To think a 10 year old should eat crusts

My stepson is 11 in a few months and only eats the middle of his sandwiches and then is hungry 1 hour after lunch and grazes on snacks all day. I don't understand why, at nearly 11, he is having his crusts cut off or being allowed to leave them. Is this normal? Do lots of people leave their crusts? Fyi he doesn't have any problems with swallowing or have any allergies.

If he’s grazing on snacks all day, I’d cut most of those out, for a start. Except for a few non-junk ones, just don’t have them available.

And maybe give him something else to eat apart from sandwiches. Or as pps have said, buy crustless bread.

@StillCoughingandLaughing crust sculpture is something I'd like to see! I suppose I'd just feel awkward in a very adult environment leaving a little pile of crusts as it's something I assiciate with children, it's different if you don't like a particular filling, you just take a different sandwich, I suppose leaving the crusts is akin to pulling out the filling and eating the bread, which again I wouldn't expect an adult to do , especially in a professional environment

SilverySurfer · 18/01/2020 15:50

Mid 70s and I don't eat crusts.

my2bundles · 18/01/2020 15:50

One thing I've never done is make my kids eat something they dontt like . My DS similar age as a result has an extremely good diet and is at the age they need to eat more, pre teen growth spurt there will be more over the next 8 years . One thing he always leaves is crusts, it's his body his choice and he eats a good diet so it would be a completely pointless battle. Don't invent orioles that arnt there OP your stepson will resent you for it.

DangerousBeanz · 18/01/2020 15:52

I'm 50 and hate crusts, life is too short to eat shit you don't like.

MsInconspicuous · 18/01/2020 15:58

I'm with you OP.
Irritates me to see people and especially adults leave the crusts (most of the sandwich in some cases) appreciate some people simply don't like them but reckon a lot of it is to do with laziness and not wanting to chew that bit more!
And YES eating the crusts would fill you up more than if you didn't.. surely that's a no brainer???

StillCoughingandLaughing · 18/01/2020 16:01

Unless you have the appetite of a sparrow, a thing strip of bread is not going to make you feel stuffed.

easyandy101 · 18/01/2020 16:06

Crusts are sandwich handles, you're not supposed to eat them imo

Fruityb · 18/01/2020 16:06

My son nibbles his sandwiches right to the edges but doesn’t eat his crusts. He’s also just left me a selection of perfect crescent moon crumpet crusts as well.

Don’t like it don’t eat it. I don’t really see waste as if they’re eating 99% of the bread what’s the problem! Chuck it out for the birds!

userabcname · 18/01/2020 16:11

If all he gets for lunch is a crustless sandwich I'm not surprised he's hungry. Up his protein and give him more substantial meals. Kids need feeding!

Likethebattle · 18/01/2020 16:13

I eat my crusts and have poker straight hair, my friend has never eaten crusts and has super tight curls.

happycamper11 · 18/01/2020 16:14

How on Earth is the crust 'most of a sandwich' ? it is by its very nature just the very outside edges.

StCharlotte · 18/01/2020 16:16

And I have curly hair despite my mother telling me if I didn't eat them I wouldn't

I'm still gutted that I have poker straight hair despite eating half the world's cabbages as a youngster [scowly face].

pigsDOfly · 18/01/2020 16:16

The crust is the best bit of the bread, in my opinion.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 18/01/2020 16:16

Age has nothing to do with it. Some people like crusts and some dont. No-one of any age should have to eat something they don’t like to please anyone else.

Lay off your stepson.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 18/01/2020 16:19

but reckon a lot of it is to do with laziness and not wanting to chew that bit more!

😂😂😂

Of all the bonkers shite Ive read on MN over every years this has to be a contender for top prize.

MissDollyMix · 18/01/2020 16:21

I’m in my 30s and still think crusts are horrible! I never eat them if I can help it and I’m definitely not a fussy eater! I don’t make my children eat them either but I find if I cut the crust off they eat more of the sandwich than if I leave them on and the children eat around the crust. My mother was very insistent I ate my crusts as a child so I slipped them under the table for the dog. Out of habit I still feed my crusts to the dog now. She gets super excited when she hears the toaster pop up Grin

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 18/01/2020 16:22

I knew this was going to be a stepchild just from the title.

Yep.

SophieSong · 18/01/2020 16:25

Lots of people don't like crusts on things. I doubt leaving the crusts off is what's making him so hungry - he's 11, he's growing, it's crazy how much they can put away at that age (and it gets worse!!)

But they do need the extra calories. He's also old enough to be able to choose, within reason, his diet. Obviously he needs to have a balanced diet, but having a stress over crusts at his age is petty.

HavelockVetinari · 18/01/2020 16:25

ShockShockShock

How are there so many people who don't eat crusts?? I've never met an adult who doesn't eat them, ever!

Anyway, crustless folk - YABU, everyone knows the heel of a crusty loaf is the best bit!

WatcherintheRye · 18/01/2020 16:32

Just wondering if you have your own children, op? It doesn't sound like your sharp edges have been smoothed, yet! Honestly. of all the many problems in life which can beset us, children not eating crusts is the very least of them! Be thankful and let him leave his crusts. And give him more to eat.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/01/2020 16:32

How are there so many people who don't eat crusts?? I've never met an adult who doesn't eat them, ever!

Now I am an adult and can make my own choices I don't eat them either.

I AM THE ANTICRUST!!!

HavelockVetinari · 18/01/2020 16:33

Anticrust!! GrinGrin

isabellerossignol · 18/01/2020 16:36

appreciate some people simply don't like them but reckon a lot of it is to do with laziness and not wanting to chew that bit more!

I've met some bone idle people in my time, but I've never met anyone too lazy to chew. If that were the case, you'd think lazy people would all live on smoothies

VenusTiger · 18/01/2020 16:37

38 love crusty bread, but don't eat crusts on sliced unless it's toasted.
