I’ve heard his name a few times now, mainly people saying he is dangerous but that friends of theirs have started raving about him.
I only know what I have read within a guardian article (which I know is a biased source) but he does seem dangerous.
I thought I would ask the MN collective their opinion...

I think he's really interesting too. But I'm pretty open minded.

BlokeTarget · 17/01/2020 19:12

The Cathy Newman Interview was eye opening.

He’s not afraid to share his viewpoint and back up with real time data or statistics from academic research.

Cathy sadly got caught out and there’s a very brief pause in the interview.. maybe 1.5-2 seconds where she didn’t know what to say. It’s a long 2 seconds of dead air and I personally enjoyed every second of it.

A bully, who's not as intelligent as he thinks he is. (And tends to be admired by other people who are less intelligent than they think they are.)

usernamepp · 17/01/2020 19:39

His books are excellent

Scatterlit · 17/01/2020 19:45

@Trewser, that’s hilarious. You priding yourself on your open-mindedness when I remember your username because of your belligerence on Mn. It doesn’t surprise me at all that you’re a JP fan.

AutumnRose1 · 17/01/2020 20:45

I see others are referencing the Cathy Newman interview. I also thought that was brilliant but I can’t find anything else where he speaks so well as with so much clarity.

So I remain mystified.

Nice to be recognised Grin also nice not to necessarily be part of the Mumsnet hive mind which decrees who we should and shouldn't like!

I agree with Genderfreejoe: "Maybe next time Cathy will prepare properly for her interviews, rather than doing very little research and instead making assumptions about peoples beliefs. Utterly dreadful interview on her part. I was embarrassed for her."

He wiped the floor with her. My 10 year old can, and has, formed stronger, more logical arguments in debating club than she was able to. She was embarrassing.

Apart from that interview, in which I thought him measured, I don't know much about him. Cathy was clutching a straws half the time.

AutumnRose1 · 17/01/2020 23:48

annie I’ll watch that interview again but I didn’t think it was that Cathy assumed his beliefs, more that she hadn’t looked into the issue properly. Which is almost worse!

This is an interesting interview where he flips the whole male patriarchy debate on its head.

There’s a good Jeremy Vine one out there too Smile

AutumnRose1 · 18/01/2020 00:23

Bloke thank you, I’ll watch tomorrow.

Patroclus · 18/01/2020 09:14

Nice try with moving the goalposts from 'presents himself as a scholar' to 'is a scholar'. We can all see what was written. Hes an academic who gives higher education inspired lectures on tour on Orwell....

donquixotedelamancha · 18/01/2020 09:33

Do you think fascism means what it meant even 10 years ago?

Fascism means what it always did.

The idiots who put anti-fascist in their Twitter bio, and call things like support for a free press fascist, just get the definition wrong.

There have been a couple of anti-fascists who've suggested burning 'problematic' books. I particularly enjoyed those.

Tellmetruth4 · 18/01/2020 09:36

He seems to appeal to ‘lost’ folk who are easily impressed. He’s a good fit for the current political climate but I don’t predict his star will shine once this age of populism is over.
