Laurence Fox on Question Time

SuckingDieselFella · 17/01/2020 20:00

It isn't ok to try and shut anyone up with remarks about their skin colour. It doesn't matter if that skin colour is white, black or green with purple spots.

His fellow actors have been told to "denounce" him. It looks like he can wave goodbye to his career. What lovely tolerant people the ultra woke are.

Totally agree with MrsTerryPratchett at 20.23 yesterday.

KaptainKaveman · 18/01/2020 08:28

I don't know much about Lawrence Fox but I do know that he is part of the Fox acting dynasty. That will have opened many doors. He went to Harrow? that will open many doors. He is white and male.....he is the embodiment of white male privilege but alas seems incapable of understanding this obvious fact.

Oakenbeach · 18/01/2020 08:31

I see oakenbeach so what we really need is a new word. Not woke. No one has taken the middle right words (such as conservative) and appropriated those in the same way as abroad brush insult. The far Right still remains a term for this.

I agree, a new word would be helpful.... In many ways I would say I’m liberal. I agree with most views held to be “liberal”.

Oakenbeach · 18/01/2020 08:50

The problem with a new word is that those who I am seeking to label want to be regarded as ‘liberal’, and want to drag all those who have liberal values along with them.

What about the “wokerati”?

Oakenbeach · 18/01/2020 08:56

I think the refugee crisis has done this in people’s minds. However many children (numbers unknown) die crossing the med, we (the UK) still don’t want to help those people out.

It’s the relentless economic immigration from the EU that I believe is behind it. We effectively had the equivalent of the population of Coventry (300,000) entering the UK each and every year as a result of the Single Market. It’s naive to think that wouldn’t put a strain on society.... A good Leaver friend of mine has said she wants EU immigration controlled as then we would have the capacity to support refugees more!

Oakenbeach · 18/01/2020 08:59

Labels are the death of rational discourse.

I don’t see how we can have rational discourse without the use of labels. How else are we to describe things in a succinct manner? Clearly labels need to be properly and sensitively applied, which I accept doesn’t always happen, and I include myself in that criticism.

Sagradafamiliar · 18/01/2020 09:04

On a thread where 'playing the race card' wasn't challenged even once, I'm not surprised at how it's turned out. 'White privilege' isn't racist. Some people don't know what racism is if that's what they're wringing their hands about. I'm related to people who think like this. It's so embarrassing.

Livelovebehappy · 18/01/2020 09:12

Absolutely agreed with every single thing he said. Breath of fresh air. And apparently whilst he has had some trolling, he has had more people giving him a pat on the back, so I think his career is absolutely not going to suffer too much. And let’s be honest, I don’t think he’ll lose any sleep at being shouted down by the Lilly Allen types in the celeb world. The hypocrisy displayed by some of those liberal celebs is unbelievable.

Snowy111 · 18/01/2020 09:16

The woman in the audience was trying to say that LF was struggling to empathise with victims of racism because of his own experiences in life. Which was true, he comes across as a person completely lacking in any empathy. White privilege doesn’t make a person racist per se, but it can give you a blinkered view of the world, and a lack of understanding of the experience of those less privileged.

The press haven’t necessarily been consciously racist, but they are predominantly white fairly well off people, and that puts aN unconscious skew on things. Look at Danny baker ffs- I honestly don’t think he is racist in his views but completely blinkered by his own experience in life .

And there is no doubt at all that there have been racist comments/jokes etc about MM on SM

Lizzie0869 · 18/01/2020 09:20

I'm always disappointed that he isn't Hathaway in real life.

Whereas in real life he's more like the character he played in one episode of Foyle's War, where he was a despicable Nazi sympathiser. Seems like he was playing himself in that one.

He is a knobber. But sometimes you need knobbers as an antidote to competitive wokeness. Otherwise the left eats itself

The left has already eaten itself, that particular horse bolted years ago. The hyper-PC authoritarians have driven ordinary people away from the left and they aren't coming back any time soon.

Trump will win again this year, Labour haven't got a prayer of winning an election again for a decade. Britain is about to leave the EU. The left has been reduced to shrieking from the sidelines as the world passes them by.

