To think a 10 year old should eat crusts

My stepson is 11 in a few months and only eats the middle of his sandwiches and then is hungry 1 hour after lunch and grazes on snacks all day. I don't understand why, at nearly 11, he is having his crusts cut off or being allowed to leave them. Is this normal? Do lots of people leave their crusts? Fyi he doesn't have any problems with swallowing or have any allergies.

but reckon a lot of it is to do with laziness and not wanting to chew that bit more! @MsInconspicuous - you reckoned wrong. I personally won't eat them (not always, depends on bread) because they are dry and bloody boring. When toasted they are usually crispy and coated in butter. I'd rather have another sandwich than fill myself up on dry crusts.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 18/01/2020 16:46

You wait until he hits his teenage years....you'll be begging to go back to the days when the only thing that annoyed you about him was that he wouldn't eat his crusts.

VenusTiger · 18/01/2020 16:46

@PenguinPizza cut his crusts off and give him 2 sandwiches. Feed the crusts to the birds.

CleanAndPaidFor · 18/01/2020 16:47

Cut the boy some slack OP. Are you new to being a step parent? You're definitely going to need to pick your battles, and crusts on sandwiches is not worth it.

1forAll74 · 18/01/2020 16:51

You would eat all the crusts if you were starving in a very poor country, that was according to my late Mum, and I quite agree ! I eat crusts , and really, what is wrong or unpleasant about them ?

PenguinPizza · 18/01/2020 16:55

Wow I had no idea that crusts were an issue for people as I've never met someone who doesn't eat crusts. It is an issue for me because he leaves half of every sandwich and see it as wasting food which I am very against. I wasn't aware of crustless bread - I'll look for it as it sounds like the answer. Thanks.

I don't eat crusts and I'm over 11

happycamper11 · 18/01/2020 16:56

Personally I love the chewy crust of a freshly baked bakery loaf but on standard bread or toast I get bored with them and tend to leave a bit. Nothing to do with laziness as the former isles effort to eat. I think that's quite a funny conclusion to draw 😆

happycamper11 · 18/01/2020 16:57

@PenguinPizza crystless bread is actually pretty pricey.. just cut the crusts off it's not hard! Then you are just removing tiny slivers without paying over the odds and he can eat it all

hazeyjane · 18/01/2020 16:59

Everyone should eat their crusts...who knew the Crust Police would be a thing!

I don't eat many sandwiches but usually cut my crusts off, I just like the sandwich bit. I stick them in a box in the freezer and they get added to tomato soup.

hazeyjane · 18/01/2020 17:00

Also if you cut the Crust off, they won't just take 2 big bites out of the middle!

myself2020 · 18/01/2020 17:02

I think you have to train kids young to eat crusts - once they get used to leaving half the sandwich, the battle is lost unfortunately (no, leaving the crust would only be tolerated for special needs in our house)

gaffamate · 18/01/2020 17:03

Well crusts make your hair go curly. DM made me eat mine and now I have to straighten my hair all the time

MaryShelley1818 · 18/01/2020 17:04

I wouldn't bother cutting the crusts off but wouldn't mind if he left them either. I also know adults who don't eat them

PhantomErik · 18/01/2020 17:08

Lol my niece is 23 & doesn't eat the crusts!

Luckily my 2 DS will happily eat the crusts & the end crusts of bread from a loaf but DD is not keen & unless she's really hungry will leave them.

Sugartitss · 18/01/2020 17:10

Only a stepmother could give a shit about crusts.

Serin · 18/01/2020 17:10

There will be someone along in a minute with suggestions for what to do with uneaten crusts. Maybe freeze until you have a sackful and use to coat the day 6 remsins of your roast chicken.
Poor lad, leave him be.

Oblomov20 · 18/01/2020 17:12

I don't like crusts. I like the middle soft bit.

malloo · 18/01/2020 17:13

YANBU. Depressing how little people care about food waste. And is it so terrible to suggest that kids should eat something they dislike? In our house if they don't like it, fine, they don't have to eat it but they certainly won't be getting snacks later on. I've had friends of DC do this at my house, I don't comment but I do judge their parents! Never met an adult who didn't eat their crusts, that's pathetic.

myself2020 · 18/01/2020 17:18

@malloo same here. they don’t have to eat the crust, but they won’t get anything else either. we‘ve never cut crusts off (babies can deal
with a crust perfectly well), and surprisingly al kids eat crusts.

Mandarinfish · 18/01/2020 17:20

This thread is awful. I can't believe how many people think frequent food waste is perfectly okay.

Dangerfloof · 18/01/2020 17:20

And YES eating the crusts would fill you up more than if you didn't surely that's a no brainer???

You ever even met a ten year old ? From that age until they pay for their own food they do nothing but eat. Male and female alike.
If theres even a whiff of them doing sports too, then it's a never ending eating machine. Not eating crusts will make no difference to how much they inhale on a daily basis

Dangerfloof · 18/01/2020 17:25

You would eat all the crusts if you were starving in a very poor country, that was according to my late Mum
My mother said this shit too. Had no answer when I told her to send it to them then. Well a clout around the ear was the actual answer

PanamaPattie · 18/01/2020 17:28

You don't like him very much do you?

hazeyjane · 18/01/2020 17:30

Trigger warning....
