Breeder refusing to give me puppy or my money back

I’m not sure if I’m being u or where I stand on this.
DH and I have decided to get a puppy early feb. We have a 2 year old and another on the way but not due til summer. We have wanted a dog for ages and decided now is the best time as my DC has just started full time nursery, I’m not in work so I have plenty of time during the day to train and spend time with the puppy. For a few weeks after I give birth DH will be taking over walks but I will still be doing the training during the day and newborn will be joining me on school runs etc so my routine doesn’t change really. I’ve raised puppies before so I know what it entails and also obviously had a newborn before so I don’t see any great issues.
We went to view some puppies a couple of weeks ago with DC, chose a specific puppy, breeder was happy discussing diet and training etc and then asked for a deposit. I paid the deposit via bank transfer the next morning. She has now text me last night and said she had one of her friends (who is also friends with me via Facebook) to have a look at my Facebook profile and show her what was on it and she has seen that I’m pregnant and now is telling me I’m “deceitful” and she “can’t trust me with her puppy”. I didn’t think it was a huge deal and I was required to tell her I was pregnant? Obviously the puppy is going to a good home with us so I don’t see an issue. I completely understand wanting your puppies to go to a good home that will look after them but I wouldn’t have thought having a baby 6 months after purchasing a puppy was a big deal.
The conversation went on for about 20 minutes of her basically patronising me and saying that in 6 months I would be calling her to take the dog back. I eventually said to her to either tell me she’s happy for the puppy to come to us or she’s not happy for the puppy to come to us, she replied “I’ll speak to my partner and decide”. I have not heard from her yet so I text her again saying she needs to let me know or send me my money back, she has read the message and ignored it.
Am I in the wrong? What would you do?

I misread!!!

I was sure the OP said she paid a 5% deposit! My bad!

Crunchymum · 15/01/2020 14:46

But even £650 on a dog, when you are a low income household doesn't make good financial sense.

DeathByPuppy · 15/01/2020 14:47

Chi’s - famous for potential for tricky temperaments. Also a breed prone to airway issues (tracheal collapse in particular). Hip & knee problems.

Frenchies - famous for huge airway problems and skeletal problems

Not a combo I’d want to take a risk on, especially not knowing the histories or having an insight into their genetic health.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 15/01/2020 14:47

Jesus Christ, who the hell thought that was a good idea to cross breed? If the breeder was any kind of decent she'd have had the litter terminated.

Yanbu, for wanting your money back.

But yabu for not doing some research and encouraging people to breed these poor animals that will no doubt suffer awful health problems........ I'm amazed the bitch survived the birth tbh.

DeathByPuppy · 15/01/2020 14:48

And yes, getting big French bulldog heads through a chi pelvis. Grim. Even Frenchie mums have high chance of c-section delivering their own puppies because of narrow pelvises and big heads.

Juliette20 · 15/01/2020 14:49

SINBU to decide not to sell you the puppy. SIVBU not to refund the deposit. 48 hours to refund the deposit or you shame her all over social media, and report to police and trading standards.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 15/01/2020 14:50

@Crunchymum completely agree. I find it really bizarre that they have no much spare cash but still claim UC but apparently we're not allowed to talk about that Smile

I feel very sorry for the female dog- yes it was an accidental breeding but had they been responsible owners they would have taken the dog to the vets to stop the pregnancy progressing.
I wonder if in fact someone else has offered more money for the pup.

AgathaX · 15/01/2020 15:03

Fucking hell!! This sorry tale is getting worse. I just don't believe that was an accidental mating. Chihuahua owners are not known for letting their dogs roam off lead. How fucking irresponsible of the owner, and what on earth makes you think that this would be a good cross breed?

zoobincan · 15/01/2020 15:13

The breed is chihuahua x french bully. The dad is a french bulldog and mum is chihuahua.

Are they actually? Or are they cross bred too? I mean how will you ever know why the breeding actually is?

Scarsthelot · 15/01/2020 15:23

What the fuck? Surely no one would want a puppy from those 2 dogs when the parents are not health checked.

I am struggling to believe this to be honest.

