To get really grumpy after exercise?

I thought exercise was supposed to chill you out. I've just run 5k on the treadmill. Really enjoyed it while I was doing it. Got into the car with dh afterwards and felt so irritable and grumpy. I'm still a miserable cow now. I get like this after Parkrun also. Why??

Hungry?

BlackBlueBell · 16/01/2020 21:23

Maybe you need to do an exercise after to wind down? Like go swimming or even just chill out in the hot tub or sauna if your gym has them? When it’s warmer I’d go running somewhere scenic like a park or country lane rather than a treadmill.

Mustrryharder · 16/01/2020 21:24

It sounds like lack of sugar or hunger to me.

Trewser · 16/01/2020 21:25

This is the first time I've run on the treadmill for years and i really enjoyed it. Maybe I need a sugary snack after!

Blood sugar levels?

tunnocksreturns2019 · 16/01/2020 21:51

Dehydrated?

ArkAtEee · 16/01/2020 21:51

Low blood glucose probably (says the diabetic) Smile

stopgap · 16/01/2020 21:56

You sound depleted. Are you eating enough throughout the day?

onemorerose · 16/01/2020 22:05

Are you just really tired!

mybabyisteething · 16/01/2020 23:01

I get like that when I'm hangry!

Trewser · 16/01/2020 23:07

I am both tired and dieting! I did have a crumpet with jam before I went and a slice of cake!

It's so bad when I finish parkrun that I have snapped at the marshals before Blush I'm normally very polite and friendly!

I also get very very cold. Perhaps I just shouldn't do exercise!

You sound a bit like me. I do lots of half marathons and after some of them I am so grumpy, even if they've gone really well. My friends have even told me off for it but I can't help it! I've come to the conclusion that it's low blood sugar or I'm just a grumpy cow!

Its never happened after parkrun or short races though, then again I'm used to running shorter distances.

Looobyloo · 16/01/2020 23:19

I also get very cold after too. Perhaps it is low blood sugar?

YasssKween · 16/01/2020 23:20

I'm with you OP. These endorphins I hear of... nowhere to be seen!

whiteroseredrose · 17/01/2020 07:31

I thought it was just me! All my friends went on about how amazing they felt after exercise classes - I wanted to smash plates and punch people!!

Trewser · 17/01/2020 08:32

How funny! I wanted to smash plates and punch people!! that's exactly how I feel 🤣

I slept well and feel great this morning. I also tend to get quite a big endorphin rush while I am actually running. I have a 5k on Saturday evening, so although I am planning to walk half of it as its extremely hilly, I might stock up on a few more crabs than normal and see how that goes.

Eat a better breakfast (cake??!!) like toast, avi, eggs. Etc. Then have some protein and carb after exercise.

Trewser · 17/01/2020 08:32

Carbs not crabs 🤣🤣🤣

I had cake in the afternoon- homemade with fruit in it if that makes a difference! Not for breakfast! Two eggs for breakfast! Hate avocado.

I have to eat directly after or I feel the same: a banana normally does it. Also winding down at the end rather than finishing after the hardest part of a workout

ineedto · 17/01/2020 08:44

You need a decent pre exercise snack.

Iggly · 17/01/2020 08:45

Eat properly.
And there is no excuse for being rude!

Traffy · 17/01/2020 08:50

That's really not on. If you can't control your temper, get some help.

5k really shouldn't deplete your sugar levels, that's no excuse.
