sorry if this is 'racist,' but I think mummy is a better cook than you are." His son also told him that "Boris Johnson hates single mothers" - "Ok...where did you read that?" He said that he doesn't mind his sons saying they hate Donald Trump but he wants them to know why they hate him - he wants them to form their own opinions and not automatically think, "the orange man equals bad" because someone else has decided for them.

As for his private school and privilege - it doesn't sound as though he enjoyed his time at Harrow - he revealed that within a few weeks of starting the school (aged 13?) another boy slammed his face on a metal bedstead (because he wouldn't buy a mug/cup from him) and knocked his four front teeth out - literally - not all of his front teeth are real. He also said that he was helping a friend's dc prepare an audition for RADA recently, but the best lesson he could teach him/her was how to deal with rejection - how to cope with being turned away for 9 roles out of every 10 they audition for.

he's said some disgusting things about mixed-race kids
Really? His brother-in-law is comedian Richard Ayoade.

Why do you think that he says that men can't become women is gross?

Go back and read Phil's post again. She said it was gross that MNers were treating him as a hero for his stance on the issue.

Too hot under the collar to read posts before replying to them, are you?

mummmy2017 · 21/01/2020 10:04

I think even if you don't like his views, there are a lot of men that feel the same, the PC brigade are strong on MN, but yet again your transfering your views onto Joe Blogs and look how that played out. Brexit anyone?

Clavinova · 21/01/2020 10:15

Just found the Delingpod broadcast on YouTube - 1,500 likes - 31 dislikes.

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 21/01/2020 10:17

I'm not responsible for her garbled posts, thanks all you apologists!

MrsBethel · 21/01/2020 10:18

That is the absolute opposite of what the pp said. Are you deliberately twisting their words or do you have problems with reading comprehension?

Well, it's not particularly clear is it?

"those posters who think Fox is great"... "where the vulnerable girls are concerned"... "don't talk about their having been seen as making 'lifestyle choices'"

I presume that is intended to convey that the authorities were wrong to see these girls as having made lifestyle choices, and those critical of the authorities should speak about the authorities being wrong about that as well as being racist.
But it could equally well be taken to say those critical of the authorities are wrong to not talk about the girls having been seen to have made 'lifestyle choices'.
IMO the interpretation all depends on whether 'having been seen' carries an air of skepticism or not. How's that for reading comprehension?

Lizzie0869 · 21/01/2020 10:24

It was clear, MrsBethel, that's the reason I used inverted commas. Also, I've spoken frequently about the subject and my own SA, as you must have seen before. Why would I say that young girls are capable of making 'lifestyle choices'? I know how grooming and SA happen.

If I was a new poster, such a misunderstanding would be understandable.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 21/01/2020 10:24

He said that he wanted to be sold products by companies such as Nike and Gillette without them telling him what to think. Most damning quote ever. And you weren't even being ironic.

I have never met anyone who described themselves as 'colour-blind' (barring people with actual red/green colour-blindness) who wasn't an insufferable self-congratulatory pillock. Declaring yourself colour-blind is akin to giving yourself a medal for being 'Not Racist', which you have awarded yourself for not having thrown a brick through anyone's window. Having awarded yourself this cut-out-and-keep medal, you can excuse yourself from any self-reflection and personal growth.

It is the opposite of humility, which is a quality we should strive for when assessing our own flaws.

It surprises me not a whit that the self-appointed colour-blind person has children who are very confused what basic words like racism mean, just as it surprises me not a whit that he's blaming everyone else for that.

Lizzie0869 · 21/01/2020 10:26

I've also had a lot to say about the SE scandal in the past, plus my DDs' birth mum was very likely a victim too.
