to ask what the iced sultanas pastries in the Sainsbury's cafe are called?

Had a 'debate' with the shop assistant in a Sainsbury's cafe today about the nature of the pastry I had chosen. It was:

a) not a belgian bun
b) made of puff pastry (in the cinnamon whirl format)
c) has sultanas (or similar) in it
d) has maybe some sort of almond paste
e) has icing on top
f) has a cherry on the top of the icing
g) is really definitely NOT a belgian bun

I've tried (after the debate) to find a label for said item, but there wasn't one, then tried to find it online in the Sainsburys bakery section, but have not found anything.

I'f MN can't solve this in under 10 mins then I will be sorely dissapointed....so what is it??? (and how much should I have paid :))

Danish?

M3lon · 18/01/2020 16:15

Too vague I think...but I'll check....

chelsea bun?

M3lon · 18/01/2020 16:19

Is a chelsea bun like belgian bun but without icing?

If so then that is the opposite of what I'm going for, which is not a belgian bun and does have icing.....

I'd say Danish or Chelsea bun, either way sounds deelish Smile

TippledPink · 18/01/2020 16:20

Danish seems to be what comes up when I search images for pastries that look how you describe! But not on the Sainsbury site.

merryhouse · 18/01/2020 16:20

Why do you say it's not a belgian bun?

"A sweet bun containing sultanas and usually topped with fondant icing and half a glace cherry" is how Wikipedia explains a belgian bun. The pictures all seem to show the "cinnamon whirl format" too.

Is it the almond paste that makes you think it's not? Presumably then you bought a Marzipan Belgian (which would surely be more expensive than the normal type).

M3lon · 18/01/2020 16:21

Its not a bun, because they are bread based, not puff pastry based.

I mean it definitely isn't a belgian bun....

Well yabu because you didn't take a picture

Fettfrett · 18/01/2020 16:24

Belgian buns and Chelsea buns are both made of a bread-type dough, not pastry. I would call this a sultana danish.

AhoyMrBeaver · 18/01/2020 16:24

It's got to be a Danish pastry. What was the argument?

nokidshere · 18/01/2020 16:25

Probably an iced raisin danish. Plenty of pics if you google.

Quicklittlenamechange · 18/01/2020 16:25

Lemon Iced Danish ?

They always used to have these Smile

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/01/2020 16:25

I think they're called Pain au raisin( even though they're sultanas) They also sell them in a 2 pack from the In store bakery( cheaper too!) I'm often there for the Cinnamon whirls.

M3lon · 18/01/2020 16:25

oh...the plot thickens.

There is something called a Danish Raisin Whirl, that google coughs up...but when you follow the link it says 'product not published'.

Oh and also they come in two packs...strange.

ImpossibleGirl86 · 18/01/2020 16:25

Sounds like a pain au raisin, but with icing on the top for some reason. But obviously pain au raisins aren't almond flavoured either..

Veronicat · 18/01/2020 16:26

It's an iced Danish pastry. We sold them in the coffee shop I once worked in.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/01/2020 16:26

And yes, the icing is Almond Flavoured

TeensArghhhh · 18/01/2020 16:27

If these are them they are called Iced Danish Pastry.....YUM! 😋

nokidshere Don't have a smart phone or I would absolutely have taken a picture...sad times.

I think you are broadly speaking correct though - iced raisin danish - though sainsbury's don't claim to sell that.

Taddda · 18/01/2020 16:27

Does it look like that? That's a Danish...
