To think a 10 year old should eat crusts

My stepson is 11 in a few months and only eats the middle of his sandwiches and then is hungry 1 hour after lunch and grazes on snacks all day. I don't understand why, at nearly 11, he is having his crusts cut off or being allowed to leave them. Is this normal? Do lots of people leave their crusts? Fyi he doesn't have any problems with swallowing or have any allergies.

YABU. If he doesn't like crusts, he doesn't like crusts. What's the alternative, force him to eat something he doesn't enjoy?

Also crusts are not the reason he's still hungry!

RollaCola84 · 18/01/2020 14:34

@ColdTattyWaitingForSummer I rarely eat ordinary sliced bread for that reason. Wraps, pittas etc. for me, oddly I do eat crusty bread like a baguette.

FabbyChix · 18/01/2020 14:34

No child should have to eat food they don’t like

OxfordCat · 18/01/2020 14:34

Buy crustless bread and make him 2 rounds of sandwiches instead of 1. Tweenagers need feeding.

PositiveVibez · 18/01/2020 14:35

DD doesn't like crusts. She's 11.

What's the big deal here? And LOL at thinking crusts would suddenly fill up a 10yo child.

What else annoys you about your step-son OP - beacuse when you're making a thread like this, it sounds like this is just one of the many things that irritates you when it comes to him.

OneToThree · 18/01/2020 14:35

Eat crusts, don’t eat crusts 🤷🏻‍♀️

zoobincan · 18/01/2020 14:36

I missed the memo when crust removal was related to age Confused

JellyBook · 18/01/2020 14:37
  1. pick your battles, do not make a big deal about this, it really isn’t.
  2. I cut the crusts off for my 15 year old.
Fairylea · 18/01/2020 14:37

What?! Is this serious? Who cares.. I’m 39 and I hate crusts. We all like different things and they do taste different. Leave him be.

Tink2007 · 18/01/2020 14:38

Is there an age where you’re supposed to suddenly eat crusts? I didn’t as a child; as an adult sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t.

A non issue.

SinkGirl · 18/01/2020 14:38

What is it with kids and crusts? One of my twins (ASD) has just stopped eating crusts and anything “edge” (end pieces of bananas or fish fingers, edges of crumpets etc).

I must have been the same. My Nan used to tell me crusts would give me curly hair - took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that crusts were not any different to the rest of the bread 😂

RightOnTheEdge · 18/01/2020 14:39

Can he have an extra sandwich or give him a bigger lunch sandwich and soup? Add fruit or yoghurt or whatever so he's not eating so many snacks?

atomicblonde30 · 18/01/2020 14:39

I’m 29 and don’t eat my crusts 😬

BeyondMyWits · 18/01/2020 14:39

I'm 55 and find the crusts to be the most disappointing bit of a sandwich, dry hard and flavourless. So, unless I have something to dip the crusts in (mug of tomato soup for instance) I don't eat them either.

I have reached the stage in life where I don't eat the calories that I don't like the taste of.

Bluetrews25 · 18/01/2020 14:40

DCs that age have hollow legs, OP. They will eat you out of house and home, truly. They are burning masses of energy as they grow. FGS feed the lad.

riotlady · 18/01/2020 14:41

I’m 27 and don’t eat my crusts

If it bothers you that much don’t give him sandwiches for lunch?!

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 18/01/2020 14:41

Who knew there were so many adults who don't eat crusts! Bewildering. A friend of mine went on a second date a couple of years ago witha man who very emphatically insisted on no veg with his meal (restaurant), they put side salad on his plate and because a piece of lettuce touched his chips he moaned for the rest of the date about his chips being contaminated. I think he wanted to send them back but she laughed thinking he was joking. There was never a third date.

Eating issues aside, I don't get it, crusts taste like bread, if you're eating a sandwich you like bread..... People who don't eat crusts if you're at a work lunch etc do you really leave a little pile of crusts?!

Elieza · 18/01/2020 14:43

It would be better if he ate them but it’s not a bigger if he doesn’t. The snacking on junk however is a problem. It would be better if there was no crap in the house on which to snack. Only good stuff. Better to eat some more of the healthy things (bread isn’t that good for us) anyway.

notanotherjigsawpiece · 18/01/2020 14:45

I’m 40 and don’t eat crusts! I had a feeling this would be about a step child before I clicked on the thread

Mandarinfish · 18/01/2020 14:47

I agree with you OP. It's a waste of good food.

HoldMyLobster · 18/01/2020 14:48

I'm 50 and don't eat crusts. I'm not all that keen on sandwiches as it is. My dog loves the crusts.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 18/01/2020 14:49

Why are you talking about him being ‘allowed’ to leave his crusts? Why would you want to force a child into eating something they don’t want? He’s leaving a bit of bread; he’s not sneaking out to all-night raves.

People who don't eat crusts if you're at a work lunch etc do you really leave a little pile of crusts?!

What else would they do with them? Create an avant garde sculpture?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 18/01/2020 14:50

I agree with you OP. It's a waste of good food.

Bloody hell, he’s not Oliver Twist.

fantasticfringe · 18/01/2020 14:51

My kids do this, refuse crusts then they are hungry an hour later. I thought because the crusts are tougher they are the bit that fills you up for longer, like jacket potato skins. Or did my parents pull a fast one?

Bluntness100 · 18/01/2020 14:52

I'm fifty one and I don't eat crusts. Dry and fucking tasteless. I'd really rather have something nice to eat than shove down something dry and tasteless to fill myself up.

Yabu.