If it is true, ops is more responsible that than the owner of these puppies.

lborgia · 15/01/2020 15:25

Oh but it will be so cutey, and ickle, and fashionable.... Envy

FizzyIce · 15/01/2020 15:25

Oh my god... chihuahua and French bulldog ??
That’s a recipe for disaster right there . I would steer well clear of cross breeds like that , especially ones that will technically be malformed .
The horror ..

ItsGoingTibiaK · 15/01/2020 15:33

She has just replied to my message from yesterday saying she will refund “when she has time” so I will give her til the morning.

So still hasn’t actually refused to do anything yet? Just not doing everything immediately like you want. Which still leaves your thread title as untrue.

Branleuse · 15/01/2020 15:36

She let a bulldog fuck her chihuahua? In the park? By accident?

Bullshit. Shes trying to make a weird fucking crossbreed and her chihuaha will likely die in childbirth, so honestly, get your deposit bsck asap and please dont be so stupid next time

ivfbabymomma1 · 15/01/2020 15:36

How is the poor tiny chihuahua going to birth those puppies?!?! Or have they been born?? Still how horrendous!!!!!

Thedeadwood · 15/01/2020 15:46

Bloody hell this story gets worse. That mating is horrific on so many levels.
If she was in any way a decent owner (and she’s certainly not a decent breeder), even IF she was insanely unlucky and the mating was completely accidental and out of her control (which I would struggle to believe), she could have gone straight to the vet and had the doggy equivalent of plan B injection.
The fact that she has continued with what could have been such a dangerous pregnancy is barbaric. Count yourself lucky you won’t have one of those pups. God only knows what problems they might have down the line. Utterly disgraceful.

Sadiee88 · 15/01/2020 15:57

That puppy is going to have so many health issues! £650!!!!! for a mongrel..... essentially. If anyone buys one of those pups get really good health insurance, they are going to need it!
She should give you your deposit back and stop stalking people after taking their cash.
I had a pup Labrador as a single person and it was the hardest thing ever. His training cost me £200. Fences £700 because he was a jumper, £50 a month for food, £25 for insurance (went up to £65 a month due to him tearing a knee ligament, had to pay £1500 towards the insurance payout of £4K) 2 hours exercise a day. Woke up every couple of hours for the toilet for about six weeks after I had him. I love dogs but I doubt I’ll have another until I retire.
I still have my dog and also pay £25 a month so he can go to the dog park and play as exercising him with a toddler was a nightmare. He’s now 9 and has arthritis so needs pain meds £££££££ kerching! I’d seriously borrow someone’s dog, or even foster before you get one. A puppy and young ones😢 so much hard work! Good luck if you do get one!

fivedogstofeed · 15/01/2020 16:03

Chi x french bulldogShockShock she's lucky her poor chi is still alive.

Accidental mating - absolute bullshit. She's making enough for a holiday.

MyLamaDontLikeYou · 15/01/2020 16:08

To answer your question - you are not being unreasonable.
I hope you get your money back - let us know how you get on. Also if you do, you may well have dodged a bullet because that's a lot of money for a mongrel essentially and one that has high likelihood of health issues. It's just not a good mix (in my opinion).

LakieLady · 15/01/2020 16:13

I'll be honest with you. I never knew how much hard work a puppy would be until I got one 6 months ago.

My first puppy ran me ragged. He was a little bugger, and could get into places I never dreamed possible (he could climb, and open doors). I swear it was worse than having a toddler and the thought of both together is terrifying, never mind adding a newborn into the mix.

Beautiful3 · 15/01/2020 16:29

£650 is really cheap. My mixed breed cost me £1350!

LakieLady · 15/01/2020 16:30

(btw you literally just have to say you’re an alcoholic and turn up to your UC appointment drunk to get payments higher rate with no follow ups)

Apologies for the derail but I have never read such utter bollocks. I'm, a benefit adviser and one of my referring services is a project with a lot of alcohol dependent clients. I've taken numerous cases to tribunal because the healthcare professionals who carry out the assessments think that someone who is either pissed or in withdrawal is capable of working, without endangering themselves or others.

And I've won every single one.