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 18/01/2020 09:29

Naïve to think that a great deal of the QT audience cheering him was "scary"

There is a backlash to the woke agenda being pushed as far as it has and about time too.

It is not racist to say that you do not like a BAME and many, many people are sick of being frightened to say that because they will be labelled a racist.

If it doesn't stop soon, the word 'racism' will be devalued, mean nothing, become laughable andreal acts of racism will be easily ignored.

"Check your white privilege" is a stupid remark, when white people on the breadline with no chances are told-as some pp did up thread- that compared to the awful Shami's son (who goes to private school and has the best chances)they have more privilege than him.

That is total bollocks and it has gone too far. When things go too far, there is backlash and anyone who doesn't think so is hard of thinking.

I do not like Shami. That is not racist.
Immigration to the EU got out of hand. That is not racist.

These are not Hate Crimes.

Some fool writing a book entitled that you will no longer speak to a particular race "why I am no longer talking to white people about race" is racist. Being BAME should not give her a right to trash a whole race but right now it does.

I don't think all this woke, 'check your privilege" balls will fly for much longer. In fact, it is falling to ground pretty rapidly and if foolish people persist with it, they will make the problem of real racism much much worse.

Well done, Lawrence Fox for sounding a bugle!

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 18/01/2020 09:31

Calling him a "Nazi Sympathiser" is stupid and displays someone who has no knowledge of anything.

It makes you look silly and, worse, makes the term worthless.

Go away and read a fucking book.

Snowy111 · 18/01/2020 09:34

Net EU migration is about half the figure you state, and there is about the same or more net migration from non EU countries which we could have controlled, but point taken. We can’t get doctors appointments, school places, NHS is overrun, traffic too busy, all not good.

We (the UK) are still massively in debt despite the economic advantage of the net migration, which is worrying. If we weren’t in so much debt there wouldn’t have been the spending cuts/freezes. While the rich get richer. I really don’t think the right people and institutions are being blamed.

derxa · 18/01/2020 09:36

There is a picture of LF, Fiona Bruce and the university lecturer having a drink and a laugh after QT. Sometimes things are not what they seem...

derxa · 18/01/2020 09:41

Oops I may have got that wrong Blush

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 18/01/2020 09:43

Yes, it was the journalist from the panel that Fiona and Lawrence were having a drink with.

Of course, that may be a racist picture because it showed only white people, probably laughing at BAMEs.

Why was Shami not in it? White Privilege. Racism surely. Smile

CaptainButtock · 18/01/2020 09:44

I agreed with him.The reason I’m not fond of MM is nothing to do with race, and everything to do with the fairly obvious unhealthy dynamic between the two of them.(was he looking for a mother figure I wonder?)
I also cannot stand her incessant wittering about ‘female empowerment’ etc...
Also.....I genuinely wouldn’t have known she was black if you hadn’t told me. She’s had her nose done and obv doesn’t leave her hair in its natural Afro so it really isn’t v noticeable (by her own doing)

AngelsSins · 18/01/2020 09:45

Woke or not, no one is entitled to tolerance when they are intolerant themselves.

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 18/01/2020 09:47

Yes, but the fact that she felt she had to do those things show that she was suffering from racism will come the reply from the Woke Lot, you know, the same folk that yell if a white woman braids her hair.

^^ Totally agree with all of this.

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 18/01/2020 09:50

No-one is more intolerant than the far left and that is why they have kissed goodbye to power in this country for a very long time.

Ordinary people, you know centre left and right are woke alright. They have woken up to the fact that WOKE is shite.

Hurrah!

Biscoffer · 18/01/2020 09:52

@MakeMineEarlGrey

*MakeMineEarlGrey

No, he was saying he was bored with people of mixed race ethnicity using race as their default setting if anyone criticises them.

I would LOVE some real examples of racism by posters here.*

Oh so because you haven’t seen it, racism doesn’t exist. I can’t be bothered telling you about the racism I’ve experienced as a mixed race person in this country so here’s some indisputable examples for you:
