To think a 10 year old should eat crusts

My stepson is 11 in a few months and only eats the middle of his sandwiches and then is hungry 1 hour after lunch and grazes on snacks all day. I don't understand why, at nearly 11, he is having his crusts cut off or being allowed to leave them. Is this normal? Do lots of people leave their crusts? Fyi he doesn't have any problems with swallowing or have any allergies.

At 11 he may well be having a growth spurt which may make him extra hungry. The crusts thing is not worth wasting an argument on.

woodhill · 18/01/2020 15:17

I hate them too and I am past 50😊

namechange1041 · 18/01/2020 15:20

Leave the poor boy alone, he doesn't want the crusts woman! Grin

AmelieTaylor · 18/01/2020 15:20

are the sandwiches triangles or oblongs?
there is less crust to a triangle i believe

Please tell me you’re not serious.

Jesus wept.

@PenguinPizza He’s a growing boy, permanently hungry is normal. But you need to be giving him protein & healthy fats, not crappy snack food after bread.

Most boys I know wouldn’t stop inhaling food long enough to bother leaving crusts, but ‍🤷🏻‍♀️a few crusts aren’t going stop him mainlining food for the next few years

Nancydrawn · 18/01/2020 15:20

Crusts on pre-sliced bread are gross.

Inherdefence · 18/01/2020 15:21

A friend who had worked in the bread industry (mass produced factory style bread rather than a bakery) told me never to buy crustless bread because they have to add a lot of chemicals to make it soft. I don’t know if it’s true but it stuck with me.

Just cut the crusts off OP, increase his portion sizes and make sure the snack food you have available is healthy and inexpensive.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/01/2020 15:26

And I have curly hair despite my mother telling me if I didn't eat them I wouldn't

And I ate mine and my hair is as straight as a die!

OUR MOTHERS LIED TO US!!! Shock

diddl · 18/01/2020 15:27

Just leave it to his dad to sort out, Op.

surlecoup · 18/01/2020 15:28

If this is your biggest step-parenting challenge life is good!!

DarkDarkNight · 18/01/2020 15:28

or being allowed to leave them

He doesn’t like crusts. That’s a good enough reason for him to be ‘allowed’ to leave them. Adults don’t like certain foods and it’s just accepted. Should children have to eat things they don’t like at age 11?

nameymcnamechangeagain · 18/01/2020 15:30

I’m 33 and don’t eat crusts 🤷🏻‍♀️

gamerwidow · 18/01/2020 15:31

I dint like crisps either the bread is all hard and stale near the edges. Why make him eat stuff he doesn’t like. I rarely eat sandwiches for this reason and would prefer a roll or a wrap. Maybe he’d like these better too if you’re worried he isn’t eating enough.

insancerre · 18/01/2020 15:31

At 10 he should be able to have a say in what he eats or doesn’t

gamerwidow · 18/01/2020 15:32

Should say I don’t like crusts not crisps.

TeamLannister · 18/01/2020 15:32

I suspect you just don't like him.

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 18/01/2020 15:33

Crusts are horrible they taste burnt. No idea why eating them is seen as some sort of moral obligation

Hoppinggreen · 18/01/2020 15:33

I rarely eat crusts, me and The Dog have an arrangement

AdaColeman · 18/01/2020 15:34

I always eat the crusts (except with smoked salmon and cucumber) and I've got lovely curly hair, so Mum was right! Grin

HunnyMummy1993 · 18/01/2020 15:34

Im 50. dont eat mine. Not on sliced bread. Never have.

I buy wraps, fresh baked off the bakery counter or leave them. Even at a work lunch.

They’re all dry and pasty and totally ruin the taste and texture of a nice sandwich.

perfectstorm · 18/01/2020 15:40

He dislikes crusts. Why should he eat them? There's no great waste and it's not like they have health benefits. Confused

Does his breathing irritate you, too?

Everyone should eat their crusts. I can't abide wasteful fussiness like that, 10 or 40 or whatever age.

m0therofdragons · 18/01/2020 15:43

Just cut a sliver of crust off so waste is minimal and let him crack on. Don't make issues over something so non issuey.

Lovemusic33 · 18/01/2020 15:44

I know a 32 year old that doesn’t eat sandwich crusts or pizza crusts.

I don’t think it’s odd, if you don’t like something then you don’t eat it.

Notso · 18/01/2020 15:45

One of my most hated tasks from working at schools was handling the minging unwanted crusts at lunch time, almost as bad as the stink of pappy sliced bread and the fart smell wet wafer thin ham.
My kids have wraps, pittas, thins or bread rolls for school.
