Breeder refusing to give me puppy or my money back

Ownerofsmallpeople · 14/01/2020 18:30

I’m not sure if I’m being u or where I stand on this.
DH and I have decided to get a puppy early feb. We have a 2 year old and another on the way but not due til summer. We have wanted a dog for ages and decided now is the best time as my DC has just started full time nursery, I’m not in work so I have plenty of time during the day to train and spend time with the puppy. For a few weeks after I give birth DH will be taking over walks but I will still be doing the training during the day and newborn will be joining me on school runs etc so my routine doesn’t change really. I’ve raised puppies before so I know what it entails and also obviously had a newborn before so I don’t see any great issues.
We went to view some puppies a couple of weeks ago with DC, chose a specific puppy, breeder was happy discussing diet and training etc and then asked for a deposit. I paid the deposit via bank transfer the next morning. She has now text me last night and said she had one of her friends (who is also friends with me via Facebook) to have a look at my Facebook profile and show her what was on it and she has seen that I’m pregnant and now is telling me I’m “deceitful” and she “can’t trust me with her puppy”. I didn’t think it was a huge deal and I was required to tell her I was pregnant? Obviously the puppy is going to a good home with us so I don’t see an issue. I completely understand wanting your puppies to go to a good home that will look after them but I wouldn’t have thought having a baby 6 months after purchasing a puppy was a big deal.
The conversation went on for about 20 minutes of her basically patronising me and saying that in 6 months I would be calling her to take the dog back. I eventually said to her to either tell me she’s happy for the puppy to come to us or she’s not happy for the puppy to come to us, she replied “I’ll speak to my partner and decide”. I have not heard from her yet so I text her again saying she needs to let me know or send me my money back, she has read the message and ignored it.
Am I in the wrong? What would you do?

Personally think she's spent your money op, trying to buy time to get it or making excuses. How much was the deposit? You haven't said..

Ownerofsmallpeople · 15/01/2020 13:27

The deposit was £300. I will leave it til tonight as I understand people have work. But then again she found time to message me back and be online and like others have said it takes 30 seconds to transfer. Also I seem to remember her saying she wasn’t going back to work until the puppies had all gone. I will message her back in the evening and ask.

Or she's just busy and will do it this evening.

Ownerofsmallpeople · 15/01/2020 13:28

Yes I am more concerned about my cash - she has already stated she doesn’t want to sell the puppy to me so there’s no point worrying about that as I can’t change her mind but now she does have a decent amount of my money which hasn’t been returned since two days ago when she made that decision.

@Ownerofsmallpeople just a thought - it does take 30 seconds however I only do it on my laptop and if I'm out and just have my phone I couldn't do it until later.

Ownerofsmallpeople · 15/01/2020 13:33

@WhenISnappedAndFarted I understand that, this is why I’m going to give her time to do it

Just to challenge some of those saying that you are wrong to consider a puppy at this stage. We are not breeders but we did have a litter of puppies from our bitch a few years ago, my SIL has one of the puppies - took it home with her when her little girl was 1 month old. Of course we were on hand to take the puppy back and care for it until they were ready, had that been needed, but it wasn't. She was at home with the puppy because she was on maternity leave, she already had a son so school run etc was also needed and a good way to exercise the puppy with the baby in a sling and the baby and puppy have a lovely relationship. Lots of people said that she was crazy but she had dogs all of her life so knew exactly what was expected. The dog has a lovely life, is well trained and is the centre of the family. Good luck x

BumpyLumps · 15/01/2020 13:45

The DEPOSIT was 300?? What's the full price?! And this is for a puppy that came from an accidental pg?

You realise that there are hundreds of puppies / dogs in shelters, specially this time of year?

TommyDaisy18 · 15/01/2020 13:47

I put a deposit on a puppy but the next day I received a letter to go in to hospital for a operation I got a cancellation when I informed the breeder and even sent my hospital admission letter shes refused to return my deposit I had no one to look after the puppy plus she want me to collect at 5wks old just wanted them gone I said that's far to young to let puppies go to new homes she told me she bottle fed from babies i still havent had my deposit returned all because i was goin into hospital theres alot of breeders out there only in it for the money not the puppies just becareful your paying a deposit to just a butch of money grabbers

SusanneLinder · 15/01/2020 13:49

When she had time? Tell her she has 48/72 hrs or whatever length of time you want to give her, and then start proceedings if she doesn't.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 15/01/2020 14:08

The DEPOSIT was 300?? What's the full price?!

That's what I was thinking.
What breed is it OP? (Obviously not talking about the random half that came from the park Confused)

zoobincan · 15/01/2020 14:11

£300 DEPOSIT

For a mutt Hmm

Ownerofsmallpeople · 15/01/2020 14:18

The breed is chihuahua x french bully. The dad is a french bulldog and mum is chihuahua. The total cost is £650.

PrayingandHoping · 15/01/2020 14:22

£650 for an accidental cross breed????????? Good grief

Tatiebee · 15/01/2020 14:25

She sounds like a good, responsible breader looking out for the welfare of her pups. She should be returning your deposit though.

lborgia · 15/01/2020 14:26

FFS. You are paying on the way to near breeder prices for something with no papers, no idea if the litter will have any issues. Honestly. Speechless.

Emcont · 15/01/2020 14:28

@Tatiebee - Have you not read any of the thread?! She is not a breeder. Her dog got 'accidentally pregnant on a park run'.

Red flags everywhere!

messolini9 · 15/01/2020 14:29

She sounds like a good, responsible breader looking out for the welfare of her pups.

She isn't.
She let her in-season bitch out offlead, got her knocked up, is not a professional dog breeder, & is charging an eye-watering sum for some accidentally conceived mongrels.

The only thing she has got right in the whole sorry debacle is to refuse to let one of the pups go to a family with a toddler in situ & a baby on the way.

DeathByPuppy · 15/01/2020 14:35

Whilst I agree that £650 is very steep for an accidental park mongrel litter from non health tested parents, I still think she’s doing the right thing calling a halt to your original agreement. She absolutely should refund your deposit though.

If you do want a puppy in the future, I suggest you either go true rescue or source a proper registered, health tested (including DNA testing for common in breed conditions), ethically and carefully bred for temperament as well as health puppy from a quality, licensed breeder. One you’ve vetted and who has vetted you, ideally one of a number you’ve visited to get a feel for what’s right, met the mums (or potential mums), had a look at the their paperwork, had a look at where the puppies will be whelped and raised. Please avoid scenarios like ‘a friend of a friend on Facebook’ (or Gumtree, or Pets4Homes).

EvilPea · 15/01/2020 14:35

That sounds cheap to me. I know two people who have bought crosses they have paid just under £2000. Both parents had papers though.
So £600 sounds cheap to about right for ones with no papers

DeathByPuppy · 15/01/2020 14:37

*Not that rescue pups aren’t ‘proper’, I meant ‘proper’ breeder rather than a backyard ‘have a go’ job like the one in the OP.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 15/01/2020 14:37

OP get your money back. Those dogs will have all kinds of health problems.

Crunchymum · 15/01/2020 14:38

Not to bang on about childcare but the income threshold to receive funded hours for a 2yo is just over £16K, which means that the OP is spending 10% of their annual income on a dog??

That is fucking irresponsible.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 15/01/2020 14:39

@Crunchymum the dog isn't £1600 though is it. Quick maffs.

Wolfiefan · 15/01/2020 14:42

No responsible person would let a chihuahua bitch have bulldog pups. Shock
Must’ve been a c section.
People are arseholes. Angry
