To get really grumpy after exercise?

I thought exercise was supposed to chill you out. I've just run 5k on the treadmill. Really enjoyed it while I was doing it. Got into the car with dh afterwards and felt so irritable and grumpy. I'm still a miserable cow now. I get like this after Parkrun also. Why??

It's the sugar crash from eating sugary carbs

Damntheman · 17/01/2020 09:10

Yeah you need to eat something! I'd HIGHLY recommend the Barebells protein bars, they taste AMAZING, they'll fix you right up :)

That's really not on. If you can't control your temper, get some help

Yes, that's why I am asking here. I don't have a temper! To be fair 'snapped' was a bit strong, I just wasn't super friendly and ecstatic like most finishers. Just grumpy looking and muttered 'thanks'. But I agree, its not great. I don't think a gp would be interested in me going in and saying 'Hi, I am very friendly and positive and motivated 99% of the time but when I've run quite hard I am grumpy for 30 mins' Doubt that would refer me to CBT training!

So I'm thinking this might be right as I had two sugary things about 2 hours before going, because I thought the sugar would help. And I don't eat much sugar as a rule. Maybe I will try no sugar whole earth peanut butter on a bit of wholemeal toast instead and see if that makes a difference. Cranks Organic wholemeal loaf is amazing.

That it is an OK excuse to be irritated and snarky? why on earth would you think that? I don't like being irritated at all, and I am not snarky, just go very quiet.

user1493413286 yes, I didn't wind down properly as I had to go and pick up dh. Obviously you don;t have time to wind down at parkrun either. I think I will make sure I do that, AND take some sort of snack/drink that might help. Maybe if I wander off by myself and have a drink/snack before giving in my barcode I can alleviate it at parkrun also.

Looobyloo that sounds so similar! What do you eat before and after?

Hungry I expect. I'm off to the gym shortly and taking a flapjack for the walk home.
TBH I never get a runners / exercise high or anything. I work out to keep healthy. I'm still a miserable bugger Grin.

@Trewser before parkrun I don't eat but if I'm doing a half marathon race I'll have a bowl of porridge usually. I can't normally eat after a rade for hours as my appetite goes but if I'm grumpy I force something sweet down me. Doesn't always work though.

I don't get grumpy but I can feel pumped/ angry sometimes after exercise. For example if someone were to start on me I'd be quite up for a fight, I sort of feel invincible I think, maybe it's the endorphin rush or the increase in testosterone that exercise can produce. Btw I've never ever had a fight and never will, but it's funny how it can engage that part of your brain.
