To be mad at husband (food)

fencedoff · 14/01/2020 18:25

I bath cook my lunch at the start of my working week so I can take nice food to work each day.

I made a big pan of pasta this morning to see me through the next four days. I was rushing around and it didn't have tome to cool so I covered it and left it on the side.

My H ate some, decided he didn't like it and binned the WHOLE contents of the pan because he thought I just "prepared too much".

I'm mad!!!!!!

I've known too many men who thought that they were the only ones who mattered and who had needs, Food is often one of those areas where their controlling or selfish nature readily shows. I don't know if the OP's husband is normally like that but its very common for a certain type of man to eat everything, dump food that doesn't interest him or take more than his share without considering his partner and children or not giving a shit about them.

One day as I left to go shopping I said to my dh that the full packet of bacon in the fridge was on date so should be eaten for lunch.
I returned at 1 to the glorious smell of bacon and asked if he had cooked some for me.
He had cooked and eaten the whole pack, 8 rashers, because apparently I'd told him to!

Serin · 14/01/2020 19:30

Numpty.
Tonight, my DH threw out a freshly made bowl of salad, that I had just made for lunch tomorrow.
His excuse was that he thought I had finished with it. Confused
I hadnt even started with it.

ALongHardWinter · 14/01/2020 19:39

Nothing wrong with 4 day old cooked pasta,as long as it's been stored correctly. BTW ,your DH sounds like a total pratt!

MyuMe · 14/01/2020 19:41

To each their own but 4 day old reheated pasta sounds grim.

MyuMe · 14/01/2020 19:41

I'd make him cook more.

PlanDeRaccordement · 14/01/2020 19:48

But if he tasted it after it had sat out all day and it tasted bad, he’s probably done you a favour food poisoning wise.
The guidelines are that cooked pasta can be left out for only 2 hrs without risking food poisoning and should be binned if left out longer.

“How long can cooked pasta be left at room temperature? Bacteria grow rapidly at temperatures between 40 °F and 140 °F; cooked pasta should be discarded if left out for more than 2 hours at room temperature.”

He sounds like a (not quite with it person) there are a lot of men about like this !

Wingedharpy · 14/01/2020 19:58

I saw somewhere, that reheated pasta was actually better for you than freshly cooked.
Something to do with the changes in the carbohydrate content IIRC.
2 hours at room temperature is open to wide variation.
My kitchen is probably as cold, if not colder, than my fridge.😁

I just read last night that pasta that has been heated, then cooled and then reheated has fewer calories than pasta that has just been cooked fresh. Another reason to eat pasta as leftovers (as long as kept refrigerated. Never keep pasta on the counter for longer than a day or two).

Highonpotandused · 14/01/2020 20:01

@Wingedharpy cross post!

“A note on preparation

Recent research found that the process of cooking pasta and then cooling it down changes its structure, turning it into something called 'resistant starch'. This means that it's more resistant to the enzymes in our gut which break down carbohydrates and release glucose – this normally causes a rapid increase in blood sugar.
According to scientist Dr Denise Robertson, from the University of Surrey, cooked-then-cooled pasta acts more like fibre in your body. This creates a smaller glucose spike (resulting in better blood sugar control), helps to feed the good bacteria in your gut and also means that you absorb fewer calories from the same quantity of pasta.
Even more surprising, when the leftover pasta in the study was reheated, it became even more of a resistant starch, reducing the rise in blood glucose by a huge 50%.”

My kitchen is bloody cold at this time of year... I leave meat out overnight, & it's barely above the temperature of the fridge in the morning. Admittedly we don't have the heating on overnight, & the kitchen radiator has never been switched on in over a decade, but still.

I've seen lots of threads where the husband/partner eats all the 'treat' foods intended for the family, and those who police the fridge, throwing out foods he doesn't like but his wife/partner does.

Mumtown · 14/01/2020 20:14

Was he at home all day though? My husband often does this. He cooks food and then just leaves it for hours/overnight taking up kitchen space and being disgusting. If he’s at home I’ll obviously check with him but if he’s left the house I bin whatever it is.

ChangeInTime · 14/01/2020 20:14

Exactly. It's so common, and I've encountered it several times IRL too. Yet it's treated by many as not being a real issue, but it is, Repeat incidents would be a big red flag for me,

bobstersmum · 14/01/2020 20:18

I make tuna pasta salad in a big pan and it sits in the fridge in a tupperware till its gone, it tastes better each day, not dead yet.

bobstersmum · 14/01/2020 20:22

So, pasta can't be at room temp for more than two hours. How many people send their kids with pasta in their lunchbox? Loads. Where on average it will be at room temp for at least 4 hours before being eaten. Never had a problem or heard of one!

Butterymuffin · 14/01/2020 20:24

How are cooking and shopping duties normally shared out in your house, OP?

LakieLady · 14/01/2020 20:26

@NearlyGranny, they do it because they think they know best!

Which is their biggest misconception. Grin

Weekday28 · 14/01/2020 20:30

I would be fuming.

We still occasionally bring up one time my husband threw away a large frozen Yorkshire pudding I was saving as he didn't think that we would use it as 2 of us live in the house, like we have to buy everything in 2's. This was about 10 years ago. He hasn't done it since.

You'll joke about it in a few years but it's still bloody annoying

SanFranBear · 14/01/2020 20:32

I will never EVER forget (or forgive) the party guest who threw away about three, large pizzas which were leftover from midnight feast before I could get my hands on it for breakfast. Who the FUCK throws away cold pizza... it was years ago now but really impacts me to this day Angry

Lillyhatesjaz · 14/01/2020 20:33

It's rice you have to be really careful with as it can contain a bacteria that makes toxins in needs to be cooled quickly and put in the freezer

Lllot5 · 14/01/2020 20:34

@TripleSeptic
Fuck me I was a bit meh about the pasta but I’d killed him for that.

midnightmisssuki · 14/01/2020 20:36

Your husband is a fucking stupid idiot. Who the hell throws a whole pan of pasta away - without even checking?!
